Ok value

from capsfan2002
Stayed for one night for business in August, 2006. I was first put into the annex and couldn't get wireless so went back to the front desk and they moved me to the front building since annex doesn't have wireless internet. It's located just off interstate so easy to locate. Also has a computer in the lobby which can be used by guests free of charge if you didn't bring your laptop. Restaurant was only open during breakfast and evening dinner, no lunch, so for those of us with a meeting there it was an inconvenience. Older property. Located very near shopping and restaurants. Rooms were basic and clean. It's an ok value for the money but I'll probably keeping looking for a better value as I travel in the area.

Good base for touring

from suscor
Spent 6 nights here in late August in order to explore the area. A really great location with friendly staff. On our first night I visited the front desk three times for three silly things and at no point was I made to feel a nuisance.

We paid out for a pool view room and I would recommend this if you are likely to make use of this wonderful facility. I swam every day, and it was great to get out of the pool and in a few steps be in the shower. The downside is no outside light or air, but this was not a problem, and being inside felt so much more secure than the usual motel style rooms outside.

Breakfast bar was OK, but a bit boring after 6 nights (though not enough to make us seek alternatives). We ate in the coffee shop on the first night which was OK again, but with no menus outside it was hardly encouraging clients.

Free internet access was useful for checking up on e-mails and also looking for info on local activities, and with a requested 10 minute limit if someone was waiting, not too much of a bother to get on line.

If you want a good base I'd recommend this hotel, the road access was really good. I did 700 miles in the week (and having never driven a hire car in the US before that was quite good going for me) but did not feel tired, and was just as easy as packing up and moving on every day.

Nice Place!

Got here, desk clerk was friendly, but put me in a room where I couldnt get Wireless internet, Went back to check-in Desk explained my problem to the desk clerk, they moved me to an area where I could get Wireless to work from my room.
Motel clean and nice,
Would I stay here again? YES!

Big hotel, beautiful pool

The first thing we noticed about the Quality Inn was that it is huge. It's a former Holiday Inn, and we all know what those are like. Unfortunately, our room was in one of the seperate buildings, so we had to walk quite a ways to get to the breakfast bar, front desk, and pool. The room was clean, though, and I have no complaints about it. The two outstanding features of the hotel were the pool and the breakfast buffet. The pool was very large (especially by today's hotel standards) and set right in the middle of the high-celiened, naturally decorated lobby. There was a restaurant adjacent to the lobby, but it's main purpose seemed to be the breakfast buffet. Each of us got a coupon for a free buffet. (If there was other food available, we were not made aware of it). The buffet was marvelous. The selection was large and delicious. My favorite part was the make-you-own waffles. I would recommend the Quality Inn. It is a respectable hotel in a good neighborhood.

Wonderful value

Booked a room last minute (booked at 5pm to stay same night), in August (during tourist season)--paid $51 for 3 of us (1 adult, 2 teenagers). Room was clean, but the carpet was a bit frayed at the bathroom door. Towels, sheets and blankets were rather scratchy. Gigantic indoor pool, beautiful hot tub, video game room, pool tables (for a nominal fee). Free hot breakfast buffet (eggs, waffles, biscuits and gravy, some fruit, sausage, beverages). Lovely staff. A great value!

