Avoid at All Cost

My wife and I booked our stay through CHOICE HOTELS website, which is the managing company of this hotel. We asked for early check-in at 11:30am.....we were told to come back at 1pm. Returned at 1:30pm, told they clean the less-popular, less expensive highway view rooms first, so we would have to wait for the river-view room we reserved to be cleaned....please check back around 3pm. Check back at 3pm, river-view room still not cleaned / ready, please come back at regular check-in time which is 4pm. We arrive back at 4:45pm, wait in line and FINALLY get the pass-card to our river-view room that we reserved and have been waiting since 11:30 am to check in to. BIG (---)PROBLEM! WE ARE LOOKING STRAIGHT OUT AT THE HIGHWAY! Back down to the lobby to straighten this out.......Guess what....."You made this reservation over the internet, so we cannot guarantee the room you get" was the staff excuse. We explained we made the reservation through their parent-company website, of which both my wife and I are priority/corporate users, and that better count for something. I told the clerk to cancel our reservation, and rip up the credit card form, and we were going to get a room elsewhere (Sheraton was nearby and could more than accomodate us). Suddenly, we had a river-front room and the attitude disappeared. In retrospect, we should have bailed and gone up the river/street. Beds were stiff as a board, the coffee in the morning was aweful, and the staff attitude is absolutely unforgivable. I should know, I got to see at least 3 diferent shifts in the course of one day. I would / will NEVER stay here again. I have spent many nights in Philly and can recommend multitudes of places, but this hotel just plain SUCKS! PLEASE TAKE MY (OUR) ADVISE.....spend a few extra dollars and stay at the Holiday Inn or ANYWHERE else. OR be prepared to post a diatribe at this website.

overcharges and fake charges!

I made my reservation at yahoo! duyring a convention week. supposed to be 755 plus tax (would have been about 900 total). these geniuses broke it down into three charges starting at about 135 then 145 then 160/night saying the 107/night yahoo! reservation was "just an average." HQ says "sir we would love to help you but you made reservation thru yahoo!"

I did not PAY yahoo I paid Comfort Inn.

I am disputing over 300 of the amount with my credit card company.

Also, I just got my May credit card statement. There is an additional 123 charge for Comfort Inn on the statement. I am disputing this as well.

Also the breakfast buffet had inadequate seating and selections.

The shuttle to downtown is a great idea but they need to run a second one during the morning rush and not wait until the AM for Gas and repairs.

TRAVEL TIP: Try to book your hotel in a package, (ie: Philly Overnight, etc.) because you get free parking with free in-out and sometimes free tickets to events in the area and wonderful coupons. Visit GoPhila(--)for great packages.

Beware the phone charges

This Comfort Inn charges $4.00 for the first minute of long distance calls and $1.00 per minute thereafter. When I got home after my trip, I noticed a long distance charge of over $118 on the invoice of one of my student travelers. The phone charges were more than the daily room rate. I called the hotel's front desk and was told that the charges are posted next to the phone. Inasmuch as I used the phone quite a bit and never saw any rates posted, I can only guess that they must be hidden from the guests really well. Beware!

Nice hotel

In November, I travelled to PA for four days with a group of honor students from my university here in SC, and we stayed at the Comfort Inn in Philly. We arrived at the hotel at about 6 in the morning (after travelling overnight on a bus), and the hotel was nice enough to allow us to eat the breakfast and stored our luggage in a meeting room while we toured Philly all day before checking in. The breakfast was pretty good and the staff kept restocking it; we never ate until 8-9 in the morning, but they always had plenty of food for us each morning.

The room was pretty nice, and all of our rooms had a view of the river and it wasn't noisy. None of us stayed in the room very much, but from what I understood, no one on the trip had any problems with their rooms. The hotel's TV got very few channels, but we were only in the rooms for a few hours a day to sleep, so this wasn't a problem for us. Since we took a chartered bus, we didn't have to park cars, but my friend's cousin (who lives in Philly) came to visit us, and apparently people who aren't guests can also pay to park in the lot. From what I observed, the parking fee was actually cheaper than several other places in the city. I suggest parking your car and walking or either taking public transportation. Just make sure that you have change for the buses. If you're flying in, you probably shouldn't rent a car either.

