No way this is anything above a 2 star hotel!

Check in was laborious and slow. Non-smoking rooms were in short supply but based on a room that smelled more like a morgue than a hotel room, I think the smoking room would have been better. Felt like I had to wear my shoes in the room as the carpet and the walls looked like they were a century old and had never been cleaned.

I checked out after one night and moved to a different hotel - even though I had a four night reservation.

I love Memphis and from any other hotel, the city is spectular. These guys give the Hilton Hotel brand a bad name. Never again!!

Historical Traveller Reviews of Doubletree Hotel Downtown Memphis

good hotel, good location

from georgygirl1
I stayed 4 nights at the Doubletree downtown in Memphis with my husband and 12 yr old son. We were in town to do the 'Elvis' thing as my son is a big fan.
The hotel lobby is large and welcoming, not as plush as some, but lots of leather sofas, tables, lamps and plants. Reception staff were friendly and gave us warm chocolate cookies as a welcome - delicious! Our room was on the third floor, and was huge. It had the usual 2 queen-size beds, which were very comfortable. The tv was inside a dresser unit which took up a lot of space, but the room was so big it didn't matter. The bathroom was also very large, with a walk in shower at least 4 ft square, and a 2nd shower over the bath. The washbasin was set into a granite top, lots of space, and a large mirror with lights above. It was all very clean, plenty of nice white towels and bathmats, and Nivea toiletries. The hairdryer was a good model, which makes a nice change. The only bad thing was the room had quite a small window so was not very bright, but the weather was overcast and rainy some of the time, so that didn't help.
The hotel restaurant is a TGIFriday, we ate breakfast there and it was fine, good service, they remembered what we like to drink. The carpet in the hotel hallway was a little worn, but decor generally was fine, some pillars in the lobby were painted while we were there.
Right next door to the Peabody and close to Beale St.
We were all happy with the hotel, it was clean and comfortable at a reasonable price.

Dirty, dirty, dirty

Read posts below and thought how bad can it be - it is a Hilton property...Walking down the stained and filthy carpet in the hallway to my room, I knew I had made the wrong choice in hotels.

Once inside, the room itself was not that bad (or so I thought) and the bed was great but there was no way I would have been barefoot on the carpet in room - was bad as the hallway.

Checked in late the night before so did not notice til the next AM that the In-room coffee maker had old used coffee packs still inside from pervious guests and that the bathroom wall was covered in brown and black mold as well as black hair all over the wall and drain.
Told the front desk and was asked what they could do since I was checking out.

Ended up running out of the hotel to the airport! Memphis has way to many htoels in this price range (rather high for the area) to ever stay here again!

Ok, but not great!

from AZMAD
This hotel is in a good downtown location. The lobby looks great and the sports bar is a good diversion to start the evening. Other quality restaurants are nearby. It is a short walk to Beale Street and the attractions in that district.

I was attending a small business meeting with the normal amenities of such events. Overall the meeting went well and was served as would be expected, including quality meals (for hotel meals).

My problems are with the worn carpets and paint in the hallways leading to the sleeping rooms. They are not appealing. I would say that the sleeping rooms were comfortable, if not elaborate. As a business traveler, this is about all I expect. Beds were good and I slept well.

Once you get past the issue of the tired looking hallways, this is an acceptable hotel. I have stayed here several times.

Memphis is an interesting city. The downtown is not very active in the evenings, except for Beale Street and the sports venues.

Do Not Stay In This Roach Infested Hotel

from TonifromOhio
My family and I checked in on March 21, 2008. We were very excited to come to Memphis for the first time. We booked this hotel thru Priceline. To our dissapointment, the room we checked into was filthy!! There were stains on the floor and the bathtub was dirty with hair balls in the drain. We requested another room to only receive a filthier room. We attempted to get a refund thru Priceline however, they let us down, they would not refund at all. The hotel management wanted to accomodate us so they moved us to a "nicer" side of the hotel. Our third room had an ongoing ring or hum all night long. My family and i could not sleep at all. We then requested another room because we could sleep, our room was still filthy and that ring drove us crazy. We finally checked into a 4th room to only have giant cock roaches. We were so dissapointed with Doubletree and Priceline. We spent over 500 dollars for 5 days of Hell and filth. We will never use Doubletree or Priceline again. We would not recommend this hotel for anyone. This hotel needs a total renovation. This is actually a 1 star hotel that charges 3 to 4 star rates. DON''T stay here ever. You will be seriously dissapointed. If you book your rooms thru Preiceline, remember that all hotel reservations are non refundable, so you are stuck with what you get.

Graceland Stop Over

from Themate
We stayed here one night Feb 28th after our 3 days in Nashville. We were here primarily to visit Graceland. Our first concern about this hotel is the very small forecourt area for valet parking. Admitedly we did arrive at 3pm during main check in, but this area is way too small and cars were waiting out in the busy street to check in.
The room was clean and reasonable size, although the shower and toilet are very close together making getting out of the shower very difficult if you were not paying attention. Bed was excellent the best part about the room. Staff were nowhere as friendly and helpful as our previous stop at the Doubletree Nashville. Breakfast was an easy walk across the street at the Denny's.
Many good Blues bars to try on Beale street, we ate at BB King's Blues Club, and listened to some great music there. The ribs were amazing, try them.
All in all this hotel rates as average compared to many stays I have made around the world. I would recommend it but there are probably better options in the area.

