Historical Traveller Reviews of The Westin Philadelphia Hotel

Just Okay

from MAGalinNC
Despite the reviews on Tripadvisor, we chose the Westin because of the bargain price and because we wanted to try the "Heavenly Beds." We would have enjoyed our "Heavenly Bed" more had we been able to control the temperature in the, cold, hot, cold. Also, the tub in the "Heavenly Bath" was filthy. There was no way I was putting my bottom in that tub. They seem more concerned about selling their "Heavenly" products than assuring that their core product is quality.

The lobby is lovely and the two tier elevator really didn't bother us. The bellstaff, reception, and concierge were very friendly and helpful. Probably could do better from a location standpoint, particularly if you would like to go out for dinner.

I went here from December 10th-12th, I got there shortly after 3, 3 being the check in time, was greated at the front door where they take your car, and charge you $31 a day, a little pricey but any hotel in a major city is pretty short on parking, and they can charge it. You walk in on the first level and have to take an elevator to the front desk, the walls are marble and everything very clean.
When we made it up to the front desk there was no line and the staff was very friendly. All requests were granted, and we were allowed right to our room. When we got to the room the cleaning woman had just left, but the room was big and clean. The bed was huge and of course heavenly. Anything we could ask for was there, starbucks coffee, waters, drinks, blow dryer, iron and towels galore. The bathroom itself was very clean with, not two, but one robe. I don't understand why they would only have on bathrobe, when the average number of people per room is probobly two.
Saturday morning we ordered room service for breakfast, a nice way to spend $40 on eggs and bread, but when you go away this is what to expect, we got out food almost immediately, and can't complain about the food itself. Saturday night we ordered a bottle of wine, it came up shortly and they informed us that they were out of the bottle of wine that we had ordered and they upgraded us to a more expensive bottle for free. Sunday morning we also ordered room serivce, there is something so nice about eating breakfast in bed, without cooking, after an hour of waiting, we made a call to the front desk and the meal was compted, no so bad after all.
The mall is so convienient to be attached to the hotel, there are about 12 stores, but it was nice to be able to shop, go upstairs to drop off the bags and continue.
All in all the staff was friendly, the food couldn't be any better than it was, and the room was great. My only suggestion to this hotel along with all the others lies in one word, DOWNY!!!! The bathrobe felt like paper, and a touch of downy on everything else couldn't hurt. overall the Westin Philadelphia only made our time there better, and i will stay there next time i go.

A great hotel

I stayed at the Westin in early Aug. I found this hotel to be first class all the way. The room was excellent, very very clean, the bed, well what can one say, it was great. The lobby is very nice. The staff could not have been nicer. There was always a greeting when one of the staff passed you by. The staff was very helpful in answering all my questions. The hotel is located in a perfect downtown setting. Easy to reach all the sights, public transportaion is just a block away. You get what you pay for, and the Westin certainly offers good value for your dollar. I shall return.

d Stay Again

We've stayed at the Westin a few times. It's a great location and the beds are very comfortable. However I have always gotten my rooms via Priceline (less than $100 a night) and probably wouldn't pay more.

Service without a smile

from btsbts
This Westin is a dissapointment despite its great location and beautiful building. We experienced high prices, bad food and a staff attitude that practically screamed "We don't care". Its a shame. With a decent chef, and a friendly staff more eager to treat their guests like...well guests, this could be a wonderful hotel.

OK but not great

My review in one word....ehhhh. We got a good rate off of Expedia for this hotel. The bathroom was dimly lit and the room decorations were looking a bit long in the tooth. The location was good, however, and close to many attractions. The service at the bar left alot to be desired -- the Barcelona soccer team was staying there, and it was the night of the game, and the bartender on staff sent his help home. Then he got swamped and inattentive.

Very Average

If you break the seal on the mini-bar, be prepared for a charge on your credit card. I did break the seal, but used nothing and was charged $21. I used express check-out, so I thought everyghing was okay. I did drink two bottles of water that was on the table that came to $8 but that was far from $21. After two telephone calls and 6 days this was finally resolved, with a $13 credit to my account. I stayed there New Years Eve 2003. There was no room service at all. I was pretty much left on my own. I was not happy with the experience.

charges, charges everywhere

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was somewhat disappointed in my stay at the Westin. When I pay that much for a hotel room, I don't expect to have to pay $4 for a bottle of water (conveniently placed on the first table you see as you enter the room) or $1 for each local/credit card phone call. Everything else was overpriced as well. They talk up the fact that they have these great bathrobes, but you only get them if you ask. Parking is very expensive as well. They also charged me for using the mini-bar which we definitely didn't use. I am still fighting them to get that charge reversed. I recommend staying somewhere else when you want to stay in center city Philly.

Rude Rude Rude

Hotel was nice but the service was horrible, the first impression of the hotel was the worst and most rude person i have ever come across, unhelpful and very unpleasant. DISAPPOINTED and glad we were there only one night.

Nice place except for the telephone charges

from A TripAdvisor Member
we stayed at the Westin from December 4-7.Very friendly and helpful doorman. Room was quite comfortable and large. Nice kingsized bed bed.Prety good fitness center with four treadmills and other machines. However we did not like the $1.50 charge for a local call and a $2.00 access charge for an 800 number call. That is just annoying and should be changed. Otherwise we liked the location even if it is no longer a Ritz Carlton.

Top Local Tips for Philadelphia

Flat rate taxi fare to and from the airport It's $26.50 flat rate fee too and from the airport. Alternatively you can get a train from 30h Street station to PHL.

Great breakfasts at Marathon Grill If you are staying in Center City Philadelphia a great place for breakfast is Marathon Grill. Very hearty food, fast service and nice atmosphere. Most breakfasts are less than $10, and you won't even want lunch! Locations at 16th and Sansom and Broad and Chestnut.

Best time to see tourist spots If possible, hit the tourist spots during the week, and midday.
