Very nice hotel with great location

from LV2SLSA
The Holday Inn express Midtown was a very nice hotel for this price range. Location is ideal because it is within walking distance to theaters, shopping, dining and local tourist attractions. There is a great gelato place around the corner on 13th street and Sansom.

The lobby and my room were clean. My room was nicer than some hotel rooms that I have been to in other large east coast cities that cost twice as much. There is an outdoor pool on the 6th floor. There is no fitness room.

The staff was very friendly. The continental breakfast was more than what you get at most other hotels. There were freshly made cinnamon rolls, cheese omelets as well as toast, fruits, hard boiled eggs, cereal, juice and milk. There were no pre-packaged pastries that you usually get at other places. The staff always made it a point to welcome me and check to see if eveything was to my liking during breakfast.

The only down side I had experienced was that the TV remote didn't work (room 1203) and the toilet paper was more like paper than tissue. No big deal.

I would have no problem coming back to this hotel.

good hotel for price

The Holiday Inn Express was a great bargain for the buck. Reasonable walking distance to all local attractions and subway to sports complexes. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the free breakfast was a great start to the day. The staff was friendly and helpful with directions. We never felt unsafe in and around the hotel.

Fourth of July weekend

from wpvisitor
My family of 5 stayed at the Holiday Inn Express over the fourth of July weekend. We made our plans somewhat last minute. I searched the web for hotels and the rate of $148 a night - at a hotel with brand recognition was the best I could do. I believe I was given inaccurate information from the Holiday Inn reservationist on the telephone - which later impacted my stay. Check-in at the HI Express is 3PM. We arrived at 1PM and the front desk politely refused to check us in till 3PM. They accepted our luggage into the baggage check but would not take my name nor assign us a room number. If would have been nice to been able to freshen up or retrieve some items from our bags. After seeing some of the local sites we returned to the hotel about 6pm and checked-in with no problem. The room was large, clean and comfortable. However, we could hear the conversations in the adjacent rooms. Elevators slow. Breakfast buffet was nothing but carbohydrates (tasty but not very healthy) but the staff in the breakfast galley were wonderful. Pool was ok, outside on the 7th floor, had no life guard and didn't open until 11AM even though it was a holiday with many families on vacation.

Leaving the hotel is when we encountered difficulties. There were many homeless and mentally ill persons panhandling or sleeping on the sidewalks which made my daughters very uncomfortable.

The 1PM check out was very much appreciated

Overall we had a good time. The crowds in Philadelphia for the 4th were very manageable and well behaved but if we return to the city of brotherly love I will stay at the Holiday Inn on the other side of the Liberty Bell.

Overall okay

I got to the hotel pretty late at night-about 9 o'clock. Check-in was slow because there was only one person behind the counter and three different people checking in. Room was fine-instantly turned on the air conditioning: the room and the entire hotel in general was very warm. Bed comfortable, rooms clean (except for toilet), quick service (we needed more towels). The room never cooled down though and the air conditioner was extremely loud. The thermostat in the room read between 68-71 degress the whole time we were there-this made the room stuffy and there was no way to open the window.
Overall, the stay was fine-I'd skip the continental breakfast-not much of a selection and all the juice dispensers were empty. When mentioned to the attendant, no juice was ever brought out. Easy check out (done on the TV). One large plus: great location, easy to get a cab.

value and location

from travellerfromatown
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express during the Film Festival. The location is very convenient to many restaurants and shopping. The rate was very good for a big-city hotel--about $109. The convenient parking garage was a blessing, and only $18 a day, with in-and -out priviledges. The king-bedded room was clean, quiet, and comfortable...and quiet large. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant on-site, but Philly is restaurant-heaven--so enjoy! There is a fantastic gelato place just down the street--I think called CapaGiro at 13th and Samson--best gelato outside of Florence.

great location, perfect and adequate

from libratravel
We just returned from 4 days at the H.I. Express. We were in town for a convention and found this hotel most convenient, and at the right price. This hotel is very convenient to the convention center, and Rittenhouse Sq. Breakfast is decent...with something for everyone (even though its served on styrofoam). Basically, if you stay here, you'll save some $$$ and can use it to enjoy the most wonderful downtown Philly restaurants such as El Vez and Cuba Libre. Plus, an amazing gelato restaurant is right around the corner. A generic hotel, but perfectly safe and clean.

Decent hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
It was an average hotel -- not great but not horrible. Parking was a pain, as it's mostly first come first serve ($18 for hotel guests). The staff was friendly - most of them were "in training" so I just had to be more patient with check in and requests. Great Indian restaurant right across the street. I'm not staying there again just so I can see other hotels, but it was fine. The breakfast was good. High speed internet was just fine, too.

Very good

from MD_MD
Overall, a great value hotel. Nice clean rooms, friendly staff, very comfy beds, nice bathroom, free newspapers. I thought it was a good location - nothing seedy about it at all. They let us check in early which was really nice. Rooms were quiet at night & there was a reasonable view from the room.

Best things:
- free wireless internet access
- great free tasty breakfast

Bad things
- nothing serious really
- the pool was closed, which was a shame, but it is an outdoor pool so it will be closed all season.

Good location

from twilsonb
Visited Philly in September 2004 for the weekend. Stayed at the HI Express Midtown because of location, price and pictures on the web. First, the pics do not do justice, the hotel is not quite as nice as the pics indicate. On the other hand, it is not bad, the rooms were standard size and clean. Location was good, we walked everywhere from Penn's Landing to the Art Museum and the hotel was centralized. On downside, some of the people on the streets at night can look pretty tough in this neighborhood so know where you are going and don't stop to talk to people. Hotel security was adequate though. For quality a bit pricey at $99 a night, but for location it evens out. Would try it again.

Good Hotel and Position in Philadelphia

from us2000
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Midtown Philadelphia for 1 night in August 2004.

We found the hotel to be excellently positioned to the Historic District of Philadelphia, although it was a little close to the seedy area nearby (came across several "interesting" characters walking back to the hotel one evening.

We paid rack rate due to neccessity of requiring accommodation then and there, but wasn't disappointed with the accommodation we had paid for.

The hotel is also close (short walk) to Suburban and Market East train stations.
