Great Historic Hotel

Having parents that grew up in the area and visting the station as a child this is wonderful addition to Scranton.

OK but not first-class

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I go to the Scranton area several times a year, as he grew up there and we come to visit family fairly often. We usually stay with in-laws, but stayed at the Radisson this time as we were in town for a wedding and wanted to be close to the action. We got the "Hot Deals" rate of $109 per night, which was an OK rate for this hotel. I wouldn't pay any more. The A/C was extremely loud when it turned on and off. It was loud enough to startle you out of sleep! There was no fan in the bathroom (a pet peeve of my husband's) and the sink/vanity/closet area was tiny, with only room for one person at a time. There was no mirror, except for the sink and closet, so this made it hard for both of us to dress and get ready in the morning. Since I had read that the rooms were small, I asked for and received a King room. The room itself was bigger than the Queen or Doubles, but the tiny bathroom area was a bummer. On the plus side, we were on the other side of the hotel from the elevators, so didn't have to deal with that noise. The bed was comfortable. We did not utilize the restaurants. We had room service the first morning for coffee and fruit. Unfortunately, the waiter accosted me when we were leaving the room, on our way to the wedding ceremony, telling me that I would have to pay my room service bill in cash as my credit card had been declined. I was majorly upset, but couldn't deal with the front desk until after the wedding, when I found out that the room service waiter was wrong. What happened was that the front desk had not run my card for incidentals, which is apparently their policy for internet bookings. Why??? I found the Front Desk Manager to be rather defensive of their policy, and was surprised that she wasn't more apologetic for the room service waiter's error and attitude. We'll probably try the Hilton next time.

Beautiful Hotel, Great Service!

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is the perfect hotel for anyone who loves historic buildings - the outside was beautiful and the inside was amazing! A lot of work was put into restoring the lobby and the mosaic roof. They've even converted the vault to a phone room. The service was the best I've ever experienced. The rooms are small but charming. The two bars are great!

a real treat!!!

We loved this hotel! How can anyone not be filled with nostalgia to walk into the beautiful lobby with marble, mosaics and old world wrought iron? It was a step back in time. The staff was most freindly and helpful---the bar in the lobby had relaxing classical music and the dining room for breakfast was just terrific. The rooms are like any other Radisson---certainly adequate, clean comfortable. I was more impressed with atmosphere of the hotel and at the price---I think it's the best deal in PA!!! I would hightly recommend this hotel---I am glad to see the city restoring historical buildings!

A Dud

from mteaches
Having grown up in Scranton, and staying at hotels when we go back to visit family, I thought I'd treat the family to a bit more of an upscale hotel over Christmas. What a mistake! Upon check in we discovered that the computer system was down. This is understandable, but there didn't seem to be a plan in place for dealing with that. We waited an interminably long time to get checked in. The room included 2 double bed and was generally satisfactory. Just before bedtime I went to prepare a bath for my 4 year old. When I turned on the water I found literally hunks of algae/something/who knows pouring out of the spout.
It was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen. My guess is that usually just the shower is used and the rest is not kept in good repair. The front desk did offer to switch our room, but since we were unpacked and my daughter was already ready for bed, we decided not to deal with the hassle. I would have expected a refund or some other offer, but none was given. We will not stay here again. The local economy hotels have more attentive staff and are cleaner.

Very Nice!

Really loved the train theme, hotel is within blocks of Steamtown, and Steamtown mall. My only suggestion is that they could add some tv stations for kids. Traveled with my 6 year old son, and he was a little bored in the room. If we had Nick ,Cartoon Network, or Disney it would have really been great. All in all, a very nice hotel and well worth the price!!!

Luxurious but small rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at the Raddison, Lackawanna Station because of location to work.
Exterior of Hotel, I was a little disappointed in the condition ( I understand it is an old building) The interior area was luxurious. It appears that they spent alot of money on renovating the interior. It was like walking into a time zone, bringing you back to the days of early 20th century. The restraunt was very elegant, the small shops reminded of days gone by. The room that I had was clean and very elegant, however it was small (single queen size bed), since I was the only occupent it was ok. The bathroom, I really have to comment, was clean, well light with old world charm from the wall sconces. The heating/cooling system was very noisey, although I was able to sleep through it. I don't like the growing trend of charging for local phone calls, and at .75 cents was a bit pricey. The data service was horrible, only able to connect at 24Kbps. IF you are looking to get away for a weekend and are into this type of accomadations, I think overall you will be happy. It is 6 blocks from Steamtown National Historic Site, very easy to walk to. I didn't experience road noise as others have mentioned, except for a Fire truck that went by. Hope this helps anyone that is interested.

Very Enjoyable Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was my second stay at the Lackawanna Radisson. On the first visit my room had a very noisy cooling system which led to a poor night's sleep. Recently stayed there again...the room was quiet, very clean and filled with high end amenities. Dining in Carmen's on both stays was very good--especially enjoy the Belgian Waffles with Strawberries & Whipped Cream for a decadent breakfast! Staff has always been courteous & professional. Would recommend!

Poor Service and Small Rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
I decided to book a room at the Lackawanna Station hotel based on its historical appeal - an rennovated train station. However, the hotel was far below standard. The service was poor, the hotel staff was unhelpful (in some cases rude), the rooms were very small and the walls were paper thin. We could actually hear the music playing in the lobby on the third floor. In addition, other than the exterior, the hotel does not seem to have retained its historical/architectural integrity. For the $119.00 we paid for the room, it was a very poor value.

paper thin walls

from A TripAdvisor Member
Cost over $100 with tax. Expecting so much more at that price especially for Scranton and Radisson name.

Rooms are small and not well maintained. The windows must be over 50 years old - drafty and lets in all the street noise.

My biggest complaint is the noise problem there. The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything. The climate control system wakes the dead everytime it kicks in! The combination of thin walls, noisy heating/cooling and street noise = 2 hours of restless sleep.

We checked out the next day and checked into the Courtyard (Montage mnt) and saved $20 PLUS we got a nicer room and got a very good nights sleep.

Stay away from the Radisson in Scranton. It is a historical building that should have been converted into a museum and not a hotel.

Oh, breakfast was bad too and pricey.

Top Local Tips for Scranton

McDade Park Mine tour Not open in winter, this tour is a MUST for history buffs, or parents who want their children to understand the realities of the past, including child labor and poor working conditions. I dislike closed in spaces, but the spaces were large enough to be comfortable, with mannikins posed in the small spaces actually used by the miners. It has not been turned into a Disney site, but was a real working mine.

Mall at Steamtown A nice clean mall within walking distance of the hotel. Since we're Canadian, any shopping trip in the U.S. is great. We were able to pick up some real bargains (check out Steve & Barry's if you're after a bargain).

Lackawanna Coal Mine Try to go o this tour. Itwas really interesting.
