There is a reason Hilton is selling this property

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is by far and away, the worst Hilton I have ever stayed at. I Have stayed there multiple times (for business) and found the customer service level to be aweful. Long check in lines, small / old feeling rooms. As a HHonors gold member, I would advise staying at the newly remodeled Double Tree hotel in Pitt(formerly Ramada Inn).

Will Not Return

The air conditioning in the rooms no does not provide cool air after the summer. As a result, I couldn't get the temperature below 75 degrees or so, which made for very uncomfortable sleeping (I didn't sleep much at all). There's not much in the neighborhood, so walking around is boring. There's a long wait for elevators. There's a 15 minute wait to get a taxi cab in the mornings. First place I've been to in years that didn't provide your bill under your door on the day of checkout.

The Pittsburgh Hellton... avoid this at all costs.

I had a reservation at this hotel for a king bed/non-smoking, guaranteed for late arrival. When I arrived to check in, I was told that the hotel was oversold and I'd be checked into a "parlor room", which has just a sofa sleeper. Since I've been suffering back spasms, I asked again for a regular bed room and was denied.

Turns out that "parlor rooms" are really meeting rooms, and you can tell that they are in use constantly for meetings because of excessive wear on the carpets, basins, furniture, etc. These rooms are not and cannot be cleaned to a degree that any traveler would expect.

So I check into the first parlor room. The sofa bed is so FILTHY, it looks like it came from a college fraternity house. I lift up the cushions to pull out the bed, and I immediately see a CHOCOLATE BAR WRAPPER, A HALF-EATEN PRETZEL ROD, several LARGE DARK STAINS, and a lot of other visible dirt. And this is supposed to be my $200/night bed that I confirmed two weeks ago with reservation for late arrival!!!!!!

Then I dig through one the closets to find the bedding for the mattress (they don't do this for you), and the clear plastic bag holding the bedding is covered in some STICKY SLIME. It was absolutely disgusting. I cannot understand how in good conscience Hilton can sell these rooms to customers with guaranteed and confirmed reservations.

The next "parlor" room I was checked into was equally as dirty, and was already occupied by a LARGE FAMILY OF BIG SPIDERS, who had taken up residence in the corners of the ceiling, and had spun webs between the lamps and the walls. The tiles on the floor were filthy, as were the basins in the bathroom.

When I spoke to the hotel manager, I was informed that his hotel routinely overbooks and places guests with confirmed reservations into these parlor rooms. This is an unethical, disgusting, abhorent business practice that Hilton must stop.

Great location, small room

from Graciecc
I stayed at the Hilton Pittsburgh and Towers for one night this weekend. I booked through Priceline, which was mentioned when I checked-in, but the desk clerk asked for my HH number and fulfilled my request of a room with a view. The room had a teriffic view of Point Park, but was unusually small for a Hilton - just one queen bed. I didn't mind because the stay was only one night, but I wouldn't have liked it much had I booked a stay of 3 or more nights.

The room was clean and had newer furniture. It was very nicely decorated with nice linens, a down comforter and down pillows. The bathroom was very tiny and had some sort of rubber sheet covering the ceiling - moisture control, perhaps? No hair dryer, which was surprising, but there was a small fridge and a coffee maker.

This was a great location for my purpose (Pirates games at PNC Park, a short 10 minute walk from the hotel.) I parked in a nearby parking garage, which I thought would cost $8 and wound up costing $16. Still better than $24 for the hotel valet.

Elevators were quick, lobby was nice, doorman was friendly, hotel in general was quiet. We did have a few drinks in the hotel bar after the game. Only one waitress was working and it did get busy; service was so-so, drinks were so-so.

Overall, I was pleased with the Hilton and would stay there again.

Great Location, Good Hotel

from Coastal-Confessions
Great Location--right downtown at the confluence of the three rivers. Hotel is within walking distance of Heinz Field, PNC Park and we even took an extended walk to Station Square and the inclines. Hotel is older-60's style but clean and nice. Booked through priceline and we had a nice room on the back side of the hotel with 2 identical bathrooms. Would stay here again. Avoid Hotel Valet Parking $20+ a night and find a nearby garage for half as much.

terrible service

from A TripAdvisor Member
There was a water main break downtown and the hotel had no A/C. Understandable that this was out of their control, but they did not let the patrons know ahead of time (it had happened 2 days before), and they were very rude when we asked about it. The rooms were at least 95 degrees inside and there was no ice in the hotel. No one offered to help carry luggage, open a door, nothing. Worst of all, there was no discount given and in fact they made it seem like it was our fault that we didn't know ahead of time to try and make other arrangements. Even though this will be taken care of and not a regular occurence, I was not at all impressed with how the hotel handled the crisis. Terrible, TERRIBLE customer service!! Not to mention the fact that it is old and needs updating. Will never stay there again.

