A good stay in Providence, a drive from downtowm

It was a good Marriott for an overnight stay in Providence. Parking was free, the rooms were nice, but it was not in the heart of down-town. It's an easy drive (located right off the highway) and backroads will take you into the main Providence area in a few minutes, but it's too far for a walk for the water fires or downtown restaurants (where you haev to pay for parking).

Above average room, great price.....A Taste of Italy

I was thinking of something creative to do as a suprise for my husband's 32nd birthday. We are taking our first trip to Italy this fall, so I wanted to keep costs down for the birthday getaway. We live about an hour away from Providence. I booked this hotel through Priceline for $113.00 for a Friday night. The room was above average in size and decor...the view was great...overlooking the beautiful indoor/outdoor pool. The only negative I have to say is that some aspects of the room were "worn". The furniture and bedding looked great, but the walls, flooring and ceilings showed their age a little. Especially in the bathroom where it was most apparent. It was nothing horrific, just noticeable. My husband didn't notice a thing - he was just happy to be away for the night! So, I'd say that it was still an above average room for the price we paid, and I would definately stay here again.

After checking in on Friday afternoon, we unpacked a few things and then went to our dinner reservation at Mediterraneo in the romantic "little Italy" section of Providence known as Federal Hill. (------) This restaurant was recommended by the concierge and a few other people as being an authentic Italian restaurant. The atmosphere was simply perfect! Valet parking, sidewalk tables, EXCELLENT wait staff. They even cut and served our appetizers as they set it on the table. The food itself was good...not superb as the concierge promised. (prices were reasonable) It was advertised as a 5-star restaurant, but I would give it a 3 or 4. But, then again, I have been to MANY authentic Italian restaurants in Massachusetts and Connecticut, so I have a higher expectation than many people might. After dinner I had made a reservation for a private gondola ride through the rivers and canals on downtown Providence. All along the gondola ride there were shops, restaurants, schools, walkways and plenty of bridges! We brought a bottle of champagne, and our gondolier - Marco - even sang to us in Italian. (-----) It was a very nice evening, and it really got us excited for our trip to Italy!

Back at the hotel, we pre-ordered room service for the following morning and selected the time for delivery. The choices were plentiful and quite honestly the best room service I have ever received. I was surprised. I ordered a wild mushroom and fontina cheese omelet with hashbrowns, and my husband ordered the all-american breakfast which came with two eggs, bacon, hash browns, wheat toast, juice, and coffee. Our breakfasts were way more than we could eat - but very delicious! The nicest touch was the individual single serving-sized "mini" bottles of Heinz ketchup that came on the tray. So much better than hotels with room service that give you packets of ketchup! Overall, it was a great one-night getaway, and if you can look past the "wornness" of the walls and ceiling you will have a wonderful room for a very good price. I would recommend it.

Oh - I almost forgot! The location! It's right off of 95, and within 3-4 minutes to anywhere you would like to go in Providence. It literally took us 4 minutes from door to door to get to the restaurants on Federal Hill. It probably wouldn't be the best hotel if you didn't have a car during your stay. Hope this information was helpful!

Comfortable stay

Stayed for 4 nights and was very pleased with the hotel. there were 3 fluffy pillows on each doubble bed and 3 more in the mirrored closet. The comfortor was thick and the bed linens didn't have an overwhelming cleaning solution smell. The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff were very pleasent and brought anything I needed quickly. Room service was prompt as well. The only downsife about my stay were the directions they give you to get somewhere. There is ALOT of construction which makes it hard to get around.

Going shopping? visit Providence Place! A 4 story high class mall with an IMax theatre inside!!!

Pleasant hotel in Providence

We've stayed at the Westin Providence before, and while that hotel offers more dining opportunities (in conjunction with the adjacent mall), the Marriott has the advantage of free parking-- a huge plus in downtown Providence. While we were visiting, the hotel was full due to a large youth hockey event in town, so half of our group was placed on the concierge floor (but without access to the concierge lounge); the rooms there were virtually identical to the rooms elsewhere in the hotel. Rooms were generally comfortable and clean, average in size for a downtown hotel, although perhaps less luxurious than the Westin. Even with a large number of children and adolescents in the hotel, we had no problems with noise from the hallway. We dined once at the hotel restaurant which had adequate but expensive fare. Especially with low AAA/internet rates available, we would certainly not hesitate to stay here again.

We stayed at the the Providence Marriott recently and took advantage of the Romance Package. We were very pleased with everything from the swift check in to the bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us when we arrived. The room was very clean and nicely decorated and the bed super comfy. The bathroom was spotless with nice amenities provided. The package included the breakfast buffet in the restaurant which was delicious and the service was great. We found it convenient to the highway and also to downtown, using the map they provided us. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend to anyone travelling to Providence.

Reasonable price, free parking, good location, clean rooms

I have stayed at this Marriott many times in the last 15 years. The location, just outside the downtown area is a plus for me, as is the free parking (although the lot is sometimes crowded with people attending functions in the conference rooms). An easy walk to the new shopping mall and downtown for the average person. Close to the highway for easy access to the rest of RI (Routes 95, 195, 146) The pool is great in the summer - swim from inside to outside, with a large outside seating area. The inside pool can be a bit crowded in the winter though. The fitness room is a good size, but as this is a business hotel, it sometimes gets crowded. The restaurant can be a bit pricey, but just have the sandwiches and the breakfasts and you will be OK. The rooms I have had are always very clean and quiet. We noticed new duvet covers and bedding this time. I have reserved by best comments for the staff. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. The night manager was the best! She was very polite, and went out of her way to ensure our comfort. We had the Sunday breakfast, and the restaurant staff were great to us! We would stay here again any time. Much easier than staying in the heart of the downtown.

Quality Property Near Downtown

Rate of $189 via Marriott web site for one night, 10/22/2004. Much cheaper than the Westin, which was $299 that night without free parking.

Quality property up to Marriott standards as compared to other Marriott hotels. Nice indoor pool area and fitness room. While the room didn't have a lot of wall hangings, the bed linens were obviously new, as they had down comforters with duvets and good pillows. Clean room with a great desk for business travelers.

The hotel is located on the far north end of downtown. The downside is that it's a long walk (but short drive) to downtown attractions, however the upside is that the hotel has free parking (a big benefit since parking rates in Providence are as expensive as they are in Boston).

I would stay here again if I had a car and would recommend to others.

Top Local Tips for Providence

Nice New England City Downtown Providence is a nice place to visit. There is the River Fire, Providence Place Mall, nice stores; wonderful restaurants, RISD, lots of history.

WaterFire, Providence Place Mall and Brown U. Waterfire is a very cool, surreal, romantic event on certain Saturday evenings in summer. The Mall is nice and huge with several hotels within blocks. Since they've resurrected the river under the city, they have added nice walkways and bridges that will lead you right up to College Hill where Brown University is. It is a beautiful campus with a lovely large green and surrounding neighborhoods with old houses and cobblestones and quaint quiet streets to stroll. Check out Thayer Street for the action. Nice contrast to downtown.

Driving in Providence Get a map that indicates one way direction of roadways and watch for the few street sign, good luck!
