t be noisier!

from SammySpray
Hotel 50 should not be currently opened. We arrived mid-week completely unaware that it was under renovation. This is not noted on their website, nor were we told in an email we received several days prior to our visit. In fact, you aren't even told when you arrive at the front desk! But once you ascend in the elevator, the noise greets you like a freight train or a jack hammer against your ear. Really - I do not feel it could have been louder. We were on the 4th floor. Friends were moved to the third floor and said it was the slightest bit better there. Secondly, our reserved double-occupancy had been reduced to one bed without our knowledge. Third, none of the facilities -- fitness room or even the restaurant are currently opened. Upon leaving we asked when the renovations were due to be completed. Hotel staff did not know but estimated it could be more than three or four months. Perhaps after this time I'd consider returning. The staff were nice, but some seemed unprepared. We were in town during a big conference and management scheduled a trainee to work the desk alone. Poor planning on management's behalf? Due to our inconvenience we did receive a reduced rate, which we very much appreciated (but also felt we deserved). Fortunately, construction halted on the weekend, but we were told that this is not always the case. Ultimately, I think Hotel Fifty will be a fine place to stay. It is centrally located on the waterfront in Portland and within walking distance to many restaurants, bars, etc.

DANGER: Hard hat zone

from Stacer32
NOT RECOMMENDED.

We reserved a balcony, riverview, 2 bed room - we received a partial riverview, no balcony, 1 king room w/rollaway bed, making our room wall to wall bed. When we asked about this, we were told we had the very last room available due to the renovation of the hotel, but we could take a look at what the rooms would look like when the renovation was complete - as if viewing the room I won't be staying in will make up for the disappointment I had for not receiving the room I had looked forward to for months. Not quite.

We decided to look past the room type snafu and make the most of the room we had. That didn't last very long, though. The renovation of the hotel was UNBEARABLE! Don't try and sleep in or even have a conversation in your room between 9-5... the constant jackhammering on the 5th floor will make it impossible. My little girl was on the verge of tears from the extremely loud hammering, bangs, and thuds.

If that wasn't enough, just to make life a little more pleasant, the toilet was broken and was constantly running.

This will be a family vacation to remember - don't let this happen to you! The area around Hotel 50 is great, but you should consider ANY OTHER hotel in this area instead.

Good place to stay near downtown

from SilverSpringExPat
Hotel Fifty is in the midst of a facelift. We stayed in one of the renovated rooms.

Comfortable and clean, excellent set-up for the money. Near a MAX stop.

Due to the renovations, a few things stood out. The exercise center was closed, and snack/ice/soda machines were being shifted. The hotel had about half the rooms being worked on, so fewer guests seemed to translate into smaller staff.

One thing to be aware of: few eating establishments in the area, due to the downtown business-oriented location. You will need to travel on the MAX/streetcar for most meals.

Not bad at all

from brianinc-ville
Other reviewers have been pretty much on the money about this place: it looks like a pretty generic low-midrange hotel, but many details have been upgraded. I don't think it really says "boutique," but it's better than your average Best Western.

Here's what I liked: Soft down pillows, decent bed linens, free (plug-in) internet, very friendly staff, very clean all around. The location is hard to beat -- it's about a block from the MAX train from the airport and right in the middle of downtown.

Here's what I liked less: the hot water (fifth floor, south side) never really got hot. It was warm-ish, but not what you want on a clammy, dreary Portland morning.

There was a little bit of train noise from said MAX line on the Morrison Ave. side. Didn't bother me too much, but you're not likely to get real silence. It'd probably be better on the side facing the river, but those rooms are more expensive.

For $120, it seemed pretty good. Not sure I'd want to pay much more than that.

Not Too Much Has Changed

from markinoc
I stayed here when it was the Four Points and I liked this place. I stayed here recently after the name change and it still was fine. There is some construction going on (which did not affect my stay) and a computer screen at the front desk with photos of what the place is going to look like shows what the result will be. I hope they don't change the rooms too much.

I've stayed in a lot of Portland hotels and this was one of the best places to get a room if the price was around $100/night. Comparable rooms at $50-100 cheaper than the top end places.

It's not pretty from the outside, but this place is very nice on the inside, and a cool makeover with a good bar downstairs could make this a really happening place.

What a great view and great night sleep

Nice Surpise

This is a great location, and we were very happy with our stay here. Even though the single room was on the small side, it was cozy. The fitness room is excellent. We would certainly stay there again.

A Contrived Hip Hotel

from 2RInsider
When W Hotels first came on to the scene, they were pretty revolutionary. The idea of combining "cool" with "nice hotel" hadn't really been done well before.

After The W came a slew of visionaries with cool ideas for hotels, and the idea really caught on. Portland has a few good ones itself, Hotel Jupiter comes immediately to mind.

Unfortunately, now comes Hotel Fifty (and, I assume, hundreds more just like it to follow.)

Hoping to cash in on the cash cow concept of cool boutique hotels, some MBA in a suit (OK, I'm projecting here, but you can probably picture this in your head as well...) has decided that his company needs a Cool Hotel, too, and has formed a committee to determine what those kids with their tight pants and long hair and rock and roll music are into these days.