Concierge, Customer Service, where? Not Pittsburgh Hilton

from A TripAdvisor Member
How kind of the Pittsburgh Hilton to take in the Gateway Tower's residents August 17, 2005 when a water main broke. No Airconditioning but at least electricity. I called the Concierge between 5 PM and 6PM 8/20/05 to specifically request that the Concierge find someone to visit my mother's(Hilton Honors member)room on the concierge floor and assist her in using the phone. I specifically told the Concierge that she is elderly, physically challenged and been displaced from her home in an emergency situation. I specifically requested someone show her how to attain an outside line. I guess I assumed that the Concierge on the Concierge floor was there to assit the guests. I was informed by the Concierge that the displaced Gateway Tower residents were "squatters" - (guess there was a big demand for the non air conditioned rooms!) , and a hotel maintenace man - the least customer service educated staff, came to her room and told her that her telephone lines were fine. Nice personal touch! The attention to the Hilton Honors' customer's needs were far from satisfied by the Concierge, the most customer service educated staff that exists in a hotel to see to the guest's satisfaction on the Concierge floor. I would like to share this approach to a Hilton Honors guest who puts all thier family up at the Hilton and uses the restaurants alot. Guess the Hilton Honors program does not ensure customer friendly service for a Hilton Honors guest who in the case of an emergency was paying for a room that was not airconditioned, or perhaps the concierge is not there to assist in customer service for these Hilton Honors "Squatters". Certainly not what I was taught in the 5 years of Management with Hyatt Hotels or the 5 years of Management with the Adam's Mark Hotel.

Stayed at the Hilton Pittsburgh Downtown the weekend of July 30th and could not have asked for more.
The staff was friendly and helpful from the minute we arrived to the time we left.
We booked on line with hotwire for $84.00 and when we found out where we were staying we were very concerned because of all the negative reviews. But, when we got there we could not have been more pleased with the service, to the room and amenities. We were given room #1233 and when we opened the door we were pleasently surprised. It was a suite with 2 full baths, 2 fullsize beds that were the most comfortable beds ever and a view from our room of downtown Pittsburgh and the river. We also had a seperate sitting area (that was seperated by a wall ) with a sofa 2 endtables and a coffeetable Just can't say enough about this hotel. Our weekend was fantastic. You are close to the subway if you want to go to Station Square or walking distance to all of downtown.
Would stay there again in a minute.
Parking Is a little expensive $21.00 a day.
But there is a parking garage, I believe on penn ave. a block and a half away that is only $5.00 a day on weekends. So drop of your luggage and park there it is only a short walk away.

We gave your reserved room to someone else

from A TripAdvisor Member
For my daughters 13th birthday we planned a special trip to Pittsburgh to see a dance recital and tour the City. I promised her 1st class all the way. The flight from Jacksonville was great, the dance recital was great... but when we went to check in at 11:30 PM, we were told that the room for two nights was no longer available, they had given it to someone else.... even though it was booked in advance. Far beneath what I expected from a Hilton. Oh, and by the way they did put us up in a Ramada Inn for the first night and told us we were on our own for the second. Needless to say my daughter was disappointed!

Not What We Were Promised

from jsyden4535
This hotel is beautiful at first glance. The lobby is elegant. We booked through Hotwire and received a great price. We confirmed with the hotel and were told we were booked in a one bedroom suite with parlor. Turns out the one bedroom suite was one room total and a TINY TINY room at that. The room had one double bed (possibly full) and there was approximately two - three feet all the way around the bed to walk. That is it. We contacted the front desk and were told that they wouldn't know why their personnel would have told us the wrong room type - although they were able to see what I was talking about on their screen. They told us that they did have the room available that I was confirmed with, but it would be about double what we paid. Did I want it? HA!! So - needless to say - don't count on anything if you don't book through this hotel - because they may not honor what THEIR employees tell you.

On the upside - the furnishings were nice and the bed was VERY comfortable as many have said. The decor was nice. The location is great for games - well within walking distance. But - parking at the hotel is REALLY expensive - about $21.00 per day. If you go around the corner about 1.5 blocks - there is a city garage that was only $5.00 over the weekend! MUCH MUCH Better! Just unload and then park!