A couple of restaurants delivered to the hotel, so two of the nights my roomies and I had pizza and cheesesteaks delivered. It was a much better deal than eating out, and they delivered late into the night. The staff was also very helpful in giving us directions and helping us find which buses to take. We also had one girl travelling with us who is blind, and the hotel provided a fridge for her medicine and made sure that she had priority on the shuttle (she is also in a wheelchair).

The only remote problem I had with the hotel was on our last morning in Philly. That morning, there was no hot water in any of our rooms. We were all ticked off about this, but from what I understood it was beyond the hotel's control, and they gave us back a couple hundred dollars of what the school paid for the hotel (which goes back to us honors kids in the form of other events).

So, if you're going to Philly and want a nice hotel that is convenient, this is a great one to stay at because it's walking distance to lots of attractions and the staff was pretty nice to us.

Stay at this hotel only to save money. The room was clean enough, but the bed was rock hard and you're sandwiched between hiways. Bring earplugs. The highlight of the Comfort Inn is its shuttle service. The driver to us straight to our destination & would pick us up. When in Philly, you really want to be leave your car parked for the duration of the visit. The hotel is in safe enough area to feel that your car is secured and that you can walk from there, but be aware that you're going to be a bit of a distance from food. Comfort Inn doesn't have a restaurant and the vending machine selection was weak. Not many restaurants seemed to deliver there either, so plan your meal strategy in advance. The shower faucet dripped the entire time and the TV remote didn't work. THis is a great place to leave your belongings then trek around the city and return to your room exhausted enough for a deep sleep. Another plus of the Inn is its proximity to all of the historical attractions. But if you want comfort, amenities, and style, don't stay here!

Boring, bland service, $17.25 per night parking. No way. We asked front desk clerk what was going on in are. She said nothing. In Philly? She just didn't care. Room overlooked freeway, rock hard bed, just not a hotel to recommend. Loved Philly but not this hotel.

Many benefits for low price

I have to provide an after the fact review for this hotel after reading some of the other reviews. We stayed for 5 nights in October 2004. We paid more for a river side room and it was worth it. Very quiet room, decent size, clean, and the bathroom was fine with lots of space for items, plus coffee tea set ups.

The views across the river were lovely and we walked to the old historic area daily...felt very safe doing this and we are in our 60s. In fact, the only time we moved the car after checkin was for a symphony concert one evening. We walked everywhere else.

On negative side: if you are diabetic, the breakfast will not work for you. Juice, sweet breads, sugar loaded cereal, etc. They did have fruit and coffee also. However, I do know that this is the type of thing that many eat daily, and it is included in the price. We were on a very long east coast trip and needed to save money and this hotel worked perfectly for us. Easy to get to, good parking, and close enough to good sights and restaurants, plus a view. I am sure if you only pay for the expressway side there will be noise from the traffic. We had factored that into the room we reserved.

This is not the Ritz and if anyone expects that, you will be very unhappy. But we felt we got exactly what we paid for.

Good Price

Room was clean and reasonably sized. Free continental breakfast was ok. Complementary courtesy van was great. Drivers were friendly and accommodating. The location is close to the river and the historical part of the city but it was also located next to a highway.

Historic Area Motel

Very adequate motel within walking distance of historic sites in downtown Philadelphia. A nice free shuttle if you prefer not to walk.

The motel rooms were clean and adequated maintained. Shower spray could not be adjusted.

The breakfast is a typical motel free breakfast with cereals and breads with coffee and juice.

Parking is expensive at $17.50 per day in addition to room rate. Parking was convient.

Penn's Landing is across the street with musem and tours. Good resturant.

Top Local Tips for Philadelphia

Getting around Use the "PHlash". This is easy and cheap. $1 for one person to any of the stops. $10 for a family of four for a all day pass.

Keep shopping and sightseeing separate The historic sites are nearly all close together in the old downtown district and the main shopping area is further West. Taken together the whole area is simply called Centrer City. Take one day for the history and another for the shops.

walking to historic district From the hotel, one can either walk south one block, ascend the stairs, and walk over the highway via Market St. or walk north 1/2 block and cross under the highway via Race St. (a much easier option). Either way, it is a short walk to the subway stop at 2nd and Market.
