Best Staff Ever!!

from AshburnTravelers
Based on reader surveys from this site, my wife and I stayed at the Hotel Vintage Plaza from 15-18 May 2005. The hotel and staff could not have been better. Although the Hospitality Suite did not have much of a view, the room was very large and the soaking tub was the deepest ever encountered. We were treated to a complimentary glass of wine when our room was not ready by 3:00 PM and the staff waited on us as if we were royality. The nightly wine tastings were excellent. We recommend this hotel over whelmingly.

A lovely experience

from BluemoonSanFrancisco
Spent the Memorial Day weekend at this hotel for a pretty fair rate ($135 per night). Found the staff efficient and friendly at check in. We were upgraded to an exceptional townhouse type suite once we revealed that we were members of the Kimpton Loyalty Program. The room was clean and comfortable with aveda products and Torrefazione Italia coffee to make the room even more pleasant. They have a nice variety in the honor bar and we even had a treadmill in the room (we did not avail ourselves of either). Cute robes in zebra and leopard patterns were a part of this room too. Bathroom was a little cramped in light of the gigantic suite but nothing really to compain about. We were on the side of the dreaded parking deck but far enough away from it to avoid any unpleasant views or noise. We dined downstairs at Pazzo and had a great breakfast. Food was fresh and a little rich and service was good. Checkout was uneventful.

The location was great for shopping and we walked a short walk to the train for an inexpensive and comfortabe ride to the Portland airport. We would definitely recommend a stay here and even though we like to explore hotels would stay again.

A great value

I got a fantastic price on this hotel on Priceline and enjoyed the one-night stay. The room had free wireless Internet - a huge plus for me, because I take my laptop everywhere. The clerk was super nice upon check-in and asked if my husband and I wanted a king-size bed instead of a queen. The hotel has free wine-tasting for guests before dinner and a nice little lobby with a library of books, a grand piano and comfy chairs.

The restaurant that is part of the hotel has a menu of small plates for about $3-4. We had a nice snack there with wine in the afternoon before leaving.

Two negatives kept this hotel from getting an "excellent" rating: At about 10 a.m. there was about 15 seconds of heavy stomping on the floor above, which led my super-geek husband to wonder aloud if storm troopers had overtaken the hotel. Another problem was that we had left our luggage with the front desk upon checkout, with the idea that we would return in the afternoon to pick it up after wandering around downtown Portland. When we got back, they brought me a different person's bag. They confused the claim tickets. Luckily, my bag was still in the back, though I shudder to think about what would have happened if it was not there.

ve had!

I consider myself to be well traveled, and I've stayed in my share of 5 star hotels. For the price I paid at Hotel Vintage Plaza, I was more than pleased with the service and quality of what I received. I have no idea where the few negative reviews come from. It must have been a fluke. My room was impeccably clean and very tastefully decorated- not the typical old folk's design - but nice rich colors, solid furniture, mini bar, great city view, comfortable beds, enormous bathroom, and plenty of space. They were more than happy to accommodate my 100lb 6 year old chocolate lab. Not only did they provide food bowls, treats and scoop bags, but they even walked him free of charge. NO hassle whatsoever. The doorman was extremely helpful with suggestions and directions. Check in was easy - I even recieved a coupon for $15 off my next stay - and check out was simple, too. The location was ideal and easily within walking distance to restaurants, drug stores, and coffee shops. When I got back home to Seattle, I found an email survey waiting for me - sent directly from the hotel's general manager - asking me to rate my stay. Even after saying that I wouldn't have changed a thing, I recieved a voucher in the mail good for a free night's stay within the next year! My stay at this hotel was flawless, and I don't even care to "look around" next time I need a room in Portland. I love this hotel, and they have earned my business and trust from day one. You will not be disappointed - I promise.

What a dump

If you read all of the unfavorable reviews posted prior to the writing of this one you will get a true representation of what you may experience or worse if you book a reservation here. The hotel is dirty and the staff is nasty and unprofessional.

