Historical Traveller Reviews of Mill Street Inn Hotel

t bother

from A TripAdvisor Member
I totally agree with the last reviewer. I would not recommend the Mill Street Inn. For the life of me, I cannot figure out what the other rave reviews were based on. The place was filthy and in poor repair. The much touted roof top breakfast was marginal at best. The food was set up in a dark, dingy basement where I spotted 2 very large (2 to 3 inches) centipedes crawling on the food table. If you want to enjoy your muffins on the roof, you have to get them there yourself. You have lots of stairs to contend with, and there is no elevator for those that need this type of assistance. Way over priced for the conditions, however, this is a convenient location.

I agree with the last reviewer. I would not recommend the Mill Street Inn. I am not sure what the other rave reviews were all about. The place was dirty. The carpet felt especially dirty and the walls need to be repainted badly, even the surfaces of the coffe table, etc. were not clean. The housekeeping was extremely spotty. One day, she would show up and clean and the other days she just wouldn't bother to even take the trash. The breakfast that we were looking forward to on the terrace was horrible (old, stale muffins) in a dark, dingy basement. We almost changed hotels the minute we saw the place (not like the beautiful pictures on their website), but didn't ONLY because of the location. You cannot beat the location, but other than that, I would not recommend this hotel.

Terrible Price/Value Ratio

This Inn is way too expensive for the standard it has. The bath is dirty, the furniture lousy, breakfast (and breakfast room) very basic, and the staff extremely unfriendly. I cannot recommend this Inn at all.

Still Great Value in top location

This is the second time I have stayed at Mill Street Inn in the last 7 years. I was impressed then and our most recent visit was just as satisfying. Great value for money given the rooms and the location of the Inn. The only thing that really needs to be addressed is the lack of decent internet access. Dialup is available but you are lucky to get over 26.0 kps, time to move on guys and offer high speed or WiFi. Will stay here again next time I visit Newport.

High Hopes Dashed...

Our family of 4 stayed here the last week of April. We were eager to stay here based on the wonderful reviews we read. We had a two-room suite which was very comfortable and roomy, although very dusty in the bedroom (headboard and top of radiator was covered in dust). We had problems with housekeeping that we tried our best to overlook - for instance, the first night we returned to the room, it was made up but the bathroom was not replenished with towels or toiletries. When we brought this to the attention of the front desk, they were very apologetic and gave us what we needed. The next problem, however, was on a larger scale. In adhering to the hotel's policy of conserving water, we did not request the linens be changed each night - instead we opted to have them changed every 2 days. When we returned to the room at the end of the day, after having a "service, please" sign on the door all day, we found that the room was TOTALLY not made up whatsoever. The sofa bed was pulled out and unmade, the bedroom was unmade, the bathroom was unmade, garbage was not emptied and we had been sleeping on the same linens for 3 nights. The evening front desk person was apologetic, but explained that she could not leave the front desk to assist us since she was "waiting for a check-in". Also told us that housekeeping "leaves early when hotel is not full"! Upon checkout the next morning, we explained what happened and were told to expect a call from the manager, Wendy. To this day, after placing numerous calls, 3 weeks later - STILL NO PHONE CALL from the management of the hotel. Truthfully shocked at this lack of courtesy! A phone call would've meant a lot to us in terms of common courtesy. Unfortunately this experience ruined what was to be a great time in a nice place.

Dave Ruled!!!

Four of us headed for Newport Rhode Island the last weekend in April for a girls weekend to Newport. I researched on this web site and found The Mill Street Inn to be a great choice. So I made a reservation...guess what??/ Somehow (???) things got screwed up and they lost my reservation...Long story short....The Mill Street Inn was very very accomidating and the man of the hour was Dave...He was a wonderful young man who helped make it all better. They could not have been more appologetic ( even though it was their fault). I had made a reservation on line for a townhouse and somehow the reservation was lost. I called a week before we arrived (thank goodness) and that was when the problems began. Never found the res. They were able to give us a junior sweet and at a reduced rate. First good thing...Dave was wonderful on line. It was GREAT just speaking to a real person at The Mill STreet instead of someone in some far away place trying to deal w/ a prblem. Anyway....when we arrived in Newport...again tons of appologies and the second night.....they gave us our townhouse...again great price!! Thank you Dave and (the lovely lady when we arrived too---never got her name) You guys ROCK!!!!
It poured most of the time we were there....but...guess what??? Our girls weekend was still FANTASTIC....Mill Street was lovely...Mansions incredible...Great restaurants...and a fun time had by all...

