My two grown children and I go to Gatlinburg at least once or twice a year. We go to spend time together and hike. We love to stay at the Riverhouse. We have always been treated great. We love to have breakfast served to us. We sit by the fire when we eat and it is very relaxing. Since we discovered the Riverhouse we do not stay anywhere else. Can't wait to go back in May!

Horrible treatment of repeat customers- Very dissapointed

from A TripAdvisor Member
Last weekend (10/8/2005) my husband and I planned a short notice trip to Gatlinburg, as we do about once a month. We usually stay at the sister hotel, the Riverhouse Motor Logde, but it was booked, so we got a room at the Park. Once we arrived, we went in to register and meet the rudest person I have ever encountered. We were treated as if we were a bother to her day. (We had a reservation, and they had already run my credit card.) She was on her cell phone, she huffed, laid it down and started to drill us with degrading questions and a horrible scowl. We though we had done something wrong?!? We were evently so offened that we left and told them to keep the money. That is the LAST time we will spend a dime there. I have NEVER been treated as poorly ANYWHERE. I would have gotten better service staying at a truck stop!

Excellent stay as always!

We just returned from a 2 day stay Sept. 7-9 at the Riverhouse at the Park. We took a chance on this hotel 4 years ago and have stayed there every year since! Yes, it may seem outdated to some, but I love the light oak wood paneling, the huge rooms, lighted pictures on the walls, plush carpeting, parkside location, and the stone fireplace. It's kitschy cozy! The same smiling man is at the front desk, the same great clean room, the same yummy homemade donuts DELIVERED to your room with fresh squeezed orange juice and hot coffee almost before you can hang up the phone from ordering and walk to the door! It's quiet, away from the main drag and some covered parking is available on the lot. The rate was 71.00+tax for a King room off river, (river rooms with balcony over river are $10.00 more) clock/radio, TV and phone. Every room has a private balcony and gas fireplace which they turn on the day after labor day. Rooms are divided into: an entrance/dressing area with open closet and shelf, sink, countertop w/drawers, hairdryer and microwave/fridge....then a seperate room beyond with lg. walk in shower (great water pressure!), sink, counter and drawers....and another room at the rear with large whirlpool tub and commode (there is also a phone on the wall in the bathroom by the commode, I have no idea why, LOL, but it does work!). The backside of your guest room is the bed area with 2 overstuffed chairs, end table with lamp, a dining table with 2 chairs, a stacked brick fireplace in the corner with a TV on a shelf mounted to the ceiling beside it. The opposite corner has a solid door that leads to a nice size balcony with 2 lounge chairs and small table. There is an outside pool and a hot tub in a gazebo. A laundry facility is available to guests. Staff does an excellent job of cleaning and providing fresh towels and linens daily. This is a family owned business, its not listed in AAA, they don't give discounts and they don't have a toll free number for reservations. They usually require a deposit of 1 night+tax when making reservations, they mail you a bill for that and when they receive your check they send you a receipt with confirmation of your reservation, balance due when you check in. If they would just take credit cards over the phone and get a toll free number it would be perfect. But its close enough to keep us coming back anyway!

Exactly what we were hoping for!!

We stayed at the Riverhouse at the Park from July 29-31, 2005 and absolutely loved it. Having traveled to many different places in the world I can say that this hotel might be a bit dated, but the room we stayed in was spectacularly clean, quiet and had the most beautiful view of the river and waterfall. We would sit on the balcony at night and listen to the sounds of the water and drink our nicely chilled wine (courtesy of the in-room refridgerator that saved us $$ as we brought our own breakfast cereal, milk, lunchmeat, bread, etc). The pool is small but was perfect for our 11 year-old daughter with whom I also enjoyed the hot tub located in the same area. We were greeted with extreme kindness and professionalism and when we checked out we were offered the Sunday paper and another cup of coffee for the road! Not only would I recommend this hotel but we have already made reservations to go back this fall to watch the changing colors of the leaves....and we live in Knoxville and don't even have to stay at a hotel!!

