Top Local Tips for Charleston
tours and buses take the land and harbor cruise.,. Well worth the price and some of the, add on 2 historic houses.. buy an all day DASH bus pass..For $4. you can hop on and off the routes that go thru the historic district and stop in front of the visitors center. Get to the restaurants about 530pm, because they fill up fast. Hit the market place for great buys.. We ate at 82 Queen , Sticky Fingers and Hymans sea food restaurant..
Hymen's Seafood Restaurant Don't waste your time! The wait to get in runs generally 30-45 minutes, which would not be a problem if the food and service was as good as it is "hyped up" to be....don't get me wrong, the food was good, but was really not any better than almost any other seafood restaurant located around the city. The service was lacking....althought the waiter did make it to our table within 5 minutes of our seating, after our orders were taken, we essentially never saw him again. He never asked how the food was, or how everything was going. The one time we did manage to attract his attention during our meal, it was to ask where our appetizer was? His respond was, "Oh, that didn't make it out here yet?" No, bubba, it didn't!!!!
Restaurants Not everything you read in the travel brochures about restaurants in Charleston is acurate. You can dine in lesser known excellent restaurants and receive absolutely great food and service. I have been to Charleston many times and always found this to be true. Again, this trip, I tried a well-known rest aurant that came highly recommended (from what I was told and from what I have read) called The Boat House. I was not impressed with the menu, vegetable selection, presentation, or the modest portion of "fishy" grouper that the waiter assured me was wonderful for $30. I have eaten a lot of grouper and this was among the worst (verified by my adult son). Sorry to give such a negative review; but I have eaten at a lot a grood restaurants in this price range and had wonderful experiences. We spent $200 for a party of 4 and could have/should have gone elsewhere. The patrons at other tables were sharing a can of OFF because the no-see-ums were horrific. Maybe it was just a bad night.
