Historical Traveller Reviews of Hyatt Regency Newport Hotel
the conference was better than the room
from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I went there for a conference last week end and were very
disappointed. the room was less than average. prices way to high for the
quality of service. the television was un watchable even with cable. down
blankets with very little down. rug worn and damaged. for a week end it was not worth even the cheapest of prices. the view from our room was of
the roof and the seagulls screaming outside our window made sleep almost impossible.
Not so great.

Very disappointing. Check-in is at 4pm, which is late to begin with. Most hotels have a 3pm check-in. However, when we tried to check in at 4:15, our room was not ready and the staff could give us no idea when it would be ready. In fact, they suggested that we sit in the lobby and wait! So, we decided to check our bags with the bell hop and go out. He told us that as soon as our room was ready, the bags would be brought up - regardless of whether or not we were in the room. We went out for the evening and returned at 11pm to find that our bags had not been brought up to the room. Overall, the service was not horrible. But it was not what I would have expected from a Hyatt hotel. More like what I would expect from a Super 8. Bottom line, I would not go back there. There are so many other hotels in Newport to choose from. I have been to several others and had a much better time.
Disapointed with the Newport Hyatt
We were so disapointed. The room was small and stuffy. The bedding was cheap and uncomfortable. The room needed to be cleaned better. And then to charge for self-parking, you have no other place to park!
For a fistful of dollar....or a few dollars more...
I had the pleasure of attending a 3 day conference at this hotel in September 2004 & was surprised at the overall experience.
I'm not sure exactly what the cost was for two nites, but I suspect $500.00 would not be off the mark as we arrived Friday of the boat show weekend and I believe NO rooms were available.
If you must be here this weekend - be prepared for the Newport version of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade sprinlkled with N.E. paranoia.
The distance away from the center of town makes a walk unreasonable - the only thing worse is the slap in the face of a $14+ a day parking fee. Only a fool would pay for what should be free. Kinda like a bottled water vending machine located next to a drinking fountain. The attendants at the entrance and the desk were helpful and professional. Never park in the garage - always out back - unless it's raining. You're begging for a fender bender - be forewarned. Poor visibility in and out.
The layout of the hotel seems a bit odd, but once learned, comical. Kids probably had fun playing hide-and-go-seek in the halls, as terrified parents chased them down. By the way, the indoor pool was emptied for repair and the outside pool was only usable on Friday, due to a Monsoon. If I had paid for two rooms for two days and NO pool was available for my children ($1000.00+), I would demand renumeration of some kind of at least 50%.
The breakfast buffet served on Saturday & Sunday was superb. One of the best I've ever eaten - even without steak-hah! Nice presentation, preparation and variety - I even ate the fruit.
And the staff!!! Well seasoned and observant. Very polite, neat and clean - a compliment to their upbringing. Any food service (or other) establishment would love to have them in their employ.
(a) YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR ON LINE ACCESS- GO TO THE LIBRARY OR BRING THE LAPTOP
(b) THE RESTAURANT SEEMED NICE, I DID NOT EAT THERE- BRING YOUR WALLET AND HOLD ONTO YOUR SEAT
(c) GREAT BAR- GOOD MUSIC & BARKEEPS. THE PRICES WON'T REQUIRE A SECOND MORTGAGE.
I doubt I will take my wife and daughter here unless I know the pool is in working order and the shuttle is operating well. It's worth about $79-$99 a nite including parking. But as long as the spending public knows no better - it will continue to flourish in this more-money-than-brains tourist trap.
I'll take the Cape any day. No suprises there.
We received this hotel with a Hyatt awards promo. I knew that this was off season but wanted to try it anyway. Yes, they do charge for parking 18 for valet. You can self park for 13 dollars but with luggage etc. it was worth the extra 5 dollars. The room was standard the furniture and bedding could use to be replaced or updated with signs of wear on both. Everything was clean and tidy. We were promised a late check out by Hyatt reservations but were informed at the hotel that it didn't mean anything. A manager approved a later check out due to low occupancy without any hassles. We would have arrived earlier if we had known that this was impossible to guarantee. Bellman and desk checkin were professional and prompt. Check in offered us any help that they could provide when they heard that my son is handicapped. Concierge was very pleasant and helpful. The grill area/bar restaurant service was slow yet waitress was pleasant having too many tables to tend to. We received food that was fair and good for the price of hotel food. The view was pretty and the grounds were well kept. I would go back to this hotel in the warmer months. The mansions were beautifully decorated for the Christmas holiday season with no long lines at all. Pool area was great and my son loved it.
Glad we only paid $100.00
We only paid $100 through priceline and in my optinions, this hotel wasn't worth that. The lobby was presentable, they charge you for parking which is ridiculous. We were in room #306 on the thir floor overlooking the roof of the lower level. The put is in a smoking floor and we were told that they did a good job cleaning the air and that we wold not be able to tell... we did. The room was pretty bad, the carpets were stained (my husband and I walked around with our sandals), the bedding had tears, the decor definately needed an upgrade. It was nice to have a second sink outside the bathroom. The room was a godd size but noisy (even though we asked for a quiet area). They start cleaning @ 8:00am and make lots of noise. We were woken up before then though, around 6:00 with the seagulls sitting on the roof top. On the good side was the service. We had dinner at the hotel's dinning room, the food was good, a bit expensive for the portion and quality you get. The wait staff was excellent! They charge $3.25 for a soda, the complimentary chocolate dipped strawberries did not seem complimentary after we saw the bill. Newport was great but next time we plan on staying outside of newport since we saw nicer hotels at much cheaper prices. If we have to pay for hotel parking anyway, might as well drive a little from another hotel and park in downtown newport.
Only the name has changed
Stay here only if you have a great price on the room. Last weekend we spent one night in one of their suites. Definitely not worth the $600 plus price. It included a large air conditioner mounted on the wall that has a loud compressor going on and off all night. The bathrooms were the 1970's design with the mirror and sink outside. The carpet was badly stained. Plus, they have the nerve to nickle and dime customers with a $13 charge for self parking. If the room was $150 it may have been worth it.
Also, Goat Island is no picnic to walk to from town.
If you have stayed here before it was a Hyatt, beware that the furnishings are pretty much the same and it overall is in need of more than a simple cosmetic face lift. The pool was closed so it may be that changes are underway, but wait until you hear that they are complete before you book this property.

