I would never go back to the Ivy Lodge!

I booked the The Turret Room a few months in advance and received a phone call two hours before I was supposed to arrive stating they double booked the room and I had to be bumped to a lower room. No compensation was offered except for chocolate covered strawberries. The room I was bumped to also did not have a refrigerator, which I needed to store my insulin. It was still muggy when I was there, and the air conditioner in the room stopped working half way through my stay. You are not informed until you arrive that you cannot have red wine in the rooms, and when I had issues with low blood sugar and my boyfriend went to get me something for breakfast, he was told he "absolutely could not bring any type of food in the room except for maybe dry toast". The owners are VERY rude. There is too much competition in Newport to spend $400 a night and have to be treated like that. I would never stay there again.

My husband and I planned a last minute trip to Newport and it was our first time there. We stayed at the Ivy Lodge and it was a wonderful experience!!! The owners and staff were very courteous and gave us great recommendations as first timers. We stayed in the Trunk Room which was spacious, with a fireplace although we did not use it. It was unseasonable warm that weekend. We spent a wonderful afternoon on the porch sipping wine and enjoying the peacefulness of the neighborhood. The inn was so quiet you felt like the only people there.
Breakfast was delicious and there were snacks 24 hours if you get the munchies. We loved it there and recommend it to anyone.

Great stay at the Ivy Lodge

My wife and I go to Newport RI as much as posible. It is our Honeymoon/Anniversery location of choice. The staff at the Ivy lodge were great and very accomidating from the time I first called to ask questions and make reservations. They even offered a romance package that was absolutly great, appreciated, and the price was right. The owner even included a bottle of their own personal wine stock. Breakfast was fantastic, including the presitation. The owners were very informative of the local area, with restaurants, points of interest, and things to do. They were fun and interesting to talk to. The location was perfect from the Cliff walk to the Warf and water front shopping and site seeing or just walking around the neighbor hood. We stayed in two different rooms that we enjoyed very much. The Trunk room was great but they both had A/C, Gas Fire places, personal baths etc. The house is big with lots of wood and wonderful gardening. I could go on with more but I better stop and say I will go back again without hesitation.

Very Good Stay

We stayed at the Ivy Lodge the weekend before Labor Day and had an excellent time. The Van Allen room was comfortable and nicely decorated. The building is a well-kept Victorian mansion.

The hosts were very welcoming and pleasent throughout our brief stay. Darlene gave us an extensive overview of where to go and what to see.

The main course at breakfast was a choice between a sweet or savory dish, both of which were absolutely delicious. In addition, there's cereal and pastries ready to go.

The lodge is very well located for the mansion district. The cliff walk is less than 10 minutes walk. The mansions are even closer (3-4 blocks to The Elms). It's only 5 - 7 minutes to drive to the Thames St. shopping district (but take the extra time to drive along Ocean Dr. instead).

I just read the most recent review of the Ivy Lodge and had to laugh. My husband and I were in Newport for the Jazz Festival in Aug. 2003 and stayed at the Ivy Lodge. The little window unit A/C in our room kept freezing up and never cooled the room. It was miserably hot and impossible to sleep. When we complained we were told the same thing the previous writer was told two years later....it the humidity!! Ha! We live in Central Florida, we are used to humidity. This was just a lack of maintenance, upkeep, and no concern for guests comfort. My handy husband worked on their little A/C and was able to defrost it and got it working a little, but it soon froze up again and was no better. After the third night they did move us to another room where the A/C was working, but offered no compensation whatsoever for our discomfort.
Also, be informed that the common areas of the lodge are not air conditioned. The dining room where breakfast is served was so infernally hot it made me feel ill and I could not eat most mornings. The whirlpool tub did not work (it was too hot in there anyway), but it was one of the main reasons we booked that room. And lastly, I had asked for a chilled bottle of champagne be in our room at check-in. We arrived right on schedule and the champagne sat in a bucket of tepid water in our room. Overall, not a great place to stay, but Newport itself is wonderful and we went back in 2004 and are returning for the Jazz Festival in August of this year. Of course, both times in a different inn.

DON'T trust your room assignment when booking or expect the special rate as advertised. These people are all about making money and NOT about being good hosts. The Lodge is lovely but the service terrible. Our bed was never fully made and toiletries never replenished. For $360 a night I expect shampoo. The air conditioners were terrible and the owner gave the excuse of "Newport humidity". I live in an old house by the sound I've never had trouble with my air conditioners! The owners were aloof and annoyed by any small request--like that the milk for coffee was sour! We were very uncomfortable there and would never go again

The owner is very rude and does not honor special rates that are advertised on their own website as well as other sites that promote them.
Even after agreeing to pay higher rate she continued being rude and very unpleasant.

We stayed at the Ivy Lodge for Valentine's Day weekend. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Location was okay; we ended up driving to the mansions and the waterfront, but in warmer weather it would have been a pleasant walk.

We too had a problem with our reservation. I reserved the Victoria Room, but when I called before arriving, I was told we would be staying in the Turret Room. I was not happy! I had specifically reserved the Victoria, and I even had the confirmation e-mail with me. The room change was an upgrade, though, with no extra charge.

The Turret Room was beyond expectation. In the cold weather it was great to come back to a romantic suite with working gas fireplace and 2-person Jacuzzi. The bed was king sized and very comfortable -- I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning!

Breakfasts were incredible, both in presentation and in quality. There were fresh pastries and breads, and yogurt with granola and fresh fruit, and the entrees were delicious as well.

We couldn’t have chosen a better place to celebrate the holiday. Don't hesitate to stay here -- you won't regret it!

P.S. While in Newport, eat at the Red Parrot and Cafe Zelda. And don't miss out on the Cliff Walk!

Romantic Inn, great service

A must see, Ivy is a great place to relax and enjoy Newport in style. Great hospitality and service plus the breakfast and afternoon snacks were delicious. Stay in the Turret Suite, a large room with 2 person whirpool and walk to the mansions or cliff walk. We're going back next year.

Lovely House, less than lovely hosts

This is a lovely house in all respects, but the host/owner is less amiable. There was a major error in our booking and we were in a small room which I specifically asked not to have. I requested a specific room but was told it was allotted to someone else. Somehoe, the owner made it all my fault including the fact that they had sent an e-mail confirmation to another person...which I had trouble understanding why that was my fault. They did manage to 'find' another room for us in the house that was acceptable and took $10 off the rate. However, his attitude somewhat spoiled what could have been a wonderful stay Breakfasts were very good and presentation and service of them was excllent.

Top Local Tips for Newport

Jane Pickens Theatre This is a real old fashioned movie house complete with balcony. The management will give you a blanket if you are chilly!

Dining at Castle Hills The dining experience at Castle Hills was the best we have ever had. It also wins the prize for most expensive meal for two, but it was worth every dollar. The chocolate suffle desert (you order it when you order your entree so they can make it fresh) was "to die for".

Go see Belcourt Castle and Rough Point! Two mansions of the Gilded Age that are often overlooked are Doris Duke's Rough Point and Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont's Belcourt Castle - - both of which are well worth seeing. Be sure not to miss strolling along the Cliff Walk or a drive along Ocean Avenue. Newport is a wonderfully historic port (founded in the 1600's) with tons of places to see and things to do. I can't wait to go back!
