Beautiful with a few things overlooked

from Laura
We just returned from an overnight stay at the Hyatt on Capitol Square in Columbus. I can see why guests rate it fairly high on the hotels.com website as it is beautiful - the lobby is elegant and very clean, the 2nd floor restaurant has a beautiful view and seating even around a waterfountain. We booked a standard room with king size bed. The room was smaller than expected in comparison to other hotels we have stayed at for less price. However being downtown Columbus that may make sense for the higher price due to the great location. There were a few issues with our room: first thing was that the entry light did not work - since we checked in after 10 pm, we had to fumble around for quite a while with the door open to let the hall light in until we finally located a lamp near the bed that worked. Second the bathroom shower did not work well. Once we got the shower working, we found it to be dangerous as the control was mixed up (the red that indicated hot was cold and vs/vs). Plus the slightest tap on the knob changed the temperature drastically - I actually scalded my hands - the water was so hot when I had turned it to the cold setting that I found it unsafe. It was also annoying that the emergency exit located right outside our room was going out so the sign was blinking like the lights in a haunted house. The good points of the room was that the view was very nice and we found the temperature of the room just right with the controls responding well if we wanted a change. The staff was friendly and had a lot of courtesy. Service in the sports bar was slow but the food was good. The server in the restaruant quoted us the breakfast buffet as $9.95 per person and then the waitress said it was $15.00 - quite a difference! Valet parking is also pricey at $21.00 for overnight - so park your vehicle yourself. Overall, we'd still visit this hotel again for the location and beauty it offers. Just be prepared for some glitches along the way...

Great Location, Great Hotel

from Rindyross
The staff at the Hyatt could not have been nicer. The location was excellent, right In the heart of everything.
The hotel is attached to a mall for shopping convience. It's a great stay and the prices are very reasonable for the quality you are getting.

OK hotel, good location

from bsktgrvy
We stayed at the Hyatt on Capitol Square for a wedding over the weekend. Since it was a Hyatt, I expected a nicer room than what we had. It was clean, the bathroom was nice, and the beds were nice, but it was a small room and the decor was less than I expected for a hotel of this type in a downtown location.

We had a wedding reception rate of $99 which made it affordable, but I have stayed in plenty of $50 a night hotels with better rooms.

A big plus for this hotel is direct access to the City Center Mall and the City Center parking garage (which only cost me $2 for overnight parking).

ve stayed in better, but was OK considering...

I have stayed in better hotels, but considering we only paid $60 on priceline, it was fine. I did notice brown stains on the sheers. I will say we were on the 11th floor at the very end in the corner. The ceiling tiles were dingy. The decor was depressing. Even in our room (which was huge) the browns and tans with a little blue in the carpeting made the room seem very dark.

Bright spots.
1) The staff was very accommodating. Remembered our names and was always asking how things were going. Even when the maid didn't leave but 1 washcloth (which I think was because my husband didn't tell her any better), after she was called, she brought me 4 wash cloths. All the towels were very soft and comfortable.

2) The bed was absolutely, positively amazing!!! I told my husband I wanted to take that bed home.

3) Great hot water in the very large bathroom.

Would I stay here again? Yes,, but only if I got the room for $60 on priceline again. If I had to pay anymore, I would look for the Hyatt Regency or the Renaissance Marriott.

Okay experience

My partner and I stayed two nights at this location. Upon check in we were not given the room that we had booked. The AC was "not turned over from heat" so the room was very stuffy and warm. There was a leak in the bathtub so it dripped continuously and other annoying disturbances. However, after talking to the manager the next morning, we were upgraded to the "Regency Crown floor". The AC was working fine in that room, go figure. The management did send a fruit basket and apologies.

Great Hotel

This hotel was very nice, the king bedroom I stayed in was very comfortable. The bed was amazing, nice sheets. I was hoping for a larger bathtub but the bathroom was large and the shower curtain was not sticking to my body while i bathed, always a good thing. The staff was very friendly, they were always helpful when we needed something. The view was nice. The only downfall was the parking, no validation for parking in nearby lots, which is common in downtown areas. Great hotel overall.

Good Hotel, Nice Bar, Expensive Brunch

from bellaamericana
I stayed at the Hyatt over New Year's weekend for one night. The staff was nice, the room was clean and very large, and the ammenities were very good.

I was checked in by friendly personnel while my husband parked the car ($3/day self-park, but you walk a block to get there. It's too far to carry heavy bags, so drop them off first). The hotel is connected to a mall, which was quite convenient.

We spent some time in the 2nd floor bar. There is also an Irish pub on the first floor, but we didn't explore that. The staff at the restaurant/bar was very accommodating, friendly, and the service was very fast.

Upsides: The workout room is fantastic - it overlooks Capitol Square and the machines are new. Great location if you need to be downtown.

Downsides: The heater in our room was very loud, and the TV volume was controlled so that it was too low. We couldn't hear the TV with the heat on! The brunch was very nice, but cost $35/person. I'm sure I didn't eat $35 worth of food. The walls were also a bit thin. A neighbor coughing loudly could be heard through the wall.

Overall, a nice stay. I would recommend checking the Hyatt website for the best rates.

Always Accomodating!

Good location.....We have stayed here a number of times in the past year and I have always found the staff courteous and helpful. The rooms are always immaculate and the few problems that have arisen, have always been taken care of promptly and to our complete satisfaction. The restaurant is above average and extremely pleasant.

Hotel OK- good restaurant

the hotel was okay, however, there was a funky smell in the entire hotel. maybe it was the cleaner they use. parking not so good. we parked across the street in a lot for $5. got the room online for $60.

The Plaza restaurant for Sunday Brunch was excellent.

Great View ... Great location ... Great Service

Top Local Tips for Columbus

Columbus doesn't have a very urban feel or buzz, but fan can be found. Columbus isn't a very dynamic city, but there are a few "don't miss" areas to explore such as the Short North area near the convention center which is very urban and NYC or Chicago-like, German Village, and beyond downtown, Easton Town Center (I HATE malls, but this one is great!).

Unadvertised specials We just happened to fall into a special getaway weekend deal. - Dumb luck. The gentlemant at the Hyatt told us about it. Next time I will know - call ahead and ask- "do you have any unadvertised specials for that time period?

Easton Mall Easton Mall is great and only about 25-30 minutes from downtown. We also went to North Market which is Columbus' City Market. Be sure to take a chance and tast Jeni's ice cream. Very different but most of the flavors are really good. Try them, she'll be happy to give you a sample.
