My room was filthy. The carpet had not been hoovered, and a week later, still wasn't. Cigarette butts under the bed, filthy mirrors, enough dust to stuff a mattress. The washbasin plug broke, as did the ironing board, also one of the lamps. I stopped complaining and cleaned the room myself.
The hotel is in an excellent location with free parking. Staff are friendly, and the food is good. The housekeepers must ensure the rooms are cleaned properly.

never again!!!!!!!!

from craigster17
The place needed a renovation 15 years ago. There is no a/c in the rooms. The showers were cold - hot- cold - cold - cold. I have to have internet access for work their site says they do well when I found that I could not connect I called down and they asked what room are you in? I guess if you have the room above the lobby you will have access. The food was nothing to brag about. The staff was pleasant. The room was a clean as it could be. You could only watch acouple channels no sports! The cost of this place is so far away from a value it made me sick to think how much I paid to stay there!!!!!

Disgusting, Terrible Place

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our one night stay was the absolute worst hotel experience I've ever had. The hotel itself is extremely dark, dirty and smoky. The beds sunk into the middle, the shower took at least 15 minutes to drain. The worst experience was being woken up at 4am by people partying in the next room - the walls are paper thin and we could even hear a guy coughing. I called security three times to ask our neighbors to quiet down to know avail. And then went down to the front desk myself to request assistance. They finally sent someone up, and during the 15 minutes or so I was downstairs at 5am, there were several "couples" asking for rooms for several hours. All in all a very sketchy hotel with no redeeming qualities.

Horrible with a capital H

from angelslame
From the other reviews, this place hasn't changed. We have always had great luck with Best Western. But this location was the pits. Renovation was desperately needed even then. Late night staff was decent, but day-staff needed a shake up. Big locks on doors were visible everywhere. Gift shop was never open. Hallways were dark, carpets dirty and ceilings low and water-stained. Lobby was uninviting. Only good things were price and location, oh, and the fact that, being in Philadelphia, you proably never be in the hotel except when you're sleeping and your eyes are closed! Don't eat here either. Restaurant help was non-existant. We sat down for a late lunch and except for whatever kitchen staff their might have been, the one waitress disappeared about 2/3 through our meal. Sandwiches took nearly 2 hours!

Great Location, Horrible Everything Else!

Ewwww. I am not a hotel snob by any means, but this has to be the worst place i have ever stayed(including hostels). Luckily nothing went terribly wrong, but we basically were only there to sleep. The staff was indifferent AT BEST. Interior of the whole place needs a renovation in the worst way. One look at the place gave me the creeps, but it was the cheapest place i could find last minute. The only good point i can mention is the Location: One block across the parkway, right next to the Rodin museum, you can actually see the Museum of Art from the front door, and there's a police precinct across the street.

Convenient

Clean, great location to museum. I like the free parking the best. Adequate for a short stay.

nice reasonable priced hotel

I stayed at the best western with 5 others during live 8. The hotel was comfortable and clean, and also quite reasonable for the price. The staff were helpful and kind and we always had enough clean towels. no complaints, i would definately stay again.

Indiffernt staff who run a deteriorating hotel

from KitKat59
Deteriorating facilities coupled with an indifferent night staff made this visit a memorable one to say the least. We stayed here over the New Year because it was so close in proximity to the art museum.

Plumbing problems in the first room occurred very late well after midnight, after several calls to the front desk we finally got the desk clerk to change our room (they wanted to send maintanence up in an hour or so). The "new" room had a heater so loud and grating (it's 20 degrees outside) we had no choice but to leave it on. The lamps in the second room did not work but there was an easy solution: my husband still had the key for the 1st room so he traded lamps out of the first room and brought thm to the 2nd room. The bed linens did not look clean so I slept in my clothes. We finally got to sleep around 3 AM. When we arose around 7 am to shower, the shower ran hot to cold, scalding hot back to freezing cold and the side of shower curtain that faces the shower was covered in mold.

We decided around this time we might as well laugh and chalk this up to a "travel memory."

