A Fantastic Experience
from artfuldodgerThe lobby is quite prodigious, consisting of several levels with lots of seating, and it was nicely decorated for the holidays with several Christmas trees. It also has a very nice nautical theme, which instantly puts you in a good, costal New England mood.
The hotel is located perfectly; it's a short, pleasant walk along the wharf to lots of shopping, food, and a Starbucks--of particular importance to me.
The only downside is that they are one of those hotels that still insist on charging for Internet access ($9.99 plus tax); however, it worked flawlessly and was fast. Nevertheless, I would definitely stay here again.

from Dana49s Cold in New England
from A TripAdvisor MemberVery disappointed
from LouiseWith a bit of imagination and a few flower pots and seats this would have been pleasant. If they had spent a little money on the balcony and better beds, instead of the huge and I have to admit impressive foyer, it would have made for a more pleasant stay. I would not stay here again despite it's convenience to the town centre and Bannisters/Bowens Wharves.
Needs Updating!
from LisaJNBasic hotel, nothing special
from debcurrieThe pro's are the location - right next to the visitors center and walking distance to the wharf. The concierge and staff are all wonderful and really did make us feel special, we got a "happy anniversary" at every turn, and when my husband called to see if they did anything special for anniversaries such as a petal turn down (they don't) they worked with him to order flowers for the room and surprsise me, etc. The staff was top notch.
The cons were the room itself - specifically the bathroom. It desperately needed an update and felt dirty. The tub was one of those tubs they put over an exsisting tub. Water must have gotten through the seal because when you stepped in the shower it felt like you were standing on a waterbed because you could feelthe bubble between the tub and its foundation, where it was obviously filled with water. Gross. We had an "outside" room with a view of the bus station (what do you expect, it was free), so needless to say we didn't open the sheers on the curtains. We requested an upgrade but none were available.
I'd suggest booking a room with a view of the wharf (again, we had no control over this as we were using pts.) This would have completely changed the experience for us, which was a good thing for us to learn. Definitely do not book an inside room, very claustrophobic looking and everyone can see into your room if they like!
All in all we had a fabulous weekend, but that's just the type of people we are. This is just an average Marriott that is in need of a little updating. We wouldn't return to the Marriott for a romantic weekend, but it is perfectly adequate and convenient for large parties or active families.

from notnecessaryGood Stay
from GillBreakfast was excellent, the buffet had a good variety, complete with omellete bar, cooked to order.
Didn't like the interior windows looking out onto the lobby, ask for views of the marina if you can.
Handy convenience type store in the lobby.
Newport is wonderful, I'm only sorry I didn't have longer to explore. Among the must sees are the Newport Mansions. There is a very handy Tourist Information Office just next to the Marriott - I'd recommend you pop over there and get all the brochures/maps etc and suggestions for sightseeing, they were so helpful, particularly Damon.
I'd happily return to the Marriott and the location was perfect.
Typical Marriott
from A TripAdvisor MemberHad a good time-typical Marriott
from Skunk333Seriously, there was no noice from outside at all. Our entrance faced the lobby, and I noticed on only one occasion that I could hear the piano in the lobby from our room, but that was turned off by 8pm. There was a wedding in the hotel on our second night, and I heard NOTHING. We enjoyed the pool and hot tub, and saw the fitness center which is relatively new and looks OK-both are free to hotel guests. All of the staff we met were nothing but courteous and helpful. Conclusion-if you are going to newport and aren't a fan B&B's, the marriott is nice, clean, quiet, and what you would expect. I would go again. Fair warning, we went in november, when the rates are much cheaper-I don't know what the summer rates are, but I would say the probable $300-$350 during the peak season is probably too much for this hotel.
Top Local Tips for Newport
Take the Tour! Part of our getaway package included tickets to a few different entertainment options. We took the Trolley tour which was a fantastic way to see the city and learn something about Newport. Highly recommended. But be careful. There is only 1 trip a day during winter months.
Little Jazz, Lots of Rock Newport used to be a haven for jazz, but most of the jazz clubs have been replaced by clubs catering to college crowds and twenty-somethings, offering primarily rock and DJ-hosted music. Expect very LOUD crowds, and a few too many kids (using fake IDs) who have had too much to drink. Some good live rock band performances are marred by obnoxious beer-heads.
Great food, relaxation The Black Pearl on Bowen's Wharf has excellent food. We heard after eating there that we should have tried their chowder. There is a coffee shop at the very tip of the wharf, near the private yacht owners' entry to the docks, serving very tasty coffee and pastries, and other items. In front of the coffee shop, right on the end of the wharf, there are comfy chairs where you can sit and watch the boats and yacht owners, or more likely, their crew. Try the espresso with a bit of chocolate. Very nice. Further down the road from Bowen's Wharf is The Mooring. Excellent food. We had a full meal of several appetizers. The portions are enormous for the price. Very good value. Friendly service, not stuffy, though it is a nice restaurant. Dressy casual. Lucia's Italian is very good too. We picked up take out one night as we were tired and didn't want to eat out. Fresh tasting pasta; amazing broccoli dish with garlic. If you go on the Cliff Walk, be sure to bring water and maybe snacks.