Loved IT!

We just returned from Gatlinburg and stayed at Riverhouse at the Park. They have extra large rooms that are very clean. The staff was friendly and the homemade donuts were a great treat every day. My kids loved the heated pool and had a great time. I would stay here again without a doubt!

Clean place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
I too read the reviews on travel advisor, and made reservations at Riverhouse at the Park July 2005. The rooms are larger than the average hotel room, with a sleeping area, with two soft chairs and a table with two chairs where you can eat, play cards, etc. The room also has a fireplace which is nice if you go in the fall and winter when you could use it.

The motel is definitely dated. It has the 70 and 80's motif, with paneling, and in our room we had vinyl headboards, and not so attractive comforters (we brought our quilts, so no biggie). There's a big whirlpool bath with a shower in the bathroom, and a separate dressing area as well as a refrigerator and microwave, closet space, drawers in the dressing area, and an ironing board/iron. The balcony is awesome if you get a river view.. very peaceful and roomy out there, I loved the balcony. It also has a table with four chairs. The room was very very clean, I felt comfortable there. Even walking barefoot at times. It was a nice spacious room, but kind of dark.. still nice, kind of a rustic feel to it.

I loved the continental breakfast delivered to the room, but I'm not a heavy breakfast eater. You can choose 2 of the following beverages: Coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, hot tea, hot cocoa. And one of either two homemade doughnuts, toast and jelly and toast and butter ( I think). The doughnuts are good. The pool needs some work and the jacuzzi needs some work and to be painted, wish the pool had been a little more appealing. There's a laundry area also.

It was overall a good place to stay. Really roomy.

Nice and Quaint, but the honest truth is...

Here is my honest opinion. Take my opinion seriously because I am not one to complain.
The Pros:
Nice place, very clean. Nice jacuzzi, romantic type setting. Very nice tub and shower! You will feel very clean getting out of the shower if you have the room I stayed in, the pressure from the shower was great! The tub is big also! Nice fireplace as well.
The Cons:
The bed was lumpy. For the people who are reading this review and has a pillow top mattress...do you know how the pillow top beds are kinda form fitting to your body and you have to rotate the bed? Well, this bed is lumpy and it is not a pillow top. Lets say it is in desparate need for new matresses. If you have back problems, etc..you might want to check the mattress before you check in at this hotel.
The location. This hotel is located right when you come out of the Smoky Mountains. Walking is better to get around Gatlinburg, well, you are several blocks away from shops or the ski lift if you stay at the hotel. If you DO NOT LIKE WALKING far, or if you have pain walking long distances, do not stay here. For those who don't care about walking long blocks, than this is the place for you.
Also, this is not the hotels fault....but our room was where the traffic light is, and you can hear EVERY tractor trailer that stop and go at night time. So, you might want to request a river view room if you are awakened by noise.

Overall, the place was romantic, but the bed kinda ruined the sleep. I slept very little my stay there because of the noise from the trucks and the bed. My husband slept fine, it just depends how you sleep I guess. I have included some pictures, take a look at them. Oh yeah, plan on getting breakfast somewhere else because all they have are donuts for their continental breakfast.

Riverhouse dated but clean

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I chose the Riverhouse at the Park based on the excellent reviews here, and while it was a nice place, I wanted to post our review and expectations.

It's one of, if not the closest hotel to the Gatlinburg side of the GSMNP, which appealed to us, as we were more interested in the park than in the Gatlinburg shopping.

Our room was very large and clean. Unfortunately, it was the corner room closest to the street so all the while we heard trucks booming as they went over the bridge, or motorcycles ripping around. Our 6 month old didn't wake up from any of this, but we were certainly worried about it. If we were staying longer than 3 nights we would have requested a room change. Live and learn I suppose.

The room itself (and maybe this is the norm in Gatlinburg) was VERY 1980.