We stayed at The Hyatt for 3 nights at $200 a night, which sounded very reasonable. We were very dissapointed. The room was smaller than any room I have ever stayed in..which I actually didn't care about. They charge you for parking each day...even though you have no where else to park and you are stuck!, they charge you if you want to do anyhting!!(work out on treadmill, e-mail, etc) which most hotels include....it is a walk from the town..but that was ok..we liked the walk, but if you don't...the elevators were disgusting to look at... the hotel was not very nice to look at, except for the wing that holds the conference halls and all that..that part was nice...the hotel in general was just not as nice as we expected. I have to say the people working there were realy nice and helpful! Oh, they charge you $3.00 for coffee in the morning...most hotels I have been at have given free coffee!
Nice Average Hotel
My husband and I stayed a the Hyatt for 2 nights, celebrating our anniversary. We joined Hyatt's gold passport club upon making an online reservation. Our stay was in August, so we paid a AAA discounted rate of 350/night for a regular water view room. Upon check in, we were upgraded to a suite in the lighthouse wing, which was a nice surprise, and it had a great view overlooking the water & light house. The room was two floors, with a living room area, bathroom & deck downstairs & bedroom & bathroom upstairs. The main reason we stayed at this hotel was because it had an outdoor pool (which seems to be hard to find in Newport). The pool area was average with wait service from the outdoor restaurant adjacent to the pool area. The fitness facilities were ancient, which was disappointing. Location is a bit off the beaten path. It is possible to walk to town, but the hotel does offer a free shuttle running every half hour, which we used. The shuttle stops running at midnight, so if you plan to be out later (as we did one night) you can walk home. The shuttle drivers were excellent & very informative. We used valet parking ($18 per day) - don't do it! They parked our car next to the pool outside (we walked by it often). By the time we left, our car was covered with grass from the lawn mowers and gifts from the seagulls. You are better off self-parking for less money, as there is hardly a distance to walk from the lot.
Overall, this hotel was average. I do think that 350/night is much too expensive for this hotel.
better than expected!

After reading such mixed reviews about the Hyatt Newport, my girlfriends and I were pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Our plan was to have a spa-weekend and although most of us had visited Newport before we had not tried the Hyatt or the Stillwater Spa. We arrived alittle early to the hotel and the staff was more than helpful in getting us checked in...even took my cell phone number to call when our room was ready! The room was nice...clean, with a view to the Newport Bridge.. no complaints. The restaurant is brand new with a nice outdoor deck - the food was excellent and the bloody marys were even better. As for the SPA - our favorite part - It was everything we had hoped for... relaxing! The indoor pool and the sun deck were the perfect spots to hang out between treatments. We hope to make this a yearly trip!
Top Local Tips for Newport
Parking is very limited. Walking is your best bet. Staying in a place in town allows free range to the whole Newport area without parking hassels.
Brick Alley Pub was great for lunch - awesome clam chowder! The Red Parrot is absolutely amazing - one of the best meals my husband and I have had in a long time!
eat at the Moorings
great place - get a table with a view of the harbor.