Average Room; Nice Pool

from CocoaMom
We stayed at the Quality Inn in Rapid City from July 8 - 16, 2005. Our base rate was $109.99 per night, plus an additional $4.40 state tax; $2.20 city tax; $1.10 "B&B" tax; and $1.10 room tax. You do the math.
Anyway, what we got for this was an average room with two double beds, and a rollaway bed. The room was standard - two beds, a nightstand in the middle, a small round table, two chairs, a small dresser (two drawers), a television, and a bathroom with one sink, but a very large counter area. The closet was VERY small - it was less than 20" across; it was tight trying to hang up clothes for 5 people for a week's stay.
The basic hotel is shaped like a giant "T"; we were in an 'addendum' that was separate from the rest of the hotel. (Room #500). I would NOT recommend this particular room again - it was right next to the fire door/stairs, and all night long, we could hear the fire door slamming shut as people came in for the evening. (There is no elevator - everyone is forced to use the stairs).
The beds were a little sunk-in in the middle; my hubby and I laughed about how we would get in bed each night and then immediately 'roll' down towards the center. We weren't laughing the next morning when our backs were killing us! The rollaway bed looked VERY sunk-in; we put our 5-year old in it, as it appeared it couldn't take much more weight than that.
The pool/lobby area was very large; the kids did particularly enjoy swimming in the pool each night. Their one complaint was that there was no "happy medium" depth in the pool - it was either 2' deep or 8' deep. Either very deep or very shallow - no in-between. There were 3 pool tables, and a video game room, which the kids also enjoyed. My husband took advantage of the exercise area, which is a loft that overlooks the pool.
With the room, you receive a 'free' breakfast in the restaurant area. Upon check-in, you get either blue (for the adults) coupons or yellow (for children) coupons for each day that you're there for the breakfast. Each morning, you give the restaurant hostess your coupon, upon which she seats you at a table. What I really loved was the sign they then put on your table, "Gratuities Are Accepted"....this is a buffet breakfast, folks.... I'm not sure what the hostess is doing to earn the tip, other than showing you a table to sit at, which I could do on my own. You get your own silverware, your own napkins, your own drinks, your own food...etc, etc.
The breakfast menu never changes - there is cereal & milk, scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy, and fruit. There is also 3 waffle-makers, where you can pour your own batter and make your own waffle. This was the popular choice, and with 3 minutes for each waffle, the line would get rather long for the waffles. But, they were good! They were by far the best item offered on the buffet....
There were a few glitches while we were there...upon check-in, I wasn't given any yellow coupons for our 5-year old's breakfast, even though she was standing right next to me while checking in. So, the next morning, the hostess would not seat us until I had gone back over to the front desk and got the 'right' color of coupon for children. Wouldn't it be easier to just show a room key??!!
Our toilet backed up one day, and we had to call housekeeping. They did respond quickly with a plunger.
All-in-all, it was an average hotel with an average room...stay here if you're looking to cut costs, but it's not something to write home about.

our vacation to the black hills

The week of June 11 through June 15 we stayed in Rapid City. The Hotel Quality Inn was excellent. The rooms were great the full breakfast you got was excellent. Also the pool was excellent. It was kid freindley. My son is seven years old and he had a great time seeing Mt Rushmore and Bear country and Custer State Park. He also really had a lot of fun at the hotel and at night going into the pool. We meet some nice families there and had a lot of fun talking with them by the pool at night. We talked about what we seen and what we were going to see the next day. We also went to Deadwood. We had a great time there too. It was nice that you could take your family in while you were gambling. we left there with $600 dollars and were very happy. My family really had a lot of fun at Bear Country. We also enjoyed playing with the donkeys at Custer State Park, one of the donkeys really wanted to come home with me, he tried to get in the car with me.

All in all I would give South Dakota and excellent review. And would go back again. The only thing not real happy with was seeing crazy Horse, WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO GET IT DONE. And from South Dakato we went drove to the Mall of America. We were kind of sorry we did, I did not think much of the Mall. The only thing was my son had fun at camp Snoopy.

But all in all SOUTH DAKOTA, EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT.

OH! we also stopped at the Wall Drug. That also was a lot of fun.

Basic hotel for a basic price

from Mad-Maz999
You get what you pay for so I didn't expect a lot but the double room was clean but tired looking. Staff were helpful and when I asked for extra pillows and blankets I did get them.
The pool was ok for kids and I saw it being cleaned everyday but I am glad that our room was not located by it as the noise could be quite disturbing especially as there was a pool birthday party going on as we arrived. The free internet access was also a good bonus.
The hotel is well placed for tourist spots like Mount Rushmore, Keystone and Devils Tower. Also stores like Walmart, toys r us, Perkins restaurant and the Rushmore mall were within walking distance.
The breakfast buffet was average as there was a limited choice of food, the same for the 3 days we stayed. There was scrambled egg, hash brown, toast and a couple of choices of cereal; the best bit was the "cook it yourself" waffles. As long as there was not too much of a queue this was fun!

s what you get!

