Historical Traveller Reviews of The Sheraton Society Hill Hotel

nice hotel, nice stay

from AAS
We were at the Sheraton Society Hill over Memorial Weekend. We also had a prom night there but did not notice any noise or other disruption. The hotel is simple but nice, loved the beds, most importantly it is walking distance to the historical district. We loved being a couple of blocks from everything without the noise and crowd of being in the middle of everything. All in all a nice stay.

Despite Harsh Reviews...not bad at all

from NYCBeachBoy
I was half dreading staying here because of the previous writers comments. However, since it was only to be for one night, I thought I could manage. I can report that my room was very comfortable, well equipped and the new Sheraton beds really are wonderful to sleep on. The staff was pleasant and there's a Sheraton pledge of satisfaction that I think our earlier reviewers should have asked to have enforced. The neighborhood is quite charming and undergoing a major restoration. The low rise hotel will never provide great views but mine, overlooking a quiet street, was fine. I should mention that my stay didn't coincide with a Prom night which may explain the overall difference in my stay from those of the previous reviewers.

My daughter and I atayed 2 nights - June 4 and 5, 2004. Our first room was very nice but turned out to be directly over the ballroom where a senior prom was being held on June 4. It sounded as if the drummer was right outside of our window. We asked for another room but the front desk never called back. We relocated to another room for our second night. That room was smaller and hadn't been made up properly. We had to call for additional pillows and linens. The grout in the bathroom was very stained and I had to fix the toilet since it kept running all of the time. This was room 3151.

I think with some thought and effort on the part of the hotel staff, our stay would have been nicer. I had expected better of a Sheraton.

Great location but extremely noisy.....

The hotel booked a high school prom on Friday night (June 4) and the walls of the entire place were literally pounding from the PA system being used in the ballroom. The party didn't end until after midnight. It was way too loud and I was appalled that management didn't tell them to turn it down. I wouldn't stay there unless you get an assurance from management that there aren't any large PA systems being used in the ballroom during your stay.

Good location, nice hotel.

Our second stay in Philadelphia brought us to this hotel. It sits across the highway from the Hyatt and the large Hyatt building blocks any view of the water. The view is not the problem here, the regular rooms four 4 people that makes it tight. The rooms are not fancy but do have most everything you need. We found out on our last day that they had large club rooms and I think will give them a try next time. Front desk staff is a little dry and act like they need a day off ( but don't we all ). The hotel is very nice and has a nice sports bar, restaurant and indoor pool. Location is great and you can walk to everything and feel safe. Society Hill homes in the area are a must to see. A sunday morning walk is the best to view the quiet streets. Try South Street at that time, it seems normal in the before noon hours.

Comfortable room and well located, but one problem...

from A TripAdvisor Member
Was given what I thought was a pretty nice room in a corner with 3 windows and a treetop view--it was ordinary sized, but quiet and comfortable. The quiet ended abruptly when my neighbors (a family) came back to their room at midnight. The room had one of those double doors that can be used to connect to the adjacent room, and I could hear every word they said loudly, and clearly. It's not that they were particularly loud, its just that the doors were not thick enough or soundproofed. If you notice one of these doors in your room, I urge you to ask for another room immediately, or your stay will be ruined, like mine was. Otherwise the hotel was fine, and is in a nice historic area.

Gave away our three rooms

from A TripAdvisor Member
We reserved three club level rooms for four nights and guarenteed late arrival with a credit card. I read one posting here where this hotel had given away someones room, so I called the day before just to let them know we would be coming and would be late. As it were our 11:40 PM west coast flight got in around 3 AM. So the fatigued six of us with all our luggage get to the hotel around 4 AM and we are told the last shift gave away our rooms!! We were ballistic to say the least. The clerk starts calling around and the town is pretty much sold out, until he gets to the Four Seasons. So Sheraton winds up comping us three rooms at the Four Seasons. As soon as we checked in I knew there was no way we were going back to the Sheraton. I was able to negotiate a decent rate at the Four Seasons for the rest of the stay and told the clerk to call the Sheraton and let them know we would never return. Do not go to the Sheraton Society Hill. A reservation guarantee means nothing there as attested two by two parties on this site.

Treated Awesome!!!

from jupekl
Me and my son stayed there from March 19th-22nd ,2004. This was one of the best, nicest and cleanest hotels ive stayed at, besides being in a great location, the hotel staff was great treated us very courtous, and were helpful. The Wooden Nickle staff, i have to say, were great, great beer and wings, so when i see some bad comments, wow!! totally different then our stay,,,,i would stay there again , anytime iam there,,once agian thanks for making our stay awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great lobby!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Went for the St patty's weekend. Staff was very friendly and accomodating even the bartender that I saw in previous review didnt fair well. But, I found everyone to be great. We had a problem with the remote control for the TV, called down to the front desk and had a new one within minutes. Pool was clean, jacuzzi nice and gym wide variety of workout equipment. Found restaurant to be quite pricey and well as parking. They say parking is $22.00 per day, but with taxes and all $25.00 plus tips for valet parking. Much cheaper public parking right down the road, with easy access to car. Lobby was the best, especially Saturday nite. Everyone hung out, talking and drinking. Overall nice experience, would try again:)

Fast and Very Simple Access from Airport

from A TripAdvisor Member
Really easy to get to this hotel from the airport. And the travel time was fast - like ten minutes to arrive at the hotel. Traveled with my sister on business. Within walking distance to all the sights: Independence Hall, Constitution Museum, Society Hill, Olde City, South Street, Market Street, etc. The trolley that tours the city makes a stop at this hotel, so that was convenient. Pool area is neat, with the skylights. Has hot tub and a baby pool - which you don't see too much of anymore. I used the exercise facility; nice and newer equipment.
Equipped with women and men's dressing rooms/lockers with a shower and sauna! If you want a true Philly Cheesesteak go to Jim's Steaks on South Street; Jim's has been in business since the 30's. Expect lines around the corner on weekends - but worth it. Get it with cheese whiz.

Top Local Tips for Philadelphia

CityPass Get a City Pass if you plan to see a few things. The included tour bus can be used as transportation around the city.

Duck tours You must go on the Duck Tour round the streets and on to the Delaware River. This is a World War 2 amphibious vehicle that goes on the road and water. Fantastically knowledgable driver/captain tells you all the historical, amusing facts during the tour with musical accompanyments.

Gatting Around Philly When you are sightseeing or just moving around, please let me recommend you check out 2 methods of transportation, both easy and inexpensive. The first is FLASH, a trolly-on-wheels, all are colored PURPLE, you can’t miss them. You can spot their stops when you see the two “wings” on signposts on corners. They run every 12 minutes on their oval route that runs all the way from one river to the other across town, from Penn’s Landing and almost to Amtrak. Fare is $1 a trip or $4 for an all-day pass. SENIORS (OVER 65) RIDE FREE. We found they don’t take the time to ask for your ID, just say “Senior” and if you look the part, they smile and tell you to take a seat. The other system is the trolley that operates around the square that is the historic part of Old City. It is bordered by Market Street at the Visitor’s Center and up about three blocks to Christ’s Church. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GET THE LITTLE PHAMPLETS FOR BOTH OF THESE TROLLEY LINES FOR BOTH OF THESE ROUTES, AVAILABLE AT THE VISITOR’S CENTER AND OTHER LOCATIONS. ALSO ASK THE DRIVERS. You can use these two little systems to get almost anywhere you want to go and the city bus system is much more confusing and you don’t need it unless you’re going to the boonies. Please don’t miss Reading Market down on Market street! FLASH goes right by it.
