This hotel's website wastes a lot of space talking about their refurbished lobby and the architectural style of the building's exterior. They totally avoid the info that would keep people away - the fact that the rooms don't have basic necessities like phones or clocks! The bathroom may have a clawfoot tub but the sink is in the room beside the bed! Ridiculously overpriced at $140 for a so-called suite. If they're so concerned with being historical, why provide a TV when there's no phone or clock radio?
Very Disappointing
from kdgree
For what it offers, this hotel is not a good value. Glowingly described as "restored" and "historic", the reality was a small, hot, dark room with no ventilation, no electrical outlets, poor TV reception, that smelled of stale smoke. Parking was a huge hassle. Management is petty and unconcerned with customer satisfaction and the overall ambiance was creepy. Unless you are primarily interested in the loud and active social scene in this block, you should avoid this hotel.
Odd but refreshing

This is not your standard hotel. The interiors look like they haven't changed in at least 50 years. The old bath/shower looked great and the well kept hotel corridors were charming.
There might few mod-cons but you do get fantastic staff, a quiet atmosphere and a top location - in hopping distance of the best bookshops, record stores and numerous interesting shops/bars.
The room was quite musty and there was some kind of smokey draught outside. Remedied by shutting the window. No air conditioning meant the fan had to be on all night - but this was an unusually hot and humid week.
This isn't really a hotel for business trips or for those who want luxury. For anyone who wants a unique stay in Portland, and enjoys a sense of history then you could do far worse than a couple of nights here.

DO NOT STAY HERE !!!!!

This place has small, musty rooms that are advertised as beautiful. They do not tell you that there are no phones or air conditioning. Instead there is a small oscillating fan in the corner, blowing around all the dust and pigoen feathers that are coming in off the adjacent roof top, through the window that has no screen on it! With in minutes of being in this room my friend started to have an asthmatic attack and had to get downstairs into the air where she could breathe before we had to call an ambulance. We obviously could not stay there and had to leave. The hotel clerk said he could not refund my credit card because I made the reservations through Expedia, he said I needed to call them. This ended up not being true. I requested to talk to the owner, but she was no where to be found, and never returned any of my phone calls. When I got home I called American Express to dispute the charges. When Amer Ex questioned Clyde Hotel about the incident, Clyde Hotel sent a letter full of lies. They said I booked two rooms but only used one room, so in "good business sense" did not charge me for two rooms (their mistake, I never booked two rooms) They said there were plenty of websites that informed people there are no phones or A/C. They also accused us of sneaking in a third person, who was simply visiting us. This place put quite a damper on our vacation. DO NOT STAY HERE, THEY ARE VERY DISHONEST.
Do not stay here!

DO NOT STAY HERE! Terrible managment. I'm usually not one to write bad reviews, but this place could care less about it's patrons. If you have the patience, here's my experience: I stayed here on a Saturday night 3 months ago while passing through Portland. I was put in a newly remodeled room that appeared great ($145). Upon returning from dinner, however, the place was literally shaking to the beat of the bar/disco below which thumped techno-rock 'til well after 2am. The on-site night clerk was unable to abate the noise nor secure another room. My roommate was literally forced to sleep in his truck outside. The next morning, the day manager refused to make any accomodation, not even give me the single-bed rate in light of my friend's departure. I filled out a written form, and was advised that my complaint would be forwarded to "the owners". Upon returning home, I disputed the charge with VISA while we worked things out. I made a number of calls to hotel to determine the position of "the owners". I was strung out for 3 months, including statements that some form of accomodation would be reached. Finally, VISA refused to hold up payment further because I did in fact "receive a room", however uninhabitable. I called hotel today and was told they would not refund any portion of my charge, claiming I was advised of the noise before I checked in (I wasn't). Clearly, they were just waiting for VISA to clear -- I assume they've done this before. Really, I wouldn't even be bothering with this, but these guys advertise themselves as a 3-star+ hotel and charge $150/nite and were so outrageously anti-guest I feel compelled to warn the world (and maybe vent just a little). THIS PLACE IS BAD NEWS AND I STRONGLY RECCOMEND YOU AVOID IT.

Beware!
from A TripAdvisor Member
The Clyde Hotel bills itself as a 3-star, historic hotel. But beware, the advertised rooms are as small as closets, the larger rooms are permeated with smoke (which they allege is from the bar across the street) AND they added an extra charge to my credit card for a second person in the room without telling me-- after they had told me it was OK. Stay someplace else.
great place, a treasure

What a true gem, it was like going back in time, artistically decorated, warm little touches everywhere, very clean. Everything is working/originol from the radiators to the elevator, this place is mint . The staff is friendly and helpful. The location is right downtown, Its a very active area, wich for us, added to the fun of staying/playing in portland. We allready want to go back here again.
Nice Stay

My wife and I stayed at The Clyde for out first anniversary, and enjoyed our stay. The Hotel staff are friendly and helpful, willing to answer questions and give directions and maps freely. Built in the early 1900's, The Clyde offers a visitor a great idea of the construction and design of hotels from that period. Fresh paint and restored detail areas were nice to see. Most contemporary hotels can't compare to the attention to detail they display at the Clyde. Everything was very clean; rooms, linen, towels, floors, etc. We stayed in the Scarlet Room, draped in red velvet with a great view of the city. Though it was winter, the provided space heater warmed things up nicely. I recommend a stay in this flash from the distant past hotel, located in a very colorful part of town, walking distance to everything, parking provided. We will return.
Be careful before you book the Clyde

A nice quiet place, centrally located, BUT no outlets in room for hairdryer, etc., no chair, no bedside lamps, sink with no plug, rabbitear television (no good reception), no telephone!! It's worth about $50.00 a night. Orbitz has this rated at 3 stars--NOT TRUE--it's a shaded 1 star.
