Historical Traveller Reviews of Embassy Suites Philadelphia Airport Hotel

Nice hotel but poorly maintained

from chris_schene
The hotel ambiance is quite nice.

They offer a free happy hour (free beer, liquor, snacks) and an excellent made to order breakfast. They also have a nice, if slightly over priced, retaurant on the premises. The staff is very nice as well.

The hotel also has the only gift shop in the Bartram avenue hotel complex.

I really like the Embassy rooms for long stays (I am in philly 10 weeks on business): There is a bed room and a living room and a mini kitchenette with a refrigerator and microwave. When I travel I have always had a problem gaining weight from eating restaurant food, so I eat out only once a week and other days cook Healthy Choice or WW prepared meals in the microwave.

The hotel is poorly maintained, however: I have stayed here 4 weeks now and there is always a maintenance problem with the rooms. AC, door handles, lamps not working. The place seems to be falling down. One of the three elevators has not been working for a week now and creates a real bottleneck during busy traffic times.

They offer high speed internet for a 9.95 fee per day, but I just use my dial up line instead.

Do Not Touch Anything

On a positive note the bed was very comfortable and the location to the airport is very convenient. When you arrive at the airport you need to call them to pick you up, the shuttle does not come on a regular basis like other hotels at PHL. The shuttle back to the airport only runs every 30 minutes so you need to plan for this lack of convenience. Now the bad news. The first room they assigned me was literally 15' from tables in the restaurant with the waterfall immediately outside the door. I asked for a different room. The second room I was assigned, and stayed in, had to be one of the filthiest rooms I have occupied in 25 years of business travel. Everything was sticky. In addition, the tub had several cracks, the grout around the tub/shower was discolored, cigarette burns on the sink, the toilet did not flush unless you held the handle down, the table in the living area was dented, scratched and the book they leave on the table was stuck to it, and there were many areas where the wallpaper was coming off the wall. The carpeting was frayed and stained in numerous spots. With many other choices in the area, stay here only as a last resort.

Customer Service not a priority

I stayed at the ES for 3 nights in September. This is the 3rd time I've stayed here. I attend a Women of Faith conference in Philly yearly and we use this hotel. This year, due to a paperwork mixup, our contract was sent in late. On behalf of the hotel, I will say that they worked very hard to accomadate us in light of the fact that they were booked for the weekend. However, they had overbooked by 30% which is the first mistake. So we got our rooms (king, smoking instead of double beds/non-smoking). My room smelled so gross, my roommate was having allergy attacks the entire weekend. The first night we arrived, before we realized that this was a group problem, not just our individual problem, we called the front desk. I was spoken to very nicely, and then eventually it became clear that this was not just my problem, but my groups as well. So anyway, after that call, my roommate called down to request another blanket as she was planning to sleep on the floor. Well, she was rudely spoken to and then hung up on. We never got the extra blanket. The breakfast is good. They make awesome omlets. The fresh fruit selection is fair. The evening reception is poor. Cheese doodles and pretzles are the snacks offerred. I will return here, b/c we come to Women of Faith every year, but I would suggest that the desk staff get extra training in customer service. If the lady was irked with me, fine, but a blanket should have been sent. It wasn't our fault that the hotel was overbooked.

Poor maintenance and amenities

from A TripAdvisor Member
Generally poor maintenance. Of the four bedside light fixtures in the two rooms we rented, three were burned out on arrival. One of the drawers in the kitchenette couldn't be opened because the handle was missing. This is the first suite-style hotel I've stayed in where you had to request dinnerware from the front desk; there wasn't even a bottle opener in the suite. The internet connection, instead of being at the desk in the bedroom was under a small end table in a corner of the living room; there was no good place to put a laptop (except your lap) when it was connected. The maid failed to replace an empty Kleenex box in the bathroom for at least two days. The food in the restaurant was grossly overpriced; I don't recall seeing any dinner entrees for less than $20.

So-so Embassy Suites. Could be better.

