Great weekend at the Viking

My boyfriend and I just returned from a weekend at the Hotel Viking. We bought the "Breakfast on Bellevue" package, $199/night for a premier room, free parking and breakfast. The room we stayed in was very nice, sparkling clean bathroom, comfortable bed, high ceilings. The breakfast buffet on Sunday morning was delicious. The only complaint I have is that the walls are very thin and we could hear everything going on in the room next door if you know what I mean. But overall, I would say our experience was quite impressive. It's also in a great location, only about a 5 minute walk to Thames St, and you're right on Bellevue Ave. where all the mansions are. Rates for our package started at $139, but I decided to stay away from the lesser-priced rooms based on the reviews here. If you can, it's worth it to pay a little more for the upgraded room, because I have no complaints about the size, quality or cleanliness of the room.

Friendly, Responsive Front Desk

We were at the hotel mid-March on a "Breakfast on Bellevue" package for two under $150. Not a bad deal.
It was definitely off-season as the rates were low, the lobby was empty and service was immediate. When our shower provided no hot water for morning showers, the front desk opened a nearby room within ten minutes of our call and apologized for our inconvenience.
At check out they deducted $20 from our bill for our trouble. Our final bill w/ all taxes and fees was $139., breakfast included. Where is there a better deal in Newport?
The breakfast food was just OK, no real complaint here. The waitress was outstanding, as we were the only couple eating at 8AM Mon morning. Our room was small for a "Premiere" room but clean and nicely appointed. The pool area is bright & inviting and well maintained. We would not stay here in prime season w/ significantly higher room rates and summer crowds. But then, we avoid Newport entirely from June - Sept. You should too.
Go off season and give the Viking a try if you want a clean bed close to downtown.

t Have Been Better!

My husband and I stayed at The Viking for his birthday the weekend of 1/14/05 - 1/16/05. Upon our arrival I asked if they had any upgrades available and we were promptly put into a king sized, beautifully appointed room(at no extra charge). The room was spacious with fluffy towels, cozy robes and toiletries from the spa located in the hotel. We were within walking distance to great eateries, shoppes, live music and the cliff walk. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet that was included in our package each morning. Would definitely stay here again and would recommend it highly.

Losing it quickly

Firstly.. do not stay here in season it is grossly over priced. Where to start over a year ago they replaced their chef and we were deeply sorry because the chef that was there made dining something incredible. Now their food is at best below average, typical hotel food but unbelivably over priced. But on to the rooms... ahem, or shall I say paper thin walled closet? We could hear everything in the rooms around us, especially upstairs. I don't think the viking has heard of insulation because it doesn't seem to exist. Also.. there is a reason people paint trip before putting in on the wall!! Nice white strips of paint overlapping the red (yes, I said red) wall.

In short... stay elsewhere. Definitly don't eat here.

This hotel might have been acceptable for someone like Thomas Jefferson, but not for 4 guests with tons of luggage! I stayed with 2 friends and their child while in town for a wedding in September and none of us, along with all of the other guests, were satisfied. The trouble all started the moment we walked into the room that was smaller than a 1 car garage. How are 4 people expected to sleep in such a small room? Before we had arrived, we called to make sure that a crib and a cot were placed in the room as they had no more rooms with 2 double beds. They had only brought the cot and the crib was nowhere to be found. But I guess they knew that since there was no way a cot would ever fit they decided that the crib would be excess baggage, so to speak. The bathroom was extremely small and tiles were coming up from the floor. And the "mini bar" takes up about 2 feet of space on a small tv dinner tray. A kit kat bar costs 4 dollars so bring your own snacks. I had called for room service at about 7 pm and ordered a salad and chicken sandwich and 2 sodas...for 45 dollars!!! the food was good but definitly not worth the extremely expensive price. After a while, the 10 dollar bag of cape cod chips was looking better and better when they finally arrived an hour and a half later with the food that they brought on a tray, which meant that we had to eat on the floor as there was nowhere else to put the food. I had called down to the concierge at around 9 pm to get more blankets and pillows for the cot and to make a bed on the floor for the baby and they never came! When I set up the cot it stretched (length-wise) from the tv armoire to one inch from the door and (width-wise) from the edge of the bed to one inch from the bathroom door. I wasn't sure how anyone would enter or leave the room or get to the bathroom very easily without walking over whoever slept on it.

To top off this horrible stay which only lasted one night (thank God), we found out that the hotel had given larger rooms with more beds to guests of the wedding that didn't need a room with 2 beds! They never even tried to switch people to smaller rooms to accomodate those that needed them, especially when people would have gladly switched with us since there were tons of people we knew that were there for the wedding, including family members that would have gladly made the change had the concierge given them a chance. The rates weren't too expensive for a supposedly 5 star hotel-$150. When we complained about the service and the room they offered to pay for breakfast, which had already been paid separately by an acquaintance. So they offered to pay for room service and the one night fee, which was graciously accepted. That was the only thing they did quickly.

Wonderful attentive staff

My husband and I visited Newport for the Thanksgiving weekend. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was nice even though a bit expensive. We stayed in the newer wing with bigger rooms. The amenities in this hotel are wonderful and the common areas are beautifully decorated. We had a meal in the hotel on the Saturday night and the food was good but again the staff were wonderful. This hotel is in a beautiful part of Newport and only three blocks from the main street. You can self park just around the corner if you want but we used the valets for $12 a night.

My husband and I just spent a few days at the Hotel Viking. We went there expecting history and experienced it. Newport speaks for itself, and we enjoyed all that if offered. The staff at Viking directed us to places we could go and experience Rhode Island and Newport. The Hotel was unique and offered it's own style of History. I would go again because it was so different. The service was well educated of the area and knew of all the attractions. My husband and I were very satisfied.

The Perfect Autumn Weekend in Newport

My husband just took me to the Viking for my 30th birthday - it could not have been any more quaint. We both prefer more luxurious hotels than smaller inns or bed and breakfasts and thought that finding this in Newport would be difficult, but the Viking provided everything we needed. To begin with, it is a 3 minute walk to the wharf (shopping and restaurants), situated right on Bellevue Avenue. We had a spacious room in the newer wing with the most comfortable bed one could imagine. It was decorated tastefully with very nice amenities. The indoor pool and jacuzzi are well-maintained and are so nice to relax in after a long day of walking. The concierge was extemely helpful in advising us about restaurants and acitivities. The people at the front desk were amazing, they had chocolate-covered strawberries sent to our room for my birthday! The valet person was always available when we needed our car and never took more than a few minutes to get it. I don't know what so many people are complaining about. We're both very selective about where we stay and simply cannot wait to return. Thank you Viking for a pleasurable stay!

Very overpriced for small rooms and bad service. I was there for a wedding and everyone else I spoke to agreed that the rooms were small and that the service was that of a 2 star hotel. Definitely NOT worth the 300+ they charge per night.

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend escape in May 2004. Our room was in the older wing and we thought is was decent. Would have liked it if the bathroom was bigger but after all...this is an older hotel. We both had facials and massages in the Spa Terre located in the hotel that were awesome! The indoor pool was clean and the rooftop bar had a great view. I liked that the hotel was a 3 min. walk to the center of town and the harbor. Our room service breakfast came on time and was delicious. My only complaint was that the breakfast buffet was just average - I didn't think it was work the $14. 95 a person (room service was better) and they charged you for parking. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience and would stay here again.

Don't pay the price to stay in Newport I would stay outside of Newport and save the money. The hotels in Newport itself are totally overpriced, and do not provide the level of service or quality you would expect.