I stopped at this pet friendly motel with my dog on our way home from a long trek, our last night out. The room was very tiny (one double bed with room to walk on each side) but very clean. It is quite dated, but if you're only looking for a place to lay your head for the night, that doesn't really matter. (The smallness of the room was probably a plus in that the room felt cozier than some vast rooms full of cheap furniture I've found in other places.) It can be very convenient to have your car right outside your room, and the locks seem adequate. The free hot breakfast featured a ham, cheese and egg scramble that was very good, and not much else. It is served an area that looks like a restaurant, but isn't really one. A hostess seats you and puts down a folded plastic sign that says "Gratuities are appreciated" as she does so. I left a tip (I think it must be a hard way to make a living) but I wasn't sure what I was tipping for as there was no "service" provided. The "buffet" was very limited and was certainly self-serve. My room was less than fifty dollars, and if you need an inexpensive place to rest for the night, you could do worse. I think maybe you could do better too, and as I have to go through Rapid City next month, I am looking at other alternatives.

Interesting...great pool!!!

As you may realize, if you are driving west through South Dakota, the trip can be tedious with a van-full of kids. The Quality Inn is conveniently (and thankfully) located off of the interstate.

It appears that this used to be an old Holidome that has been updated and added onto many times, it has modern attributes while it is obvious the place is dated.

The main building does not have interior hallways. Some rooms face the "holidome/pool area" and the rest face the parking lots. Some of our party stayed in rooms facing the parking lot. The rooms seemed worn and dated.

The additional building is a newer building with nicer accomodations. The rooms here are bigger than in the main building. This building does have interior halls. It is not attached to the main building, so you need to walk through the parking lot and then some to get to the atrium and main desk. Neither of the buildings appeared to have elevators. HINT: If you have a car-load of stuff to unload, using a cart will not be a help to you if you get a room that is not on the ground floor! We figured that out after we wheeled a cart all the way to the additional building.

The pool is a huge clover shaped pool and is among the best size, maintained and clean pool for a hotel of this class as I have ever seen. The kids really enjoyed it!

Even though I am a Choice Privelege member, newspapers were not made available to the guests and the paper vending machine was empty. I was surprised how the desk staff was not aware of touristy things (like when Mt Rushmore was open).

The complimentary breakfast was very decent for this class of hotel. It was a hot buffet with all the fixings. Don't arrive a minute after the posted close time for breakfast. Since I had to walk to a gas station to get a newspaper, my kids got into breakfast before I did and I had to tip someone to allow me to join them a minute after the posted closure time.

I would recommend staying here, but with knowledge of this properties limitations. Overall, the older rooms are sub-par, the new rooms are average to nice, the pool is excellent, service is questionable. This property aspires to be a very nice upscale hotel, but parts of it make you feel that you are simply visiting a motel.

Top Local Tips for Rapid City

Dale's Restaurant in Hot Springs A good place to eat. Not fancy at all, but good homestyle cooking.

Fun and lots to do Loved the Black Hills Caverns, Reptile Gardens and Bear coutry USA overpriced but okay. Not so crazy about crazy horse. Rushmore is beautiful. Drive through the badlands park and custer park! It cost to get in about 15 $ per car but worth it. Crabfest at deadwood is great! The Broken Boot Goldmine is unique and the kids can pan for gold! Took the 1880 train, it was long but a nice ride. The cosmos is quite different, my husband thinks it is a hoax! We also drove to Yellowstone and went whitewater rafting!

cool mini golf There is a really great mini golf place just down from this hotel.
