Very Nice, Boutique Hotel

We enjoyed our stay at the Wyndham Playhouse Square in Cleveland. It seems like a boutique hotel you may find in New York or Washington DC. Only had breakfast at the hotel and they had a good quality buffet for $12.95 which is high but expected. On a weekday this is probably a busy area but on a weekend is desolate. Definately plenty of homeless people in Cleveland. We had some college kids partying next door and at midnight called the front desk and withing 10 minutes things were quiet the rest of the night. Convenient to theaters, we saw a play at the Palace. The hotel has no business center but there is a very pleasant restaurant and business center around the corner on Huron St. Pool is in the basement, looks smaller in person than in the pictures but looks very nice. Valet parking is $22 and the service was very good. Cleveland is a pretty town with a lot a character, but slightly depressed on weekends.

A one-star that really earned it

I've sometimes read 1-star Tripadvisor reviews and thought that the reviewer must have been having a bad day. Well, the Wyndham Cleveland really was that bad! On check in, one bed appeared "pre-used", had to be remade by my wife, and a large hair was on the toilet tank. The toilet seat wouldn't stay up--the last time this happened to me was in a Motel 6 many years ago. Next day, there was no maid service at all. It took four tries on the part of the desk clerk to find a clean replacement room similar to the original, although they were at least civil. No bellhops in evidence at the door and once the valet staff was absent when we returned the car. There was seemingly nobody in the hotel at all on a weekend, the staffing was shoestring, and what was left was totally demoralized. Maybe weekday business travellers would have better luck than we had.

Great View

We stayed at the Wyndham Cleveland during the Thanksgiving holiday and was pleased with our overall service. The By Request membership is worth joining as it is free and only takes a few minutes to sign up.

We were upgraded to a coner room with a great view and plenty of room. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever been in and the staff was very helpful.

Our room included a small television and the shower was tedious with trouble draining the water. OUr stay was disrupted by other guests but the Wyndham staff was quick to compensate us for our complaints.

We will stay at the Wyndham again and we look forward to the view....

i am a former line cook at the WYndam at Playhouse square. It really is a wonderful hotel. The rooms are always nicely prepsared, and the staff always curdious. In particular the night secutiry gusrd Ben, a really nice guy whos there to help you in any way he can. The resteraunt is great, food prepared well with a curdious wait staff. One of the best kitchens i ever worked in. A great stay, close to all the attractions of cleveland.

Great for Business Travel

Just returned from a business trip to Cleveland which required me to stay near the US Bank Center. The Wyndham is across the street so it won my business. I stayed there for two nights, 11/14 - 11/16/2005.

I am glad I did. The front desk staff was efficent and very friendly. Upon my checking out, they immediately wished me a Happy Birthday. (Computers, is there anything they do not know?) Being a By Request Member is a smart move. I had my cookies and Sam Adams waiting for me at check in. The bed was very comfortable. Other reviews had stated that the rooms are a little small. Normally, I would disagree, especially when on business and its just me, but the one desk in the room had the platter with the Beer and cookies, so I had a difficult time making room for my laptop and files. Other than that minor inconvience, they had free high speed internet (and wireless too) for By Request members.

Other reviews have also mentioned that the area can be a little dead at night. I agree. Its a short walk to restaurants, but since the area is so dead, you might fear for your safety a bit (homeless people requested money at least twice on my walks to and from nearby restaurants). If you are not used to city dwelling, I recommend that you do not walk alone at night by yourself. I noticed that the hotel also had this safety information in their booklet and on the "Hotel Channel" in my room.

In sum, it was very close to where I needed to be, the "extras" were excellent, the bed was comfy, and it was near other places to eat. Great hotel for business travel.

Nice stay and really enjoyed the city

We enjoyed our stay at the Wyndham Cleveland. The room was nice with a very comforable bed and a nice view of Playhouse Square. The staff was friendly and helpful and provided much good advice on what to see and do in Cleveland--this was important since it was our first visit. We had several good meals at the hotel restaurant. My wife loves the theater and she absolutely fell in love with Playhouse Square Center across the street--a cluster of 5 beautifully restored old theaters. We attended several shows there.

