Loved Great Bear Lodge

from robd
We went to Great Bear Lodge with our two children, 11 and 8 and all of us had a great time. The facility was clean, the waterpark lots of fun and the staff very friendly. Only complaints were the price which seemed rather high and the fact that the water park didn't open until 9 while checkout was at 11. They told us that we could stay in the waterpark after checking out and use the changing facilities but that seemed impractical in the winter so keep this in mind as you plan your stay. We stayed over one night and the kids probably would have enjoyed another few hours in the water.

It was ok BUT?

from A TripAdvisor Member
Well started in the lobby and our room wasn't clean yet that was ok. We were greeted by another hostile patron. Which I feel the front desk clerk should of called the police. So we went to get started on the slides. They provide nice warm towels. Well, the food was yuck. And very expensive. I just thought for the price you have to stay there can they get it together alittle better? The area in the bathroom alittle dirty. And one elevator going down and up. Bad planning. You have to fight the crowds. And let me tell you they were not friendly. The room was dirty. It wasn't the maids fault. I just think It was time to steam clean those carpets. "Old feet smell" I just wanted to die. And no continental breakfest. We went to splash lagoon the next month and were much happier. And there was a bigger area for the small guys.

Blood stains on sheet !

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family and I stayed at the Lodge having heard good reviews, however that was not our case. The employees treated us like cattle hearding us into 45min check in lines at the front desk. Try that with two small children. By the time we actually spoke to someone we were hastily given room keys a large map and nothing else. The room was neat and clean looking. We found socks and underwear inside the pullout sofa and there were bloodstains along with a band aid in one of the beds. I promptly called the front desk who sent up the house keepers. They explained that if the bed is already made when they come to clean a room some maids won't change the sheets. Which is probably what happened. YUCK! Well we went on to the water park where we played for a few hours. The chlorine smell is almost unbearable. We heard several employees cursing and saying inappropiate things in ear shots of our two small children. (At the gift shop and waterpark) When we went ino the buckhorn gift shop we bought souviners. I pointed out to "Jess", a worker, that there was a broken statue on display. She removed it. I returned later that evening and saw her gluing the statue back together. It was on the shelf again the next day with an obvious crack. To me the Great Bear Lodge is more like a large Corporation rather than a family friendly resort. They are more worried about making a buck then caring for quality. We over paid for a room that was comparable to any holiday Inn and the environment was that of a busy bus station. Needless to say we will never return. I asked to speak to Jeff Lococo, the manager, however he was busy and I was told he would contact me within the week. I'm still waiting! I engourage people to visit the lodge if you are considering staying. You will easily spend $600.00 on a terrible weekend.

Great Bear Lodge During the August Blackout

from A TripAdvisor Member
Every year we take our grandchildern away for a back to school get
away. Last August we chose Great Bear Lodge. We had just arrived,
changed our clothing and was enjoying the waterslides when the power
went off. It didn't take long to learn that it wasn't just the lodge
but a major blackout in several states and Canada.

Management and staff came to the aid of their guest. Snacks and a
variety of drinks were provided free of charge to their guest.

Overall, Food was excellent, rooms very clean and all the staff helpful
and courteous.

Thanks to the management and staff what could have been a disastrous get away turned out to be a very memorable and enjoyable stay.

We are even considering a revist in March. Hope we don't get caught in
a snow blizzard.

Need repairs!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Nice place, but it seems as tough they never have time or money to repair the valves in the waterpark! Many things were broken! We won't go back until Great Bear fixes their broken valves in the water park.

Loved the Great Bear Lodge

from A TripAdvisor Member
My children and I loved the Great Bear Lodge. There was so much to do , it could have been a vacation in it's self. The kids were thrilled with the pool's and the arcade. There were other things going on there too, but we just didn't have time to do it all. There were also things for the adults like the adult only hot tub. And the rooms were awesome. There are two restaurants in the hotel that served good food and added to the convienence. This was a very family oriented hotel and we would go there again. But we will probably wait for a good deal. There were no deals when we went and it was very pricey. The hotel is also very close to Cedar Point. (Within 10 minutes if you go the right way).

everybody got sick

from A TripAdvisor Member
WE went there last year at hlodiay time, and every single one of us got very ill with vomiting and other things. We called, and they told us an employee had been sent home for a similar illness earlier ad that other guests had complained. We made a report to the group that monitors amusement parks, parks and recreation. (It is not the health dept.) I would advise anyone who thinks that they develop similar problems to at least report them.

Took 2 grandkids on a preview trip......

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have planned a trip there for 7 grandchildren and parents for a holiday present Dec. 28th, 29th. We decided to preview. I took 2 kids ages 10 and 11. We were impressed first by the facility--marvelous.
Then the personnel were so friendly and helpful. They cheerily answered the kids" questions and mine. I have never seen such a helpful staff.
We ate the food to see if we'd want to eat there. I relished the pulled pork in a crock. And I'm particular about mine. The granddaughter said she'd stop whining about going to fast food since the chicken strips were the best ever. (They did like my chips over the fries) YES we are going to eat there! Exercise room meets our medical needs. Auntie will be in a wheel chair and that will be accomodated. Cleanliness abounded and we checked everywhere but individual rooms. The preview gets an Aplus and we look forward to the trip. Happy holidays

Maintenance lax

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have viseted the park once each year since it opened. (about four years ago?) While the water park is still a good experience, maintenance of the fort has been poor. Many of the valves in the water fort have been rendered inoperable and have not been repaired. It gets worse each time I've visited. Also, seems to me that they have lowered the temperature inside the water park building. It may be a bit chilly for the older folk.

Fantastic family getaway

from gotanywine
This is a family resort, and in those terms it is fantastic. Every detail supports the Northern lodge theme very well, reminiscent of Disney. The service was in every respect prompt and courteous. The facility was opened February 2000, but our room was spotless, flawless, quiet and comfortable; we stayed in the basic family suite and it suited the five of us very well. Usually waterparks and arcades suffer from lack of maintenance, but everything worked perfectly. Sure, like any family facility the food isn't the best but we didn't expect gourmet restaurants, and our children were very happy with their meals.
Overall, this is great value for a weekend getaway. We would wholeheartedly recommend Great Bear to our friends, and are planning to return ourselves.
