False advertising!

The web site made it look fabulous, and described the rooms as "furnished to the highest standards." - whose standards - Archie Bunker's? While the lobby was beautifully decorated, as soon as I stepped off the elevator I felt like I was in a tenement house - metal doors and walls painted prison gray. The room and bathroom were cramped and very worn (a chunk was missing from the toilet seat, and a loose piece of the bathroom door scraped against the floor). I asked the front desk if there were any recently renovated rooms I could move to, like the ones pictured on the website. I was told those were only on the 3rd and 4th floors which were "executive" level. When I turned the bed down later that night, the sheets were dirty there was quite a bit of hair in the bed! The walls were thin, and you had to slam the door to shut it properly so I was awakened many times by slamming doors.

wonderful, romantic night

We booked a king bed room on the concierge floor at the Biltmore for one night July 31 so that we could experience Waterfire in Providence. The other reviews had me concerned, but fortunately, I did not change my plans! The hotel was beautiful, our room was lovely. It was recently renovated and exquisitely appointed. The concierge floor also offers complimentary cocktails and appetizers in the evening and a delicious continental breakfast. The concierge was very helpful and the valet service, while an added expense, was certainly worth it. I would highly reccomend this hotel and will return for another visit.

Historic and Homey

We stayed at the Biltmore last weekend 7/24/04 and we had a great time. The location cannot be beat; it is close to everything that this wonderful city has to offer. The staff were all very curteous and extremely helpful. It is a old hotel and this makes it charming. Some people mistake old with dirty. Our room was very clean and the shower was great. I highly recommend staying there.

Keep looking!!

Not very pleased with the accomodations. After the suggestion of a relative, my girlfriend and I booked 2 nights at the Providence Biltmore. No close parking (3 blocks to the nearest garage) - Valet only. We really didn't have a problem with that, other than the room cost around $200 a night and parking was another $20 a day. After checking in, we did notice the beautiful entrance, but that's where the beauty stopped. Our room was small. A 6 ft long (or less) queen bed with ragged sheets and a blanket that looked like something from the Brady house that hadn't been washed since Alice retired 20+ years ago. Couldn't stand to be in the shower too long because of the mildew on the shower curtain. I even noticed about an inch of dust on the piano upstairs. It has the potential to be a great place to stay, but it definitely needs some major updates. I would suggest staying somewhere else and visiting the lobby.

Faded charm

My partner and I stayed at the Biltmore July 5-7. We chose the hotel for the great downtown location and price. The staff was professional and helpful at check-in. The public areas were very nice and we could tell that work had been done to update the lobby. The room was very small, but adequate. Unfortunately, the rooms are still in need of continued renovation. It just appears that the owners didn't have enough money to put into the rooms to bring them up to first class status. I say that because the hotel has the potential to be a first class property. Good hotel if you get a good rate. I'm not sure if I would stay here again though.

Horrendous

Very disappointing. This hotel could be wonderful- great history and location but management is terrible.

We arrived at 5:30 PM..no clean rooms available for hours. We couldn't get into our room until 7:30 PM.

They have NO public restroom for their clients.

Housekeeping cleaned the room and left one towel. We called twice for an extra towel..it never arrived.

The next day we came back to the hotel at 7:30 PM. They locked us out. When we got in, the room was still not cleaned.

Unacceptable. Do not stay here if anything else is available at a decent price. We are very easy going and hardly ever in the room and still ran into all of these problems.

Better than I thought

Got a great deal online, then checked out reviews here and got nervous, but thankfully, our experience was better than I had expected it to be. Upgraded to a 'junior suite' at no add'l cost, which had 2 Queen beds, and a pull-out sofa -- HUGE room. Yes, it's old -- the furniture might remind you of grandma's house -- but it was clean and the service was always fast. From housekeeping, to valet to roomservice, they were eager to please and friendly. Don't ALWAYS believe what you read, sometimes you have to see for yourself. The Biltmore still has some shine and ambience from it's glory days, if you can get a great deal, take it!

old and dirty

from A TripAdvisor Member
I don't mind an old building, but there is no escuse for the dirt that surrounded me. The room was very spacious, but smelled of must. There was a good amount of dust and dirt on about everything you could see. I even had the honor of seeing someones toe nails that had been cut and left on the carpet. Needless to say we left!

A mere shell of a great hotel - safety concerns too

from A TripAdvisor Member
After waiting in the car in line for valet parking for about 15 minutes we were not offered any sort of bell service despite having several bags and 2 small children. After check-in by the professional front desk staff we found that the in-room fridge we reserved for our child's medicine was not delivered. There is no restaurant or room service, although their web site claims a restaurant is on the way. The front desk suggested we walk the family to the nearby mall for meals.
The hallways on the guest floors are wide but tired and our junior suite was large but in serious need of renovation. Every wall had peeling wallpaper and either water stains or plaster cracks. The bathroom marble was stained and the commode seat was rotting and falling apart. The moldings and furniture were once beautiful but are now severely beat up. There is no soundproofing - we heard neighbors talking though the walls, loud guests running in the halls and street noise/music all night. Outlet covers and switchplates were loose and there were multiple extension cords running openly around the room.
However, the most horrifying thing is that my children were easily able to open the windows fully and fall the 10+ stories to the street and there were no screens or safety devices to prevent them from doing so. I would STRONGLY DISCOURAGE parents with small children from staying here.
The state this hotel is in is truly shameful. It could easily be the crown jewel of Providence hotels. However, it has been allowed to decay to an embarrassing state and, until some serious restoration work is done, my family and I will be staying elsewhere.

Questionable Management

from A TripAdvisor Member
I arrived at 1 am with a pre-paid reservation for two nights. They had no rooms available - so I joined two other people who also did not have a room that they had reserved The night manager looked like a deer in the headlight of a car - no clue as to how to respond. He tried to find a class C hotel to shuffle us off to. I have stayed here twice and both times have had avoidable serious problems.

Top Local Tips for Providence

Do Not Eat at Trinity Trinity brewhouse has decent food and beer, but the proprietor is a cheat. He runs up bills and takes advantage of customers.

RIPTA The hotel doesn't tell you that the public transportation(RIPTA) will take you from the airport to a stop right across the street from the hotes for $1.50. The information that they prove you about getting to and from the airport consists of the $11.00 airport shuttle or the $35.00 taxi.

Do Little Italy, twice Definitely try mutliple restaurants in LIttle Italy area, you might want to take a cab there as parking is bad. Great great food and wine can be found in this area
