Top Local Tips for Newport
When driving to newport - stop for 2 GREAT meals on the way... From South stop at Mystic Pizza (easily off !95) for the nostalgia. Fun family place. From the North stop at Meeting Street Cafe in East Providence (just of 195) - BEST SANDWICHES ON EAST COAST!!
Colonial Newport Newport contains an incredible number of colonial era buildings and most are just a block or two from the busy shopping and restaurant scene on the waterfront. At the visitors' center, ask about the walking tours of colonial Newport during the summer to visit many of the outstanding places, including a huge Quaker meeting house, early houses packed tightly on streets, the oldest synagogue in the United States (Touro), and famous Trinity Church, and hear about Newport's (and Rhode Island's) early leaders. On your own, you can stroll the streets and discover some of this history on your own, thanks to occasional markers and identification signs. Wear comfortable shoes and watch your step (streets are narrow and sidewalks are uneven).
Newport off-peak Newport has made great strides toward being a year-round resort. It is beautiful in Spring and Fall, when the weather is a bit milder than the extremes of Summer and Winter, and the rates at these times should be less extreme as well. “Christmas In Newport” is a gorgeous city-wide event encompassing the whole month of December. They have organized a winter festival which usually coincides with school vacations in February. Even in the cold, it is worth a visit. In the summer, it can get quite steamy, and many of the busy waterfront restaurants lack air conditioning, but it is still full of places to go and packed with things to do. Simply walking down side streets can be a potential history lesson.
