Great place!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for a convention held at the Tivoli Oct 1-3. I was able to get a good rate on the Sheraton website in May. We booked 2 traditional rooms. The first at $79 and later the other room at $65. When we checked in, we were charged $65 for each room. The rooms were large with 2 queen sized beds. The luxurious down comforters and pillowtop mattress made for an extremely comfortable sleep. Two overstuffed chairs with ottomen and a small table were at one end of the room. It was nice to drink my coffee out of ceramic mugs. The room had a large ceramic tiled bathroom with large walkin shower - it appeared to be handicapped accessible. The valet parking was $9 but most hotels in the area charged $8. There was still some construction going on near the weight room, but it didn't bother us. We only saw it Friday when we checked in.The location is convenient to downtown. The electric shuttle is only 1/2 blk away which took you from the Aquarium to the Choo Choo. Starbucks and Porters Steak House were open, but we didn't go in. We will definitely return for our convention next Oct. We ate at Sticky Fingers for some outstanding ribs. The Incline Railway and Rock City are a must if you visit Chattanooga.

Great hotel, still some work

from Stacer
We stayed one night at this Hotel in early September. We had great difficulty finding it as it had no signs at all to say which building it was so make sure you have clear directions.
It is a beautiful hotel with a very impressive lobby, comfortable beds and large rooms. Our room was spotless, in fact it seemed as though it was brand new. There is still some improvement work going on in some areas but it didn't really affect our stay. The reception service was polite but limited.
We tried breakfast in the Porter's Steakhouse but the breakfast was cold and we sent it back and left to try the diner across the road which was excellent. We should perhaps have known as we were the only two in the restaurant! There is also a Starbucks attached to the hotel.
We had very little time to explore Chattanooga but it appeared to be a really attractive place. The hotel is situated in the main street.

Basically Living in the Read House

from A TripAdvisor Member
I go to college in Chattanooga. My dorm rooms are not finished so they have us living in the Read House Hotel for a month or so. The Read House is a great hotel. It is currently under constrution so they are having a few problems with some of the values of the hotel. Other than that, it is in a grand location and it is a great place to stay for old fashion luxury.

The Read House Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Read House Aug 28th. .They have Valet Parking. And as you walk in it is so breathtaking. The Lobby is Beautiful. They were having a wedding rec. on the floor above the Lobby. We stayed on the 9th floor . At the time they were haaving AC problems in that side of the hotel but were willing to relocate us. They are still remodleing. The room was clean, King size bed with DownFeather Blankets and Pillows . From the lobby you can walk straight into Starbucks, along with a few other food places .Now i have heard the Hunted tails but nothing happen while we were there. I will stay there again if we go back to tennessee. I cant wait to see what it looks like when they are done with everything.

Toilet was broken and had no heat

from A TripAdvisor Member
While the hotel is beautiful and I can see why it is referred to as "historic" I did not appreciate having to live like it was nearly 100 years ago with no heat, a broken toilet, a broken coffee maker, and only one working lamp. I understand they are undergoing renovations, but I expect to be able to use the toilet and not freeze all night.
They did attempt to fix the heat and toilet, but neither was fixed before we left the hotel. My nine-year-old daughter barely made it to the gas station to use the bathroom after finding out they did not even have a bathroom she could use in the lobby. They should not be selling rooms in these conditions and certainly not charging us $90.00 for a night that would have been more accommodating and comfortable spent sleeping in our van (at least we would have had heat). I could have put up with all the little problems and not complained, but not being able to use the toilet was unacceptable. When I mentioned all the problems we had to the hotel employee checking us out, she gave us a 50% off coupon for the Read House in Chattanooga, TN once they are done renovating, which I think everyone got. Besides, we live by Chicago, IL! The only reason we went there was because we were driving back from Florida. I would definitely not go back there again and expected more compensation for what I thought was the worst night I ever spent in a hotel.

Undergoing renovation

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Read House is undergoing a renovation. I had hoped they would tear down the ghastly stucco "Motor Inn" (as it used to be called) adjacent to the main building, and maybe install some nice landscaping, but it appears they are going to keep the Motor Inn.Hopefully they can polish this old gem into the grand hotel it can and should be. It has a world of potential. Starbucks and a steak house are moving in, so that's good.

We will be back.

from A TripAdvisor Member
From the moment we arrived, and the helpful valet took our car, we knew we were in for a treat. Sure enough, we were right. We were greeted by friendly staff in the lobby and the civil war decor was beautiful. The room was very clean and nicely furnished. The only complaint we might have was that is was not well lit and dark in our room. The complimentary shampoo and lotion were a nice touch. Keep up the good work, Read House. We will be back.

The experience started from bad and went to worse almost immediately.
Poor service and obviously disinterested ownership. Ta ta Read House.

Do not stay at the Read

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel service was not good, The rooms were in poor condition, and there are several hotels with better location in the downtown area.
Service 1. My wife's jewelry was stolen while at breakfast 2. The car battery was dead in the car when we went to pick it up.
3. When looking for a meal one night the staff was completely unhelpful. Rooms 1. Room was generally dirty.
2. Heat did not work.
3. There was some kind of fungus growing in the vents and on the roof of the bathroom Location The hotels down by the museum or on the other end of the bus route, down by the Chattonooga Choo Choo would be more convenient locations, particularly if you have children.

Top Local Tips for Chattanooga

Beautiful downtown Chattanooga is a very nice place to visit. The people were friendly and Broad Street was loaded with resturants and interesting things. The free shuttle makes it easy to get up and down the street. Just outside of town are multiple tourist attractions. It felt very safe walking after dark. It was a fun place to visit.

Aquarium is great! Nice town for families for short vacation. Lovely scenery and great fun at Ruby Falls and Aquarium.

aquarium definitely do the aquarium and IMAX, for some families the season pass is cheaper than the regular one day pass, check it out online before you go.