Great room, very questionable customer service

from taramadlung
we were enchanted by the two-story "michael jordan" suite during our anniversary stay at vintage plaza. the room is spacious - two bathrooms, one has the deepest jet tub you'll ever see! they had wine and chocolates in our room for the occassion - very kind. our check in was gracious - they offered us a drink at the bar since our room wasn't quite ready.
upon returning our first night the hallway and our suite was inudated with the smell of marijuana. the suite right next to us was "having a party"? the smell in our room made me ill - we opened all the windows even though it was cold because we had to choice to try to air out the room if we were going to sleep. i called the front desk and they ubruptly told me they knew of the problem and were making those guests leave the hotel and hung up on me. strangely, he never apologized for the problem and no recompense was offered.

then the next day we pulled up front and gave our bmw to the valet. we went up to our room on the 8th floor and opened the windows. we heard our car start up (it has a very distinct sounding after-market exhaust) and speed out at a rapid rate. we ran to the window and looked out to watch the valet "rippin' it up" down the street in our car. we are a young couple, we know valets are going to play around with your car, but this was excessive. i went down and talked to the manager. he apologized and told me he would talk to the valet. great. i was satisfied at that point. later he approached me and proceeded to tell me that he consulted the valets and they denied the event. he said he has to "believe his guys" because they were a great group of guys and he had worked with them a long time. also, he claimed the windows in our suite didn't open so we couldn't have possibly heard what we claimed to have heard. (of course the windows open, how else could we get the smell out from the night before?) so he inferred that i was lying. i explained again that we witnessed the event and he refused to believe it. my husband approached him and explained again what he saw took place and explained that by taking the side of his staff over the customer he was inferring that i was lying. he then got very nervous and tried to cover his tracks. what was the point of bringing it back up with me. why not just leave it at "i'm sorry, i'll take care of it" and give a discount on the room or something and leave it at that. what ever happen to the customer being right and especially, when two of your customers witnessed the same event?

while i loved the location and room, the questionableness of the staff would make me very hesitant to recommend this hotel. ususally with a higher-end hotel you get more professional staff.

A wonderful weekend

We have just returned from a wonderful trip to Portland Oregon and a two night stay in the Vintage Hotel. This Hotel gave us the most room and best decorations for the money we have ever had. It was elegant ,clean and the reception people charming. We will go back again.

Very Romantic and Fun and Funky Starlight Room

from A TripAdvisor Member
We loved the Starlight Room but I must say that I checked "Tripadvisor" first and noticed the issues the prior guest had on their Honeymoon stay. I called and made sure we weren't opposite the parking garage a couple of days before our visit. The Hotel accomodated and I've got to tell you the staff, room, service, etc. were exceptional. We were "getting away from it all" and out for the weekend to celebrate our 5th Wedding Anniversary. The staff outdid themselves to make sure we were happy. The decor of the room was lots of fun with gold stars and fun Mod furniture. The atrium windows provided a look at the sky and stars. I had read about this place in the "10 Best Places to Kiss" years before when my husband and I were dating. So glad we tried this place. I hadn't been to Portland in over 25 years and the staff recommended great restaurants close by, great areas of town to visit within walking distance, and several other "tips" for us travelers. We definitely will return to this hotel. We only live a couple of hours away and now that kids are grown we plan to come back and stay here again and again. Give this place a try!

t leave your car with the valet!

from PandaPaws
They welcomed my border collie with dog biscuits and showed me to a pleasant 10th-floor room with a view of the Morrison Bridge. (A floor or two lower and the view would have been of the side of another building.) The room had attractive wallpapers, a very comfortable bed and pillows (I usually hate hotel pillows), and Aveda bath products. The location was within easy walking distance of restaurants and shops, but not so easy to navigate in a car (one-way streets combined with road construction made me feel almost desperate to get out of downtown). Because the room faced the inside of the block, there wasn't a lot of street noise, but there was a constant machine roar, perhaps from an air conditioning unit on the roof immediately above. The worst part of the visit, however, was definitely when we returned from dinner to learn that the valet had run my car into a wall in the parking garage, hard enough to displace the bumper and buckle the hood. A good two hours the next day was spent dealing with getting a rental car (which the hotel paid for). It's now a week later and they still haven't managed to get an appraiser out to see my car, and I'm 600 miles away worrying that they're going to declare it totaled... Word of advice if you're driving: drop your bags and then park your car yourself (a garage is about two blocks away) - cheaper and safer!

As part of our honeymoon trip my wife and I booked a Starlight room at the Vintage Plaza. The hotel is nice and its location is great, staff very friendly and attentive.
What spoiled the stay, however, was the fact that our so-called Starlight room was opposite a high-rise multi-storey car park which had a spotlight on the roof. Open the electric blinds and you are not greeted with spectacular views of the night sky, but annoying reflections from these lights opposite - forget stargazing from this aspect!
So check the room first and if the car park is opposite, don't bother, you may as well book a standard room and save your cash.