We stayed at this Embassy Suites quite a few years ago, probably before this helpful website existed. Judging by the reviews here, it seems as if nothing has changed since we stayed there. I personally prefer to stay at an Embassy Suites whenever possible but this particular one did not impress me. Unlike other Embassy Suites hotels that I have stayed at (Cary, NC and the one near the Pittsburgh Airport), I did not find the hotel to be very well maintained. The indoor pool was very cold and the water was not clean. It looked like someone had taken several handfuls of the "foam" that collects on top of the hot tub when the jets are on and dumped the foam into the pool water. Overall, we were very disappointed with this Embassy Suites. The managers reception was about worthless and there was not much variety of foods offered at the breakfast buffet (usually Embassy Suites has a cooked-to-order breakfast). The room wasn't too bad although it was a bit noisy while we were trying to sleep. The atrium of this hotel really carries the sound, making the waterfalls loud enough to hear in the rooms. Also, depending on the location of the room, there is some noise due to the proximity of the hotel to the airport, but it wasn't too bad. What really disappoints me is that this Embassy Suites isn't one of their older properties, where one can expect some wear and tear. It was built in 1990 and the very first Embassy Suites was built in Overland Park, Kansas in 1984. Maybe the manager should read the reviews of his or her hotel on this website and fix some of the maintainance problems, but unfortunately most of the staff here don't seem to care about the condition of the hotel or the needs of their guests, which is very sad. I would probably not stay here again.

Okay stay

We stayed here recently while in Philly to visit family. We had three rooms, and had only one major complaint during out stay. Two of the rooms were in good shape - everything worked, and everything was comfortable. The third room had a overly squishy sofa, and for one of the days of our stay, the air conditioner didn't work. The A/C was eventually fixed, although it took more time to repair than we would have liked.

We enjoyed the full breakfast every morning. I was expecting a more continental style breakfast and was pleasantly surprised to find everything I could possibly want, omlettes, eggs made to order, pancakes, yogurt, fresh fruit, bagels, donuts and more. The breakfast and maid staff were pleasant. The maids were happy to clean around our napping children's schedules. We informed them early in the morning about the children's nap time, and scheduled a room cleaning time with them.

We were in the center of the hotel and weren't bothered too much by the waterfall on the ground floor, or the piano music. I could only slightly hear anything in the living room, and could hear nothing at all in the bedroom in the back of the suite. The kids loved to watch the fish and ducks, so the water was a plus for us. The pool was a little too cool during our stay, but we did enjoy the fact that the 9-10pm hour was adults only.

It's true, there is nothing by the airport. If you are coming to Philly to see the sights - none of the airport hotels are for you - stay downtown. It is close to the ballpark and football stadiums, and if you are going to be traveling around on I-95 and I-476, the airport hotels are very convienient.

Satisfactory-Not great

from flalady
I stayed here for 8 nights on business. We started at a different hotel in Philly and came here. When I first walked into the room, it was clean but hot. The A/C wasn't working. I called the front desk and they immediately had someone up to fix it. Ok, not so bad, but my room looked out over a parking lot and train tracks. Yes, the trains were audible. So was the airport traffic, but since i was working, I was up early. The bed the first night was horrendous, so bad that every time I turned, I ended up in a depression in the middle. The next morning I called the front desk, who assured me that the mattress would be changed. When I returned from work, guess what? Same mattress. They sent up a service technician who told me that the matteresses were being replaced, but that they had no new ones to swap out. I immediately requested a new room. Room 2's bed was just as bad if not worse. All I had to do was sit on it to know is was terrible too! Room 3's bed was better (not perfect), but acceptable. The problem with this room was that the refrigerator did not keep things as cold as I like and the bathroom was in need of some repair. Tile was cracked and the faucet had a slow leak. The atrium was pretty, but the waterfalls were quite loud. The elevator was quiet, but slow. The Embassy Grille's food was adequate, but pricey. There is a Ruby Tuesday about a block away, but I didn't eat there. For anything else, you'll have to drive. The manager's reception was nice with free beverages. The "appetizers" for the reception weren't much to speak of, though. Breakfast was very good the first couple of days, but it got boring, because it was the same thing. Eggs, potatoes, corned beef hash. All in all, it wasn't horrible, but I've stayed in better places.