The hotel is away from the center of downtown Cleveland, so other sights like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are a bit of a walk or a short cab ride away. We don't mind walking, and enjoyed all the old architecture (that we don't have in San Diego) along the way. Typical of business districts in other cities, parts of downtown Cleveland were pretty quiet at night. Other areas, however, were positively hopping even on weeknights: check out the evening action in the Flats, Warehouse District, or around the House of Blues near East 4th St. [We had a great time with the weekday "after-work" martini crowd at Pickwick and Frolic on East 4th.] We think Cleveland is vastly underrated and look forward to another visit next year!

Good value and location

Decent value and good location make this a good choice. I went to see the Indians and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Jacobs Field is about 7 blocks or about a 10 minute walk, and the R and R Hall is only a mile away. Right next to it is the Great Lakes Science Center, which is good for the kids. Rooms are ok, skip the hotel restaurant, and there isn't much else going on in the area. The valet parking went from 20 to 22 a night while we were there, which is a little steep in my opinion, but it is tough getting street parking. Other than that, no complaints.

Service was awful

We stayed one night at the Wyndham for a bachelorette party downtown. I valet parked my car and had four overnight bags (for everyone in our room). The first bellman was chatting up a couple of women and ignored me as I struggled to get by with my bags. I am a By Request member, but was disappointed at check-in when there was only one agent at the desk (despite the hotel being at full capacity). The "express check-in" did not exist, and I waited about 10 minutes for the clerk to assist the party ahead of us. When she finished with them, she walked away from the desk--she didn't even say hello or that she'd be back! When she returned and completed my check-in, she directed me to the elevators. She didn't offer bell service, so I picked up all the bags and headed towards the elevator. A second bellman came out with an empty cart, looked right at me and walked past. Since one must use her room key to use the elevator, I was frustrated that I did not have assistance.

The room was nice, except a double is two double beds, not queen-sized. It was definitely snug sleeping that night. My By Request preferences were met (extra pillows and towels, bottled water and a small bottle of wine, cheese/crackers), which was very nice.

This hotel is not located in the heart of the city, so taxi service was required to get us to the flats and warehouse district. The rooms were nice, but given the service and location, I'd only stay here again if the other hotels in Cleveland were sold out. Cleveland has had a hotel boom in recent years, and there are a lot of nice places from which to choose.

Great Room

Great Room at the whyndam... By suggestion of this site, became a BY REQUEST member and got an upgraded room, no charge. We got a King Corner Room for 125.00 a night. Nice sitting area in the room too... Bed was soft, good if you like soft beds (I don't). One thing, there is a valet charge of around 20.00 per day... They were nice to our vehicle.
I would stay there again.

Top Local Tips for Cleveland

Is a Rental Car Necessary for a Downtown Cleveland Stay? We were debating renting a car for a 3-day stay to see the RRHF. From other Trip Advisor forum members' advice, we decided not to rent the car but choose cabs instead. That turned out to be a brilliant decision. We would have paid expensive valet parking and then paid regularly to park at every place we were going. Cabs were easy to come by and the free trolley around town made it oh so much cheaper to not rent a car. It probably cost us half as much to take cabs instead of the rental.

Good Restaurants Blue Point Grille - seafood; Sushi Rocks - great sushi, hip, club-type atmosphere, Metropolitan Cafe-eclectic; Lola's - fresh, local ingredients - fantastic atmosphere, good date locale.

Walk and take the RTA Cleveland is an easy walking city. It's set up in a grid pattern so walk instead of renting a car and paying for expensive parking. You can also take the RTA to/from the airport and buses around the city. There is also a "Smile and Ride Free" bus that is free to ride, just smile at the driver. Just ask at Tower City if you need to go somewhere but don't know how to get there. The Zoo is outside of downtown but you can get there.
