Crown Reef has been my favorite hotel for years. It has always been my first choice whenever my family and I visit Myrtle Beach, SC. This past weekend was very disappointing. Crown Reef has been voted the Best of the Beach in the past. It has not earned that distinction since 2004 and I now understand why. The furnishings really need updating, the upkeep and general cleanliness has declined considerably. A week ago I booked my reservation on line. In error I selected smoking instead of non-smoking. Major mistake. The room was dank and musty. Further, the balcony reeked of urine. We had late check in (after 5pm) so we had quickly offloaded our luggage and went out for dinner. When we came back we sprayed Lysol and that elevated some of the smell. The smoky smell was tolerable, and we were determine to make the best of it. What was intolerable was the horribly hardly take standing on the balcony, much less sit there to relax and enjoy the ocean view or sounds of the waves below. It was around 9:45pm when I could no fowl odor became too much. I called down to the front desk and requested another room. My request was flat out denied by the front desk personnel. I was told that there were no more smoking oceanview efficiencies available. I requested any other substitution as I was certain the hotel was not nearly filled to capacity. The vacancy sign was clearly lit and there was no shortage of parking spaces available in the deck. I was told it would not be possible. I asked to speak to a manager. Another young woman who did not identify herself by name or title came onto the line and told me we could not move. They would send housekeeping to address the urine smell. Housekeeping came promptly with spray in hand. They emptied the entire bottle of solution and provided status to the front desk. They too were visibly offended by the smell. Housekeeping went above and beyond. They are to be commended. The gentleman came back and shampooed the carpet on the balcony and there was an improvement, though the smell was not eliminated. When I asked if possibly I could move the next morning, I was immediately told that I could call back after 11am to check for availability. No one bothered to check the reservation list, it was obviously up to me to call back and check the availability of "my room type". I was highly disappointed that Crown Reef did not offer me the option of another room, even if it meant an upgrade at additional cost. I would have been more than happy to pay for my own comfort and convenience. My only option was deal with the urine smell or leave I suppose. The lack of real action or effort to accommodate us communicated this clearly. I did not feel like a welcomed guest who has given the hotel repeat business. There was no follow-up from management or anyone else later that evening or the next day. Overall,this experience was highly disappointing. I will not return to stay at Crown Reef again; nor will I continue to recommend it to my family and friends. Clearly Crown Reef no longer bares the distinction....Best of the Beach.

I love the hotel so so much it is wonderful there we are comeing in eigthteen day's!!!!!!!! (yay) I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We went on a business/pleasure family trip. Rooms were nice and clean. Kiddie pools needed to be upkept better. Overall a great stay.