Wonderful Inn - some minor problems

from Nhtravelgal
Stayed here last weekend in April with family. Great small Inn. We had a two room suite with separate bedroom. Main room had a sleeper sofa and large dining table. Also requested roll-away bed which also fit in the main room comfortably. Nice sized bathroom. The extra space was wonderful. We didn't feel crowded. Everything was very clean. Room was quiet. Didn't hear any hallway or street noise during entire stay. There was some type of generator or heating unit below the bedroom which made a constant low humming noise. It was not noticeable at all during the day and I only noticed it at night because I am a very light sleeper. The rate included a nice continental breakfast and an afternoon tea. There was always hot coffee and hot water (for tea) available in the breakfast room. Staff very pleasant and accomodating (especially Teresa).

Location is ideal. Very close to downtown, yet on a quite side street. We walked to the shops, dinner. Rate also included dinner for two at a restaurant and 2 tickets to a mansion tour. Excellent value for a pricey destination.

Couple of problems, suggestions for management: Had trouble with the 3 keys for our room. Always took us a while to open the door. Leak from ceiling. Water came into our room during a rainstorm. Fortunately nothing got wet and they indicated it is being remedied. Would be nice to have a little refrigerator in the room. One is available near ice machine in basement. Have hot cocoa available along with hot coffee and hot tea.

Overall, we highly recommend the Mill Street Inn. The wonderful amenities of this place outweigh any minor imperfections. We will stay here again when we get to Newport.

Good loc. Nice place

from A TripAdvisor Member
Location is perfect. 5-10 minute walking distance to everything yet tucked away in an alley so you feel somewhat isolated from the tourist traffic.

We stayed at a deluxe suite which was tucked away by itself away from the main corridor of the regular suites. There was some street traffic noise which the windows didn't filter 100% but wasn't bad.

The rooms are nicely done and clean. It's not the Four Seasons. But if you're looking for friendly service, clean big rooms at a incredibly reasonable price, with prime location, this is the place.

Would love to go back to Newport -- a wonderful scenic place -- when the weather is a little warmer and there's more activity. And will definitely stay at the Mill St Inn again.

one of the worst nights ever

from A TripAdvisor Member
my daughter and her infant son and i stayed one night. therooms near us ere filled by men whoi were up all night using the worst language and constantly made noise all night. we could not sleep and called the staff on duty who was no help. said there were no other rooms for us. we could not wait for the night to be over and leave and never return andto never send anyone else there. I have a house on Lee st. and come at least once a year but would never go there again.

Wonderful place for a weekend

from PS913
We just returned from a weekend away at the Mill Street Inn. The Inn is attractive and very clean. We enjoyed the townhouse, which gave us a private sleeping area and room to gather with our friends. We parked our car and never needed it again. There is no exercise facility, but we had access to the Marriott's, a few blocks away. Best of all, the staff was friendly and cheerful. Laureen spent considerable time helping us. We're already planning to return next year.

Top Local Tips for Newport

Flo's Clam Shack Go to Flo's Clam Shack near Easton Beach for tasty fried seafood.

Scooters!!! Absolutely rent scooters and ride up the coast and head to the Mansion Row. The drive is alot of fun. The Mansions are really amazing & you can spend hours doing it without getting bored. Stopping from time to time to get off, stretch. But it's extremely fun. Scooters are the way to get around. Everyone is doing it! Ha!

Check out the Winter Festival Highly recommend Newport Winter Festival in February!
