Can we say claustrophobic?

from venice4504
For the money that you spend at this hotel, one would think that you could get a suite that had enough room to pull out the sofa bed AND still walk in to the bedroom. It's silly at how small the rooms are. Also, be aware that there is really no place downstairs in the lobby to sit if you have children under 21. The main room is a bar and they can make your life miserable if it's busy. We have stayed here about 4 times due to theater ticket packages and I wish every time that we were somewhere else.

Beautiful Hotel

from DavidDC
I stayed in a "petite" room. While the room was, I guess, smaller than others in the Hotel, it was average sized for a hotel room. The room was very quiet and immaculate. The serivice at this Hotel is stellar. Who can beat the personal concierge who escorts you to your room, asks you what you'd like to do, and actually shows you the "trick" to making the kettle boil. I got incredible value for money at this hotel. One of my top choices.

Close but No Cigar

Nice location. Historic. Good vibe in lobby. Warm fuzzies disappeared when I saw my room. Small, unimpressive and worn looking. Consolation prize: excellent hotel restuarant.

We loved the Heathman

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at the Heathman February 10 to 13, 2005. We had an executive king room that was extremely comfortable and very quiet - no noise from the street or the hallway. The bed was better than the "heavenly beds" we have stayed in at Westin hotels. If you are tired of the cookie cutter chain hotels, but like the convenience of high speed internet access, room service and other amenities not found in bed and breakfasts, I would highly recommend the Heathman. Also, the restaurant is fantastic!

Almost...but not quite

My partner and I travel several times a year to Portland and have now stayed at the Heathman 3 different times. The staff, overall, is very pleasant. The rooms, however, are somewhat disappointing. Out of 3 stays, each matress we've slept on is very worn and really should be replaced. In one suite we discovered stains on the sofa and carpet that were absolutely gross. We requested a room chage and they happily moved us. The location is excellent as is the food. And the original art and 1st edition books are quite impressive. For the money, we were disappointed and on our next trip, we're going to try the Benson.

With better organization could be great

from Annie2B
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Heathman over New Year. The young staff were very friendly and polite but the lack of organization and explanation of a package was simply inexcusable in a hotel of this reputation. The suite was what I expected but could have used some renovations. Mismatched lamps, stained sofas and carpet are not good. Having said that the dinner for two was quite exceptional. By far and away the best room service dinner I have ever experienced. I would not stay at the Heathman again... but most definitely will go back to eat there.

Good, but not great

from hopefulwanderer
We stayed at three hotels in Portland during our stay in Oregon. The location of the Heathman puts it ahead of the competition. We used the valet parking and although it was expensive, it proved to be well worth it. Our room was a bit small, but the gorgeous bathroom more than compensated. I thought we might have a noisy night when we found the earplugs on the pillows, but I think the hotel management were being overly cautious - we had a quiet night. The staff were professional though perhaps not as attentive at the other hotels.

Bad Experience at the Heathman!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I almost feel bad writing such a horrible review since this hotel was recommended to us by friends & family. I made a reservation on-line about 5 hours before we arrived thinking this should be sufficient. We drove 3 hours from Seattle and arrived at dinner time so we were tired & hungry. We walked in with armfuls of baggage which we weren't offered any help with. When I gave the concierge our name he said over and over it would be just a minute while he locates our reservation. He actually left the desk and went somewhere?? then about 20 minutes later came back and said he found it but it would be a moment more until they get our room ready (still no help with baggage). Now it has been about 30 minutes and finally he gives us our keys. Since we were in the lobby for so long we did notice how beautiful it was along with the bar area. We assumed that would be how the rest of the hotel looked... wrong! Once we got off the elevator the hallway was very dark and dingy, I knew something was really wrong at that point. We open out room to find out that it was a smoking room!! It was extremely dingy & smelly (not what I expected for $180 a night!). We stormed back downstairs and ask for an explanation. The concierge said unfortunately (he used the word "unfortunately" about 50 times to us-no joke), this is the only room available. Why didn't they tell us this when we made the reservations?! Or at least right when we checked in?! So he finally called numerous hotels and found one for us at the Paramount (which was awesome by the way) and we got the heck out of there!

Mixed Feelings - I had wanted to love it!

I had very much been looking forward to our stay at the Heathman. The room was excellent and the food superb and the location is second to none. We were able to upgrade our room on arrival as our internet rate had us book a small room. Apart from one or two members of staff who were delightful, warm and friendly - I was dissapointed that The Heathman did not appear to pay attention to the finer details which make a difference.
Having said that, my positive notes above are genuine.

Wonderful Hotel

My recent stay at the Heathman Hotel was wonderful! The hotel staff was excellent--always friendly, helpful, and completely professional. The service was truly outstanding in all regards. I was given one of the "Petite Deluxe" rooms because I had received a discounted rate from an internet site. While the room was indeed "Petite", it was very tastefully furnished and did not feel too small. Everything in the room functioned perfectly, which is (unfortunately) a rare happening at a hotel. The room amenities included all that you would expect from a luxury hotel such as robes and slippers as well as other items including q-tips and cotton balls in the bathroom and herbal tea. The turndown service included bottled spring water, filling the ice bucket with ice, and turning on the CD/radio. (I actually would have preferred the radio being left off.) The Heathman Hotel has a fantastic location only two blocks from the light rail (MAX), Nordstrom, the Portland Art Museum, etc. Downtown Portland is a vibrant place filled with people and many interesting shops, restaurants, and cafes. I loved my
stay at the Heathman and definitely want to stay there again when I have the opportunity to return to Portland!