Folks, my family and i spent the first week in July 2005 at this hotel and i will be honest i got on Trip Advisor to check the reviews and passed them on as a few angry tenants, man what a mistake i will never question trip advisor again this site was built for us and should no be taken lightly!
The hotel is ment for anyone that does not mind being treated 4th class my kids went to the pool area the first day and a old black gentlemen id all of them and would not allow them access to the pool without state ids or a mother or father as guardians granted my kids are 17 and 16 and we have been in pools all our lives we still needed permission to swin in a hotel i pre-paid for.
Every day there seem to be some sort of party of function held here which ment that NON PAYING / STAYING guest were permited in the pool but mind you, kids must exit the pool at 9:00pm and there are atleast 3 staff members there to kick them out NO LIE!
On the second day i went up to the front desk and complained to the about no running water in my bar area and a knob that would not turn in the bathroom sink up to this day the problem still remains.
On the 3rd day i complained that the $4.00 water bottles were always missing and then they were re- stocked ending in a $8.00 a day charge to my room daily, i had to ----- the last day to get them removed from my bill!
Now, when we checked in there were 4 used wine glasses outside my room from the previous guest i had to throw them away myself the 3rd day cause house keeping never picked them up, but they are banging at your door every morning before 8am ready to clean so they can go home early and if you dont answere they come in!
Breakfast will reain the same. EGGS, POTATOES, every freaking day!!!! Sorry Embassy to many monkies here and its a jungle if you know what i mean!

On the downhill slide

from Eswau
While I’m sure this hotel is designed for business travelers passing through the Philadelphia area, our family stayed here for a week while I went into town each day for business. Parts of our stay were nice and other parts took away from our experience.

Our room was located in the middle of about 10 rooms that had been set up for some type of outdoor equipment sales convention. Several times people knocked on our door asking to see our display. The hotel finally put a sign on our door saying we were not part of the convention.

One afternoon my wife and kids ordered room service for lunch and the tray was still sitting outside our door the next morning when I left for my meeting (18+ hours later).

The cleaning crew didn’t clean the room until after 3 each day even though we requested an earlier cleaning due to the kids needing an afternoon nap.

I also called the hotel to ask them to pick me up at the nearby train station and two days they did but on the last day they never showed up. The Marriott van felt sorry for me standing out in the sun and drove me back to the Embassy Suites.

Not the hotel’s fault, but I would caution anyone about a family staying near the airport. There is only one restaurant nearby and about six large hotels. You will have to drive to anything you want to do. The ES restaurant is too pricey for the average family paying with their own money (i.e. not an expense account).

Overall, not too bad of a stay, but I would choose somewhere else the next time I’m in the area.

Disgusting !!!

We stayed here because of its convenience and full breakfast in the morning.
We have stayed at Embassy Suites before and have always found them to be above average. However, this one should be an embarassment to the name. It is not only old and needs updating, it is also dirty. The room we had contained left over items from the previous guest and something around the kitchen area smelled so badly it was nauseating and we couldn't find words to describe it. We could not eat in our room and could barely sleep.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone! tWhen we checked in the front desk clerk also told me I could not walk the stairs because of security (they were locked). I told him someone would have to walk up with me then because I would not take the elevator. He was baffled, but thank goodness one of the maintenence men was behind the desk and pointed me to internal stairs that I could walk up.
They also placed a charge of $45 on my bill for internet we didn't use. We don't even own a lap top. Managed to get that straightened out only because she said since we stayed only 1 night and the $45 was for a week it couldn't belong to us. I said it didn't matter what the charge was - it didn't belong to us.
Also the place was overrun with kids and some running through the halls barefooted. Where are the parents? Where is security? We asked for a quiet room; we were told there wasn't one.
The shuttle drivers and a couple of the desk clerks were helpful; the one on duty when we checked in was not!!

Top Local Tips for Philadelphia

Shuttle + Train station = flexible travel Why rent a car? Take the airport shuttle to the train station inside the airport. Grab the trains to almost anywhere. Parking in Philadelphia is both hard-to-find and quite expensive. Save the headache and take the train.

dont go here if your looking for a nice clean town, sure there are some historical sites but most other parts are dirty. it was a major upset. i do recomend the duck ride through town though and seeing the liberty bell and all that but other than that get out

Please Touch Museum Philly has a great children's museum called the Please Touch Museum. If you have young kids, you don't want to miss it.