Floor to ceiling wood paneling, drab formica nightstands, and our favorite - the turquoise vinyl padded bed headboard - complete with oversized buttons. The fireplace looked appealing, but it being summer, was switched off.

There were paintings and maps on the walls, with musuem lights over them, a table lamp, a flourescent light over the bed (sheesh!), and a couple of wall lamps. All lights were operable by a bank of switches near the bed, where they were labelled with one of those old Dymo adhesive backed impression tapes.

The staff were pleasant, the breakfast indeed free, and delivered quickly. You have your choice of White toast with jam, wheat toast with butter, or 2 doughnuts. You have a drink choice of 2 of the following: Tea, Coffee, fresh squeezed OJ, or hot chocolate.

The fresh squeezed OJ is indeed fresh squeezed and is quite good. Downside is that each person's serving is about 6 ounces. The glazed doughnuts are also good too... but we were pretty tired of them after the 3rd day.

The bathroom was again fairly clean and obviously older. What appeared to be a space heater was built into the wall in the bathroom. The tub still had cleaner residue in it which became apparent after we filled the tub to give our son a bath. We had to drain the tub and wash it down, before refilling it.

The river balcony was nice, though the river bank was cluttered with trash and refuse from the aforementioned street.

If it sounds like I'm complaining a lot about the hotel, I kind of am. It was a decent place to stay, but there were a lot of little things that could have been better, especially after having our hopes up after so many great reviews. It was our first trip to Gatlinburg, and while we're not opposed to staying at the hotel again, we'll probably explore some of the other options first.

Nice place to stay

There are 2 Riverhouse motels in town, owned by the same people and are very similar. We stayed at Riverhouse at the Park, which is on the outskirts of town but very close to the park. Once you get past the 70’s design and wood paneling it was a very nice place. The rooms are large, with a microwave and small refrigerator, with some adjacent counter space, good for preparing food. The rooms were clean and had comfortable beds. The in room Jacuzzi was a welcome extra after a day of hiking.
The office staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fair and the pool and hot tube area was old but adequate. Overall, a good place to stay.

Good value for Gatlinburg!

Just returned from a July 4th weekend at the Riverhouse and had a great time. Room was large and clean with a comfortable bed and plent of room to strech out and relax.Bathroom was huge with large walk in shower(with pleanty of pressure and endless supply of hot water) and a seperate jacuzzi tub and 2 seperate dressing areas with sink and mirror.Wife and I have been going to Gatlinburg for many years and we agree that Riverhouse At The Park is our favorite place to stay! We will be back!

We loved Riverhouse!

Based on the reviews we read here, we decided to stay at Riverhouse at the Park on our recent trip to Gatlinburg. Are we glad we did! Everything was just as described by Trip Advisor members - our room was extremely clean and comfortable, the breakfast was very good and promptly delivered, and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. The grounds and parking area were also very clean. We've stayed at a lot of different motels in Gatlinburg over the years, with some disappointments, but we won't have to worry in the future as we'll be staying only at Riverhouse!

Top Local Tips for Gatlinburg

Hker sack lunch Just before you enter the Smokey National Park stop at Applewood Restaurant. You can get a scak lucnh for while you are hiking. IT is great. Fruit, veggies, drink ,cookie and your choice of a sandwich. (I go for the fried chicken.)

Breakfast & Dinner For breakfast, I highly recommend the Log Cabin Pancake House on Airport Road. Another breakfast place is Flapjack's on the parkway...not as good but I still would recommend. For an upscale dinner, try either The Peddler on River Road or Greenbriar Restaurant on HWY 321 north of Gatlinburg on Newman Road. My personal preference is The Peddler but both are great restaurants.

Good Eats The Pancake Pantry is the best breakfast and service in the area. The pretzels and pizza at the Smoky Mountain Brewery are incredible. The filet mignon at Greenbrier Restaurant is perfection.