After endless meetings, numerous compromises between marketing and legal, and the naming committee forgetting to shift its paradigms and neglecting to wordsmith their takeaways, we've created a brand-new concept in hotels:

Edgy-Bland.

And the Cutting Edge Name?

Hotel (What It Is) Fifty (Its Street Address.)

Imagine an Econolodge* redecorated by Ian Schrager on a budget of no more than $42 per room. Call me cynical, but the hotel just reeks of that poor guy from high school who just tried wayyyyy too hard to be cool. All the parts are there, but the attitude and the soul have departed the building without even leaving a note.

OK, I think I've made my point here. Some people say I occasionally go overboard.

That said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the hotel, the beds are moderately comfortable, the rooms very clean and reasonably lit. The people who complained about the noise have a point, if you're sensitive to noise, you'd best keep looking. I had no trouble with it on the fifth floor facing the river, though.

The staff is adequately friendly, though oddly looking like the staff from the Quality Inn, instead of wearing Edgy Corporate Cool uniforms. The hotel bar was purchased from Goodwill after 1984 stripped it of anything kitschy and interesting, but the beer selection is comfortingly cold. The lobby consists of a couch placed about four feet from the front of the front desk, so that you can sit and stare at the clerk, counting their nose hairs, until he or she becomes uncomfortable and goes into the back office.

My favorite quirk of the hotel is the Ice Elevator. I believe the elvator shaft is vented directly to the outside, and stepping in on a winter day subjects you to a blast of icy air blowing straight down from above. Not that I'm complaining, I've just never experienced a refrig-er-vator before.

I've pointed out a lot of negatives here, but let me reiterate, there's nothing at all wrong with the rooms or the staff, and the location is fantastic. Stay here if you can get it cheap, but please don't expect--or pay for--an actual cool boutique hotel.

* As a note of trivia, the hotel was never actually an Econolodge. It was, however, a Four Points Sheraton, which was/is Sheraton's attempt to compete with Econolodge.

s hope the new owners upgrade

from sbgantz
I reserved the 4 Points Sheraton through Priceline. Upon arriving in Portland I couldn't find the Sheraton. After driving around a bit I checked the Hotel 50 and found out it had just changed ownership and name that day! Thank goodness, the new owners had retained the Sheraton staff, and the person in charge understood the reservation system. They found and honored my Priceline reservation.

Overall this was a very positive experience. The desk staff was professional. They worked with me on selecting a room, and even upgraded me to an upper level room with a view. When we got to the room a housekeeper arrived to change the sheets, and after some investigation we did confirm that the room was not ready. They moved us immediately to a new room and provided coupons for free breakfast for our 3 day stay. They apologized profusely for the confusion. Mistakes happen, and they did a great job of making up for it.

The room was "ok". A bit generic, but comfortable and clean. I did not smell cigarette smoke, and if I had I would have informed the staff. My guess is that they would have moved me to a new room.

The view from our room was great, and we were happy we got that upgrade.

There was free internet access via an ethernet cable, which is still better than many hotels which charge for access. My friend and I also were able to connect to some wifi connections in the area which worked reasonably well. I would expect free wifi to be added soon.

We only had breakfast at the restaurant. It was OK. They had a buffet, and an a la carte menu. Nothing special.

Parking was quite convenient and only $15/day.

The location was extremely convenient, walking distance to downtown, easy drive out to the Columbia River Gorge, and short drive or maybe public transport to the outlying hip neighborhoods.

I hope the new owners have an upgrade plan. This could be an awesome boutique hotel, and I'd love to come back to check it out, even though it will certainly be more expensive.

missed opportunities for greatness

from Zanmeera
After working near this property for many years, I decided
to spend a night here with my husband. This hotel is ideally
located right across from the Willamette Riverfront, with killer
views of Mount Hood from the East side. I thought its new incarnation as Hotel Fifty would mean it had upgraded to a boutique hotel; wrong. The tiny room we were assigned, while
it had a nice view, stank of smoke, and that includes the towels in
the bath, even though it is a nonsmoking hotel now. There is no excuse for a hotel to not remediate formerly smoky rooms. Calling it nonsmoking is nonsense if you are overcome with stench; it's as bad as if someone were still actively smoking. Linens were cheap
and scratchy and the pillows lumpy and of poor quality. The outer wall was cold and drafty and the fan that operated the heater was unbelievably noisy. No wifi internet connection; inexcusable for Portland in this day and age. This location cries out for quality and modern, sustainable interiors and practices. Too bad the new management has missed these golden opportunities. It's liitle better than a motor inn off an interstate as is now.

Top Local Tips for Portland

Japanese Garden, Int'l Rose Test Garden - Portland gardens in general Go in the AM as these gardens get busy. Wow, they are beautiful. If that Japanese Garden was in my city I would be there right now. :-)

Ross downtown The Ross in downtown Portland is GREAT! Most organized Ross I have ever seen, plus jam packed with deals.

Voodoo Donuts is walking distance Voodoo Donuts opens nightly at 11PM and stays open until the last of the donuts are sold. They make really great stuff--the most creative donut shop you'll ever see in terms of flavors, product, and presentation. On weekend nights you can walk there without a thought of safety--plenty of people out. Weeknights, you can grab a cab or take a friend. The neighborhood is fine, but no matter where you are, walking alone in a strange city at night isn't that great an idea...
