Great place for those who like to cook their own meals and save $

from A TripAdvisor Member
I'm not sure if some of these folks stayed at the same hotel because I had a great time. I stayed at the Inn at Northrup Station from August 31 - September 4, 2005.

For what it's worth, the Inn at Northrup Station bills itself as an "all-suites" hotel, so why would they have room service?

In fact, this is the main reason I chose to stay at the Inn. I wanted to cook my own breakfast and lunch and save money for shopping and/or a nice dinner out. The kitchen in my suite was stocked with just about everything -- baking dishes, pots and pans, drinking glasses (including wine) and an assortment of kitchen utensils. Add in the dishwasher and it felt like a home away from home. Plus there's a Trader Joe's within walking distance of the hotel.

My room was on the ground level. Despite its location, I rarely heard any noise outside of a few kids running down the halls. I found the king-size bed to be quite comfortable and the bathroom was clean and restocked each day of my stay.

While I didn't spend much time watching TV, my room did have cable, including channels such as HBO, Cartoon Network, and CNN in addition to the local Portland channels.

The hotel's location puts you near the great 23rd Street shops and restaurants. It's very easy to walk around, or catch the bus or trolley to get around the city. There were many buslines within a block of the hotel that got me to downtown Portland as well as back to the airport.

I have no doubts in recommending the Inn at Northrup Station.

bad food

there is no mini frig in your room, only a regular one, the continental breakfast in the main area is horrible, the coffee the only saving grace, there is no room service and the walls are thin, so you are at the mercy of all your neighbors, if you do go please book top floor, it'll help. the staff is young and untrained, no graciousness, just boredom and occasional rudeness, the decor is tacky, you cannot smoke or bring pets! YUK! and there is no cable tv

Unimpressed

The Inn at Northrup Station was a bit of a disappointment. Our room was horribly lit and despite the very nice full kitchen and funky design, it felt like a motel room. We did love the neighborhood and the value for the dollar was still good -- it also included a continental breakfast -- but in the end, we decided we'd rather pay a little bit more to get a little bit more.

Great neighborhood, but....

I agree with other reviewers that the hotel doesn't live up to it's appearance on the website. Isn't that what all hotels do...put the best foot forward on the web? My husband, 2 1/2 year son, 4 month old daughter, and myself stayed here for 2 nights. The neighborhood is perfect--more residential feel with great shops and excellent restaurants---many of which were family friendly. The hotel's decor is fun and funky although a little cheap looking. The room was sizeable especially for the price with a very nice kitchen--a must with kids. We stayed on the street side and had a great balcony but no chairs! Lighting was a little dim in the room. The bathroom was large and nice with marble sink. Continental breakfast was better than many and had very good coffee! Conveniently located on the trolley line and close to downtown but away from the frenzy. Here's the problem---we had ants in our kitchen!! Althought everything appeared clean it makes you wonder! All in all, due mainly to the location and lack of other hotels in the area, I'd stay again!

Nice place in a quiet neighborhood

Stayed here July 15-18, 2005. Very impressed with the hotel for the price (about $130/night). Great staff..clean and quiet rooms with kitchen and living area...nice breakfast and snacks during the day. The streetcar stops right in front and they give you free passes! Great restaurants and shopping in walking distance. Would certainly stay here again.

Thanks, but no thanks

Walking into the hotel lobby, I was hit with a musty smell. The staff was very personable upon check in and helped me acclimate to the baby food yellow walls, technocolor floors and eccentric lighting fixtures. Wandering to my room, the floor was loud and the hallway echoed, a tell-tale sign that the walls are thin and building not soundproofed. Entering my room, I was hit with a burst of heat and another shock of must. After cranking the A/C and opening my balcony door to attempt circulating the stale air, I unpacked. The room was mostly clean, although the vacuum cleaner missed a couple spots. It was apparent the carpet was chosen to hide problems, not ensure thoroughness. That evening, I slept comfortably, as the pillows were soft and plenty and the bed was a pillowtop, however, I woke the next morning with the bottom sheet near my waist and most of my torso on the mattress. I was slightly disgusted and decided that I wanted fresh linen every night, to ensure my bedding was being changed and I hoped properly made, so I left the conserve energy card on the nightstand as instructed to for fresh sheets. Entering the shower, I unrolled the shower mat, to find it still wet from its last using... I hope it was from the previous morning and had not been left to sit and collect mildew. Returning to the room that evening, my A/C Unit had been turned off and I was again hit with the hot and musty air. Turning down my bedding for the night, the sheets looked as though they had been slept in before as they were not crisp, but I gave Northrup Station the benefit of the doubt. The next two days, I repeated my experience. By day four I had learned that in order to keep the sheets from sneaking down to my waist, I needed to sleep in the middle of the bed and strategically wedge pillows between the bed and nightstand to keep the corners from coming up. On the fifth day of my stay, my suspicion of not changing sheets was confirmed as a feather that had come from the down was still on the sheets that evening. To further confirm my suspicion, I took an Alcohol Prep pad from my first aid kit and stuck it at the base of my bed between the sheets. That evening, the pad was in the same place I had left it. Disgusted, the next morning I marked the corner of the sheets with a pencil and tore the sheets off of the bed. That evening, the same sheets were put back on the bed. Being in the hotel for more than a week now and not having the sheets changed once disturbed me as did the lack of courtesy in leaving the air conditioner on. The Inn at Northrup Station initially caught my eye as being a unique boutique hotel nestled in a quaint and eclectic neighborhood just outside of downtown Portland, but left me feeling dirty and tense when I left. If I have a choice in a busy, overcrowded, impersonal downtown mega-hotel or Northrup, I will chose the mega-hotel because I know that my room will be cleaned and the room environment comfortable.