OK Rooms---Terrible Security

from cgtambo
My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a weekend business session he had to attend in Memphis. I will start off by saying this is the second time we have stayed here, and the rooms are a little small but nicely appointed and it was nice having the TJI Friday's in the lobby when we wanted food or cocktails. It is right across from the Peabody, and we spent time in their beautiful lounge at night with some co-workers, and only a couple of blocks from Beale Street. So, overall, a nice place to stay downtown. I am sorry to say, however, that we had a bad experience while staying there this time. When you check in, you almost have to valet park your car for a fee of $20/day. The valets take your car to a "secure" parking lot about a half block down from the hotel. This parking lot is surrounded by a six foot chain link fence with three strands of barb wire on top and is only accessed through a gate with a key code entrance. Well, while we were packing up to leave on the morning of our departure, we got a phone call saying there was an incident with our vehicle. The back window of my Chevy Tahoe had been busted out, the door all bent and stratched up, my car completley ravaged through and many things stolen. The manager of the hotel said that there was nothing he could do and offered to comp our breakfasts. The last thing I wanted was a free breakfast, I was sick to my stomach. So, off we went for our four hour drive home, car full of broken glass and a window covered in a garbage bag. All we got was a sorry, even after paying the fee to park in the hotel's secure parking. Oh, and the breakfast....

Not a bad place for a conference

from iki4
I stayed at this hotel for a conference. The rooms were probably what they only would give to conference attendees because of the discount rate. But I would not stay here again.

Room service was inconsistent, leaving and cleaning items mearly on what seemed like a whim. Holes in the wall from old fixtures. Stains in the carpet and on the walls. Some dirt and hair on the floor in the bathroom that stayed there the entire 3 night stay of the conference.

All in all, not impressed, not what I would expect from a double tree.

The only plus was the front desk staff, and location was great.

There was also no water in the pool, This should be mentioned ahead of time. Its outside, so I guess it must only be a summer thing.

Great Location, Hotel Needs Some Tweaking

from CCRR
We stayed at the Doubletree for four nights over the Christmas holiday. The front desk staff were excellent, very professional and pleasant. Our first room was a corner room in the older portion of the hotel. It was very spacious and nice, except the heat was not operating. We called down to the front desk and a repair person was sent immediately, but he was unable to fix the problem. We were moved to the room next door, which was very convenient to move to, except the room was much smaller and there was an odd sound of water dripping constantly that we were never able to figure out what it was. Also, the heat in this room did work but it was extremely loud. It actually startled me when it shut itself off with a loud thumping sound at one point when I was in the bathroom.

Of the four-night stay, we received housekeeping services two nights. The second time, we walked into the room, noticed that a few things had been moved, remote control removed off of the bed, pillows thrown to the middle of the bed, some towels removed from the bathroom, (we assume by housekeeping staff) but the room wasn't cleaned. We called the front desk and informed them and they sent up clean towels, but were unable to explain what had happened.

We had breakfast included in our rate, which was provided by the TGI-Friday restaurant within the hotel. We could choose from all but one menu choice. The breakfast was average. My english muffin was burned one morning and the hash browns in particular were of the same caliber as you would receive from McDonald's, which was disappointing. How hard is it to cut up a few fresh potatoes and cook them?

All in all, the location was great and the front desk staff were some of the nicest and courteous we've ever experienced. I would stay at this hotel again, but would probably skip the breakfast and would request a more recently renovated room.

Excellent Stay

from PatriciaF
Contrary to some of the prior reviews, we had an excellent stay at the Doubletree. Only problem was that room wasn't read when we check in at 250 PM. Everything else was great.

Large room, very clean, good internet access.

Everything we saw, our room and the public areas, appeared to be recently updated. The bed was very comfortable.

Beale St two blocks away. Trolley two blocks away. Peabody hotel across the street. Went to see the "duck walk" at 5 PM. Got there at 425 PM, and could barely find a place to sit. At 430, every one was lined up--so as I wasn't going to stand 30 minutes to see the ducks, only saw them swimming in the fountain. My friend who lives in Memphis knew the pianist. He said it is that busy EVERY evening. Second only to Graceland in tourist visits. Wasn't that way the last time I was there in 1986!

Memphis Doubletree disappoints

from hieCville
Unique property, good rooms, a little too trendy vs. function. Clean rooms, usual great Doubletree Beds.

Reservations mismanaged (too be fair, at National level). However, National could not fix, and I needed to call all Doubletrees in my itinerary directly.
Lost laundry. Dropped of at 7 AM - promised at 5, 6, and 7 - now laundry closed. I leave at 7 AM tomorrow.
Fridays is the in house restaurant - tired and smelly - especially at breakfast.
Care Line phone (which I sadly needed to use) is programmed to a voice mail system (at least in my room) rather than a live person.
In house WiFi HUGELY slow. This is not an expensive upgrade, and I waste my time here complaining because I can't reach my server.
Vending machines - out of water on floors 10, 9, 8, 7....saw a trend, so I quit.
Fitness room - 1 tread, 1 cross, 1 bike... a weight bench, but no weights. Dark.
Anyway, Room was comfortable, and I am not traveling for pleasure, but certain things should work better for a biz traveler - the internet connection is inexplicable. Food wise, the fabulous Rendez-vous is right across the street. I prefer Club Floors for breakfast, which this property does not have. Did not see pool.
