Beautiful Place, Service Need Polish

from A TripAdvisor Member
Returned from the Chanler last week after a brief honeymoon. The property, location, and rooms are perfect. With the ocean as its backyard it would be hard to find a more romantic place in the Northeast. The rooms are also lovely and offer every amentity you could think of.

That said the service needs some polish. The entire staff was polite with the exception of the night desk clerk. My wife and I returned to the property after a long day at the beach. Admittedly we were looking a bit worn after a day in the hot sun. However the night clerk all but accused us of crashing and not being guests of the hotel. When I informed her we had been there for a few days and were indeed guests she somewhat apologized. While in the grand scheme of things this issue is insignificant however the high prices The Chanler charges should yeild a bit more professional service in my opinion.

All in all a lovely place that I would reccomend highly. Just ensure you look presentable when you enter.

Just got back

My wife and i just returned from the Inn a few hours ago. We just celebrated our 28th! I saw the place a year ago when we went with friends of ours to the Newport boat show. We were all in jeans and summer clothes and walked by the Inn on a hunch that they would let us tour the place. What a tour it was! The staff was so nice to us that I couldn't stop thinking of it all year. It was so much more than what my wife and expected. We spent so much time debating the cost that we expected them to never measure up. Boy were we mistaken. From the woman who cleaned our room, to another maid who showed us some of the other rooms during checkout the staff treated us like a king and a queen. I hope that the people in our company have so much joy in what they do as the staff from the chanler. The meal saturday night at The Spice Pear was like watching a ballet of staff that brought us our courses, prepared us for the next course, and cleaned our table, flawlessly.
I can't think of a better way of enjoying the old mansions of Newport by putting them back to what they were intended to be, grandure.

Just a nice room/restaurant

My husband and I just got back from a three night stay for our 20th anniversary. Hotel room is very beautiful. New, very nicely decorated, tv in bathroom, heated floors, fireplace, and outdoor hot tub. However, room service seemed like an inconvenience as did most requests to the hotel staff. Hotel lacks service and experience in all areas except the restaurant. Upon arrival, no greeting, valet is also bell boy, though very nice, we couldn't find him to get our car most of the time. Front desk people came across as unfriendly and also seemed difficult to find at times. The woman who showed us to our room did not tell us about all the features in the room and how to use them. We always felt like we were inconveniencing the staff. We went to the terrazza, more casual, outdoor restaurant, one afternoon for lunch, was very good, but then attempted to go for dinner one evening and it was closed unbeknownst to us. This, after receiving a card from the hotel staff explaining restaurant and room service hours--of course no mention of the closed restaurant and it was not due to weather, they are just closed on M, T, and W. Absolutely no information in the room about anything---no info about newport , things to do, places to go ,or about services available in the hotel or features in the room. No movies available in the rooms, only dvd players incorporated into the television. Couldn't get the door to lock during our stay. My husband and I are accustomed to staying in fine hotels like the ritz in boston, boston harbor hotel etc. We were incredibly disappointed at the hotels inability to make us feel special in any way. Didn't get a happy anniversary from one staff member( and we did tell them it was our anniversary).Still couldn't tell you where to get ice. Most of the staff are very young--seeming to lack the necessary experience to accomodate guests. Staff seemed to grimace when asked for anything unusual. Room service menu is very limited.

It is clear that this hotel is surviving alone on the service and wonderful food prepared at the Spiced Pear. It is the only area of the hotel that does not seem to need any changes. The food was incredible, and well worth the high price .

We will go back to the Spiced Pear restaurant, but will not go back to the Chanler as a place to stay overnight. There are many other fine hotels in Newport and even some not so fine hotels, that manage to serve us better.

My husband and I arrived after midnight on Friday. As soon as we pulled up to the entrance of the hotel we were greeted by the evening staff and wisked immediately to our room. We did not even have to do the formal check in. The room was immaculate and even had chocolates and a birthday card for my husband. The first two nights we stayed in the French Provincial room. It is a really cool bi-level room with views of the water. The bathroom is fantastic. The only problem with the room is that the air units are housed below the bedroom window and it is not too conducive to listening to the sea. The bathroom window allows a more pleasant airflow. The last two nights we stayed in one of the beachfront villas. The room was awesome and the view was even better. The lower level has a private garden courtyard with a fountain, hottub and sauna. The bedroom is on the upper floor and allows amazing views from the bed. The french doors (from the bedroom to the deck) do not have screens so you can not keep them open all night; however, you can open the large windows for sound and breeze. Again, the bathroom was perfect. MAJOR WARNING: if you stay in a beachfront villa or outer room PLEASE lock your lower courtyard door. A very drunk man walked into our private courtyard from the nearby Cliffwalk and luckily my husband was standing right there. He had to take matters into his own hands and escort the man out. The staff responded quickly after we called but it really was quite insane.

