Top Local Tips for Gatlinburg
Cereal box tourism Sad to say that Gatlinburg succumbs to an overkill of cheap tee shirts, ole time photo shops, and repetitive cereal box tourist trinkets....tried real hard to find some shops doing more than this and certainly someone will take exception to this...perhaps a business owner...living handsomely or not off this type of business....and some who say I did not look hard enough. Hope Gatlinburg rises above the plethora of miniature golf, tee shirts, ole time photos, cheap knives and swords, and kiddy rides...but hey it loads the parkway everyday....and brings in the income....if you can not see past the predictable mundane then this is your place....redeeming factors....the mountains....the trees....the exceptional dining experience, and the ideal lodge, cabin, chalet,or hotel if you research them.
Easy trail to national park visitor center Walk down River Road past the Riverhouse at the Park and take the easy trail to the Sugarlands Visitor Center to check out everything there. Easy, great hike.
Cades Cove Cades Cove is a beautiful area to visit for those who appreciate nature and are willing to take the time to appreciate it. Traffic travels one way through the loop. It moves slowly and will come to a stand still if bears or deer are spotted. There are no places to eat in Cades Cove, so pack a picnic because you will spend more time here than you anticipate. Restrooms are found about halfway through at the Visitor's Center. While here, visit the mill. Go inside to watch how the mill works. Children will enjoy this trip more if they are on bicycles or if you take time out to walk some of the trails. If they don't appreciate history or scenery, they may become bored - especially if no wildlife is seen. I've been to Cades Cove on one occasion and saw several deer and two bears. My last trip I only saw one deer and a squirrel. If you choose to ride bicycles, I suggest doing it on one of the mornings the park is closed to traffic. Make sure to walk bikes when signs direct you to.

Oh, and most importantly, they throw in free homemade donuts, I'm talking homemade right there in their kitchen, freshly made, every morning. Seriously, these things are made fresh right when you call the front desk to order them, that means they're still piping hot when they get to your room.
Now, I realize that I'm hyping this place up a lot, but seriously, it's a great little private, mom and pop owned motor lodge that's reasonably priced, close to everything, overlooking ducks swimming in the Little Pigeon river. We love the place and are planning to stay there again on a quick weekend trip in a couple of weeks.
The rooms are simple, look to have been remodeled within the last 6 years or so with a little out of style motife, but still, the rooms are very comfortable with soft beds, kitchenette area, and a weirdly placed whirlpool. The rooms and the grounds are extremely clean and the people are nice as pie and have always been ready to indulge me in conversation anytime I've stopped by the front desk.
The moral of the story; the place is great, but the hot homemade donuts delivered to your door everymorning are reason enough for us to keep going back. Ha Ha!!
Hope this review is helpful. Thanks for reading and enjoy your stay if you try them out.
