What am I missing?
from Tripper200607
I stayed here as it was the best rated offering in the town on TripAdvisor.
Most reviewers have been complimentary about the Shilo, but I agree with the reviewer who's opinion can be summarised as "it's just a motel...". To which I'd add "... with rather dated decor".
No real problems, but a "below average" marking as the price being charged simply wasn't justified for this style of accomodation.
The town of Bend, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise, with a very lively downtown core of Bars and Restaurants.

Beautiful Resort - Loved the Bend Shilo
from A TripAdvisor Member
The Shilo Inn in Bend, Oregon is super. Suites are beautiful and immaculate with full kitchen, gas fireplace, separate bath and dressing area with sink. Indoor and outdoor pools; some rooms are right along the river. There is a restaurant on-site and a hot, buffet breakfast is included in room price. Highly recommend.

Good Experience Here
from CathySEdmondsWA
We had a 2nd floor room (2 queen beds) in Bldg #300 which fronts the river. The room was quiet and we had no trouble with noise. The view of the river was nice. I cannot, however, recommend the restaurant at this location - we had a terrible dinner there (hopefully breakfast would be better, but we weren't willing to try).
Terrible Experience
from Birder 4206
On our trip from Texas to Central Oregon, we decided to stay at the Bend Shilo Inn for 2 nights, based on reviews I read on Trip Advisor. I called the motel directly and booked what was supposed to be a "premium suite" on the river for $122 + tax per night. It turned out to be only one large room with a balcony.
We experienced problems right from the beginning. We arrived tired and ready to relax at 4:30pm and were told our room wasn't ready, as the maid hadn't cleaned it yet. The front desk personnel told us it should be ready "shortly." We sat outside at their pool for an hour, then checked back with them. This time they said they were waiting for the housekeeping supervisor to inspect the room before we could enter it. Finally, after checking back TWO more times, we were able to get into our room at 6:15pm. The only compensation offered was two small boxes of laundry detergent.
I did use their laundry room, and it is in bad need of maintenance. Only one of the two overhead fluorescent light fixtures works, and the smoke detector emits a piercing, high-pitched sound every few seconds. This type noise could potentially damage one's hearing.
We were very disappointed with our room. It looked like it hadn't been redecorated since the 70's, there were stains in many places on the carpet (also stains all over the carpets outside the units in our section), and the bed (especially the thick, lumpy pillows) was very uncomfortable. They use 52-watt bulbs in their lamps. This causes it to be very dim in the room and impossible to read.
Upon checking out, I voiced many of these complaints to the front desk clerk; however, no compensation was offered because of our inconvenience(s). Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere when travelling to Bend.

Very nice accommodations...

We spent the night here on a traveling tour of the volcanic monuments in the area of Bend. I had read reviews on other hotels and went with the Shilo, prepared to ask for the 2nd floor. We arrived, two parties with two rooms, and check in went smoothly. However, I was traveling with my 6 year old and the room I was given was very dark and located at a stairwell and in a hallway. Not very comforting in today's world. However, my brother-in-law had a great room overlooking the courtyard pool and lots of light with a balcony and one entrance. I went to the front desk and asked to be changed; there was nothing available for my room type under the Expedia reservation. When I stated I would pay for an upgrade, they quickly made changes and put me in a fabulous suite, next to my brother-in-law for $10 more. Very well worth the visit to the front desk. The pools are great, the property is well-maintained and I added this to a "will come back" list for the future. Our visit in Bend was really enjoyable, thanks to the Shilo Inn.
Nice location

Very nice property right on the Deschutes River, but definitely a chain hotel kind of place. We had a junior suite - 2 queens and a sofa sleeper. Room was clean and very spacious. Would have preferred to be on the first floor as balconies on the second floor have railings that obstruct your view of the river. Nice place for families, but if we didn't have kids we would have preferred to stay at McMenamins downtown.
Dirty, far from city center, on busy road
from searchenginecloaker
This rundown motel (hardly a hotel) is overpriced, on a very busy road next to a stripmall, and dirty (cigarette burn holes in a non-smoking room's carpet). The only good thing it offered is the running joke among my family when we encounter other bad hotels... "at least it isn't as bad as Shilo Inn in Bend!"

My wife and I booked a non-smoking courtyard room with a king-size bed.
We usually stay at the Phoenix Inn, but saw the good reviews and decdided tot stay at the Shilo Inn. When we arrived, we were placed in a first floor room with the housekeeper's supply closet just outside of the only window. The room was TINY and it was so dark, we thought it was nighttime, when in fact, it was 2 p.m. We immediately went to the front desk to complain and they told us "that's what you get when you book with Expedia." They said we could get another room with more light and space for $20 more per night. We reluctantly agreed and forked out the cash for the larger room (equipped with a kitchenette) on the second floor. It was very nice, but whenever you used your hairdryer, the circuit would blow out all of the lights in the room. What a joke! The first night we spent there was fine. Then, on our second night there were three gentlemen in the room above us that walked about the room like a herd of water buffalo. The ceilings were so thin that any noise upstairs sounds incredibly loud. the floors squeak and creak. Needless to say trying to get any sleep was extremely difficult because they were at it from 9pm-11pm and again from 3:45 am-8:30am. We again complained to the front desk and requested to be moved to the top floor so that we would not hear all the racket from the room above us. We had to move AGAIN to a top floor room which, too, was very nice and QUIET!!! The manager agreed to split the difference of the extra $20 per night that they charged us and apologized for all of the inconvenience. Do yourselves a favor and if you MUST stay here, be sure to get what you pay for when you reserve your room. Also, make sure it's on the top floor. Save yourself the trouble and book somewhere else!

Our favorite hotel to stay at
from A TripAdvisor Member
First I would like to say, that in all my travels, this is one of my favorite Hotel to stay at. The quiet peaceful setting gives one the feeling of seclusion, and yet this resort hotel is conveniently located near shops, golfing, skiing and downtown Bend. The staff is very helpful and friendly, and the rooms are beautiful.
The television reception is terrible, a suggestion from a loyal guest would be, to provide cable for your hotel guests. There have been important TV specials I have had to miss due to the poor reception. This is just for your information, as I will continue to frequent your hotel. Thank You.

Things we liked in Bend We rented a canoe from Alder Creek Kayak and took it out on the river - they were very friendly and helpful and it's a fun thing to do. We also enjoyed the crepe restaurant and coffee shop right on Wall St. downtown for breakfast. Children's Museum was a huge hit as was the High Desert Museum.
canoeing Canoe the Deshutes river it a great time
bring your bikes and rafts the river is everywhere. trails for riding and river for rafting!