The food was excellent. Many people have stated in the reviews that it is overpriced; however, they are not so unusual for upper east coast prices. All of the entrees are designed to be shared. An entree for two may be approx. 25 to 36 dollars; but, that is not so beyond the normal per person prices for a restaurant of that caliber. The food is seasoned wonderfully. My husband ordered a steak and before tasting it he asked for steak sauce. The funny thing is that the chef got a total attitude about the request; and, after displaying several faces of discontent the chef sent the waitress back to explain that they did not have any. Two points about that -- 1) it was not needed; and, 2) as paying customers, we should have been able to eat the steak with dirt if we so pleased. Give me a break!! But really folks, the whole stay was phenominal.

Most Romantic Place to Stay in Newport

from bcoops
After reading a feature in our local "Style Magazine," rating The Chanler one of the top East Coast beach resorts, my wife and I cancelled our Greenbrier reservations and opted for three nights at the Chanler. What a beautiful place to stay. Each room has top quality reproduction furnishings from American and Continental periods. The bathrooms were unbelievable with marble floors and walls, and Kohler whirlpools and multi-head shower systems. Our Federal Room gave us great ideas for our own bedroom and bathroom redecorating. My only complaint was the noise from exhaust fans adjacent to our ocean view deck. It made sitting outside almost unbearable and turned our occasional chair in the corner into a vibrating chair. But the hotel was as romantic as it gets. The Terrazza was unbelievable, with great views of the ocean. Food was excellent. The wait staff was only average. We had to ask the waiter for water refills five times. I never saw the busboys fill a glass at any tables; they pretty much stood around expecting the waiters to do everything. But the food was delicious, with very rich seasoning. We did not eat dinner at the Spiced Pear because the menu selection was broader at the Terrazza. However, we ate breakfast there and it was delicious.
Overall, the stay was great. The staff is pretty young, most in their 20's. They missed a couple things we asked for but were very courteous and helpfull in other areas. The beauty, cleanliness anbd ambience of the hotel outweighed any problems. We stayed three nights in the middle of the week and I believe only a couple of rooms were occupied. For their sake, I hope their occupancy picks up. I'm sure the price $495-$895 scares many away. But for those that can afford it, this is the most romanitc getaway in Newport and I must agree with our local magazine: "one of the best on the east coast."

Sometimes great, sometimes awful

Boutique hotel in a prime location on the water at one end of Cliff Walk -- gorgeous rooms and great concept. But they need to get their act together. Some of the staff were fantastic -- my boyfriend and I checked-in after the kitchen had closed for the night and the valet went into town and brought burgers back for us. Others were terrible -- two forgotten wake-up calls, attitude-laden restaurant manager wouldn't let us sit in the dining area for 1/2 hour of drinks at 5pm even though there were 17 open tables, no room service menus (and two out of four items were wrong when the order showed up), forgot to clean and make-up our room one day. The amenities and service should be seamless given the high price tag and the hotel's great potential, but the inconsistencies make for a disappointing experience.

The rooms are amazing and provided the ultimate escape. The location is perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our less than 24 hours seemed like a week long escape.

Romantic birthday get-a-way.

We had a wonderful stay at the Chanler, we were in the Gothic Suite and it was AWESOME. The bed and linens were to die for and the shower with 5 heads was totally decadent. We had requested bath service after dinner and it was not done. We were credited the money and it was put in the computer for it to be complimentary on our next visit. We also had a wonderfully romantic dinner at the Spiced Pear, very expensive but worth it.

The Chanler Inn at Cliff Walk

Stayed at the Chanler on March 18th. It was beautiful and right on the water. The service was excellent. It was extremely expensive, but you know what the price is when you book it. We had a "villa" with an outside hot tub in an enclosed courtyard, heated floors in the bathroom, two flat screen TV's, double showers and a jacuzzi. We ate in their dining room, which was extremely expensive, but you have choices and can eat elsewhere. The food was very good and the atmosphere is first class. This place is first class all the way.

Over priced, over done, over it!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Lunch for 15 with reservations, took 4 hrs. and $1000 not counting alchohol, dessert or H'vds. Overpriced, too much show for lunch time.
Viewed 2 rooms and found them very ostentatious. Over done, over priced, over it!