We wrote to AAA who, at the time, rated this hotel three stars, it has since been dropped to 2 stars. We got a letter back from BWCenter City which was less than apologetic. We are the customer, and paying $150.00 a night we at least deserved a good night's sleep; that we did not get but we did get plenty of attitude!

I highly recommend you steer clear of this hotel on your next visit to Philadelphia Center City, Pennsylvania

Great No Frills Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I visited this hotel to attend a conference. So most days I was gone for the whole day and I came back very late at night. The hotel location is a few blocks from the hustle and bustle of downtown Philadelphia. I ended up taking a $5 taxi to and from downtown Philly everyday. Single guests, especially women, would probably not feel comfortable walking to and from this hotel at night. It's surrounded by lots of businesses that close at night.

I stayed in a renovated non-smoking room on the first floor, and I had a great room. No complaints. My favorite thing about this hotel was the free WI-FI internet service. I also loved the 2 in 1 shampoo! It smelled like Orange Creamsicle!!!

The location is ideal for visiting the museums, but there aren't any cool or trendy bars or restaurants nearby. This is compensated for by the fact that there's a Whole Foods Market around the corner with a fantastic Take-Out section.

Some reviewers here feel that this hotel needs a facelift. It definitely has that dated 70s pulp fiction feel of an Elmore Leonard novel. Hotel prices in Philly are just high, and while this places charges over $100 a night, in another city this hotel would only be worth $60 a night. Before choosing to stay here, figure in the price of taking taxis back and forth from the main downtown core.

s basic purpose

from bluesealover
Stayed at Best Western Center City 5/5/05 to 5/8/05. Basically, we just needed a place where we could easily walk to the art museum to see the Dali exhibit which we got untimed VIP tickets for. I freaked out when I read the previous reviews and tried to change hotels three days before we were to check in, but unfortunately the other hotel I tried didn't have any VIP Dali tickets left, so we decided to grin and bear it.

Yes, it's smokey. We got a nonsmoking room, which didn't smell like smoke for the most part, but I noticed when we went to bed at night and when we woke up in the morning, we could smell cigarette smoke. It was not heavy, but distinct enough to be recognizable by our super-sensitive noses.

The decor is tired looking. Some areas of the hotel does look remodeled. I saw a bathroom for employees and restaurant users on the first floor that looked very recently remodeled. The rugs appear to be recent, maybe five years old. Our room was clean. Rug looked clean, not worn out. The wallpaper and furniture looks like it was from 1985. Bed was generally comfortable, had nice thick fluffy pillows. No bed bugs, at least I believe so! I was paranoid about every single itch on my skin! TV is newer looking (I was thinking of those big old tvs with knobs and wood paneling!). Bathroom is another story - sloppy re-caulking behind the sink, old tile on the walls, styrofoam ceiling above the shower (which is low, so if you're taller than 5'9, you'd be bending over the shower spigot!). On the positive side, it was CLEAN and we had hot water.

We had a hard time finding a good place to eat breakfast close by...had to walk over to the other side of the Ben Franklin and down one of the business districts for a cafe. The location is great for the art museum and the Rodin (which is right in front of the hotel), but if you wanted to see Old City, you'd have to take the Phlash trolley. The stop is just in front of the Rodin Museum, a couple blocks' walk from the hotel. That was a pain for us because the Phlash does not come every 12 minutes as the brochure and website promises! We waited 30 minutes one time, and another time the trolley flew past us at 2nd street (and a big group was waiting for it!).

This hotel basically served it's purpose - a place for us to stay with FREE parking. If we stayed at the other hotels, we'd spend a lot on parking!

However, if you asked me if I would go back there again, I would probably say no, unless I brought my car. If I didn't have a car, I'd stay in the nicer hotels closer to everything so I'd walk around more and not use that slow Phlash trolley service.

Smokey

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is located near Philadelphia's museums, the 30th Street Station, and Universities, but that's the best you can say about it. The web site says the place is "newly renovated," but that newness has long been washed away in years of smoke and grime. The rooms are small, the crowd in the hotel bar are roudy and love to smoke, and that smoke seems to go everywhere. We all suffered from the air of those rooms and corridors after staying two nights there. Pay a little more and stay elsewhere.
