disappointing stay

from Charlie3446
The service at the hotel was not up to standards for a hotel representing itself as a high end property. One evening my room was not cleaned until after 6pm. This was after a call to management with a promise that it would be cleaned no later than 4. Each day the room was cleaned late and made getting ready for evening business meetings very hard. Check in was extremely slow. They had a convention coming in and only had two people on the reception desk. The rooms were nice and the beds were great, but at the prices they charge you expect service and they don't provide it. I would recommend the Omni one block away; same quality with much better service.

Went Out of their way to Assist

Checked into the Westin June 18th to catch the Mariner/Pirate Series. United canceled my flight from Chicago to Pittsburgh that made me late for the start of the game. The Westin front desk rush-shuttled me from the hotel to PNC Park for free so I wouldn't miss all the game. GREAT PEOPLE! My room was large and spotless with such a comfortable bed that I had a hard time leaving it in the morning. Heading back to Pittsburgh next summer with my wife and we are going to be staying at the Westin.
The Hotel is close to most everything worth seeing in Downtown. My one gripe is that if you have a car, expect to pay $20.00 a night for parking.

Great room!

We went to Pittsburgh for one night of drinking at the Hard Rock so we choose a hotel on location and price. The Westin fit the bill at $99 and within a few blocks. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel was better than expected. The lobby was large and nicely decorated. The staff from the front door to the reception area were very friendly.
The best part was the room. The decor was above average for a ROH room with a comfortable chair and plenty of amenities such as a coffemaker, hairdryer, internet hookup and the best shower head I've ever seen in a hotel.
We would definately stay here again.

OK but not great

My four day stay here in late February was uneven at best. Rooms were nice and the staff was friendly. However, I was billed twice for the room (0nce when I made the reservation and again after I checked out). Also small charges to use the fitness center and internet service strikes me as gold digging when paying high dollar for room rates. Also parking is extra. Restaurant on ground floor is pricey, so I did not eat there. I did have a drink at the bar area and the service was good. Location is good with my view looking directly at the Convention Center.

felt like an outsider

My room was very nice and the hotel itself is a pleasant, convenient place, but there were a couple of howevers. I left my room early on a Saturday morning and when I returned at about 5 pm the room hadn't been made up. I called the front desk and they told me they would call housekeeping. I awaited word on when and if my room would be cleaned. I was quite hungry and wanted badly to take a shower, but didn't want to be in the bathroom when housekeeping arrived, so I went downstairs to the front desk to inquire about the status of my request. They told me housekeeping would be taking care of it within the next hour or so.
I decided to have a seat at the bar, order a beer and some munchies while I waited. The bar was busy, but there were available seats. I sat down and picked up a menu, waited at least five minutes for the bartender to acknowledge me -- which he finally did -- as he moved to clean up the area in front of a group of four who had just arrived. He cleaned up their space, took their drink orders and provided them with drinks. He then moved on to fulfill a waitress's request and then got a beer for another customer seated at the bar and moved on to someone else. He never looked in my direction or made any attempt to take either a food or drink order from me. I got up and walked out the door to the restaurant across the street and got my beer and munchies there. I read the paper, took my time, and when I went back to my room housekeeping was still there. I wandered the halls, checked out the business room, wandered the halls some more, went back to my room and it still wasn't finished. After about ten more minutes I could get in there to take a shower -- at about 7:30 pm!!
I went out later that night and arrived back at the hotel at about 4:30 am. I was asked to show my room card before they would let me onto the elevators. I found their request offensive. I'm sure an argument could be made that it was for security purposes, but I had the distinct impression they thought I was there for a paid tryst, so to speak!
Again, the room was nice, the rest of the stay was OK -- nothing grand, just OK -- but these mishaps made me uncomfortable. I should let management know how I feel I suppose.

What goes around...

The most striking aspect of our recent stay at this Westin during the NRA Annual Meeting was the unfailing courtesy, helpfulness, cheerfulness and just plain superb service by everyone on staff. Everyone had a smile for us, from the bell captain to the housekeepers to the wait staff in the restaurants and the checkout clerk.

When I queried our waitress one evening at dinner, asking, "Why is every employee we've met demonstrating the definition of 'hospitality," she replied, "We get a lot of big conventions here at the Westin. Your group has been the friendliest & most courteous of any we've hosted. When you're treated with respect it's easy to respond in kind!"

There's a bigger message or two there.

Pittsburgh Problems

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at this hotel in January 2004 because I was attending a meeting at the Convention Center. When I first arrived, the checkin staff were very slow and ignored people standing in line. Finally got my room key, dragged my luggage upstairs, and the key didn't work. When I went back down stairs to the front desk and explained I needed another key or another room, the guy had the nerve to tell me I had to 'jiggle' the handle to get the key to work. He asked whether I had pulled up on the handle; he did not want to give me another room. I told him I was not going to fiddle with a broken door everytime I wanted to get in my room. The other clerk gave me another room but she made no effort to apologize for the problem and acted like giving me another room was an imposition. And don't plan to eat in the hotel restaurant at closes for the evening. You'll have to brave the cold (in January) going to a restaurant outside the hotel or eat in your room. There were some good things about the hotel...the bed was great, my room was clean, and the bellman was extremely helpful and very friendly. But I'm not sure I would stay here again.

Paying for the name not the service!

I stayed at the Westin for a College Fair that was taking place at the convention center next door. While the hotel was convienient, I would perfer a friendly staff to a fancy name anyday. The Concierge was RUDE!
She rolled her eyes at me when asking questions as if I was bothering her. If you do have to stay here DON'T eat at The Original Fish Market.
They won't split your check and then make you feel guilty when you ask to compromise. Our waitress yelled at a member of our table and double tipped her self by taking all the person's money who paid with cash and never brought change. She didn't refill our drinks either. The only good thing about this hotel was the friendly vallet. He was very kind to me while I was staying there. I was not impressed by this 4 star hotel at all! If you can avoid it!

Enjoyed the Westin

My wife and I stayed here one night; 10/25. Very nice hotel. The bed/bath was lovely. Location was good and the staff were very nice. A fine place to stay if you are in downtown Pittsburgh.

Simply Heavenly

from A TripAdvisor Member
What a fabulous experience from a great hotel. From the moment I arrived I felt as if I was the most important person ever. The doorman opened the door to our rental car and welcomed us to Westin and it only got better from there. The front desk clerk welcomed us and explained that the hotel had recently undergone a partial renovation and that we were booked in a newly renovated room. The room was "heavenly" to say the least. The large TV, heavenly bed and of course the heavenly shower were fantastic. I felt as if I had a suite instead of my king room.
When my wife went to look for ice the nice room attendant took the bucket from her and brought us ice back. She was a delight the entire weekend. We dined for breakfast in the Orchard and loved the buffet option. We ate dinner out and didn't spend too much time in the hotel, but the late evening drink in the Fish Market bar was served quickly by the bartender. Overall it was a fabulous stay at a property that is doing it right.

Top Local Tips for Pittsburgh

Getting Around Skip the rental car and go with shuttles or cabs. All public transportation in the downtown area is free.

Get the shuttle bus to the airport which will cost you $20 while a taxi ride wll be about $40 including tip

Incline Railroad and Washington Heights Take the incline railroad (Duquesne) to Mount Washington. Several very good restaurants there. I recommend the Georgetown Inn for great food and view of downtown Pittsburgh.