Wild Colors...wildest I've encountered since the sixties! The carpets in halls are like Dr. Seuss meets Timothy Leary. Quirky fixtures and art abound. Only complaints are the cooking smells in hallways (all those kitchens) and lighting. With deep avocado, grape and khaki walls, the lighting was poor to read by but fine for everything else. Also, chairs in rooms need re-covered with sturdier material (all the same style) but all in all-still a great place to stay.

Ethnic restaurants abound and the streetcar makes everywhere in PDX accessible. I hate to rec this place as it'll become too popular but hey...it was a fun place and great area of the city to explore.

Never disappointed at Inn at Northrup Station

from Caribbeanfanatic
We had another wonderful stay the first weekend of December at this great inn. We have stayed six or seven times in the last three years and haven't stayed anyplace else since discovering it. We have taken friends and family at different times and they all agree with us that the entire experience is wonderful.

Not bad, but lighting is weird!

Okay okay, I'm not here to complain a whole heck of a lot, BUT....

Yes, this hotel's website & photos on it are really cute and cool, decor looks funky, cute and cool yes---WHEN YOU FIRST WALK INTO THE MAIN LOBBY, people.. If you have not stayed at this hotel before, but have browsed their website, it draws you in and makes you want to stay at the hotel due to their colorful and fun-looking website. But when you arrive at the hotel, the actual rooms are okay, cool I guess somewhat--they do have fun colors on the bedspreads.. They do have nice marble countertops in kitchens. But for the most part, okay room. Not fabulous, baby! One other thing I must tell you that other people did not mention in their posts here--the choice of lighting they chose for the rooms are terrible! Somewhat of a dark feel. Even with all the lamps on, room was still was kind of dark and dreary looking. When they built this hotel, they should of come up with a better lighting concept for the rooms to give them more of an iviting feel, plus it would make the neat colors in the room stand out a little more. If your someone who doesn't mind rooming it up in darkness, then this is the room for you..

On another note, I'll have to agree with the people here who posted that the front desk staff girls are unpolished. Yep, indeed indeed UNPOLISHED. Not very professional looking at all. (When you look at their GREAT website, you vision nice or polished looking front desk staff) But nope!--the girl at their front desk was not very polished at all. And she just kind of sat there, like a big lump.

P.S, When reading the person who posted the problem with the toilet plunger situation: The Inn at Nothrup Station should have handled that situation in a more professional manner, or at least accomodated/comped the guest for something. What that hotel guest had to put up with was completely, and absolutely ridiculous.

ALL IN ALL, if you just want a good nights sleep or want to cook some of your own eats in the rooms kitchen with the pretty marble countertops, (or grab some of the continental breakfast in their fun looking colorful lobby area)--then it ain't THAT bad. Give it a try. CIAO.......

Great Location, But Hotel Needs Some Polish

from A TripAdvisor Member
Friends and I recently stayed here for four nights in several rooms, and while it was pleasant and had a great location we could tell that the hotel needs some TLC and some reinvestment. The rooms were funky and stylish, but they are showing their age. An armchair had several cigarette holes and tears in the upholstery, another armchair had stains, and the couches looked tired and worn out. The ironing board literally fell apart in my hands when I first tried to use it. The maid service was very stingy, and although I tipped them every day I was never given replacement bath amenities or extra soap. The lobby breakfast bar was a nice extra, but the front desk staff was unpolished and not very gracious. I wasn't expecting Four Seasons service, but the unprofesional young girls staffing the desk every day seemed to just be "playing hotel" and talking amongst themselves rather than focusing on their guests. If they could just invest some money to clean up the rooms, and train the front desk staff better, this hotel would be awesome. But as it is, the unpolished staff and the cheap management seem to let it down.
