Historical Traveller Reviews of Crowne Plaza Hotel City Centre
Crowne Plaza was very pleasant
My husband, teen daughter and I stayed at the Crowne Plaza for one night having obtained this hotel on Priceline. We arrived around 5pm and without any wait, were given a double non-smoking on the 12th floor. Front desk staff were extremely pleasant. The room was quite nice, fairly spacious, obviously recently renovated with very pleasant beds (but they were only doubles not queens) and bedding. The bathroom had also been renovated with marble floors and very nice countertop. However, they did not renovate the plumbing (there was quite a leak coming from somewhere amongst our shower piping), there was quite a bit of black caulking around the tub and the air vent into the room had a black caked substance on it.
Aside from those problems which I'm sure some would consider major, we really enjoyed our stay. The room was fairly quiet although we could hear plumbing from other rooms. We had a fairly nice view of the lake.
We've now stayed at three different comparable hotels in downtown Cleveland: the Embassy Suites, the Hyatt and the Crowne Plaza. The Hyatt is by far in the best condition of the three with the Crowne Plaza coming in a strong second. The Embassy Suites is old and fairly worn but still acceptable.
In/out parking is $15/day which is very reasonable for this location.
Great Location and Courteous Staff
We stayed here on a Sunday night and didn't experience any of the discourteous service, long lines or late check-in that others commented on. We were the only ones at the registration desk and were able to check in early (about 1 p.m.). The staff were very courteous and helpful with directions. We stayed on the 13th floor with a beautiful, unobstructed view of the lake, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Science Center. The room was obviously newly remodeled, with a king four poster bed, leather settee and large bathroom. The bed was soooo comfortable!
We spent several hours at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which was within walking distance, and is well worth the visit. The hotel staff recommended the warehouse district for dinner, which is also just a short walk away. They were having a street festival that day, so there were lots of vendors and live music. We ate outside at a restaurant called the Metropolitan, which was reasonably priced and great for people watching. Although we had a rental car, we didn't take it out of the garage because you could walk everywhere, which we prefer in any city.
Regarding the complaints about the air-conditioning, we learned the secret from the engineer (although it would be helpful if the front desk staff explained it upon check-in). There is a sensor, which automatically lowers the temp when you leave the room. If you wave your hand in front of it upon your return, the room cools off.
I'm glad I didn't see the negative comments before we stayed in Cleveland or we would have missed the opportunity to stay at this hotel. For the location, accommodations and price (we received a discount at the Burke airport), it can't be beat!
Beautiful View of the Lake!
We arrived at the hotel at 2 p.m. but were told that check-in was not until 3. We came back around 3:15 and could not believe the wait! I counted over 35 people ahead of me to check-in. I was a bit ticked that I had to wait after being there just an hour earlier. There was no a/c in the lobby so we just stood there sweltering. After about 45 minutes waiting to check-in the hotel staff brought out bottled water and cracker jacks. I was given a room with a double bed but said that I would prefer a room with a king size bed, non-smoking, in a higher floor, lake-view. My request was granted with no questions! Everything from that point on was great. We had a room on floor 20 and the view was amazing. The room itself was so nice. I couldn't believe how nice it was since the price was not very expensive. The king sized bed was huge (california king perhaps?) and oh so comfy. The bathroom was a nice size and we loved the leather loveseat in the room. With the coffee table it made it seem like we had an entirely different area to relax. I sat there and read while my son played video games from the bed. I think the hotel staff deserves 4 stars. it's the kind of service you expect from a 4 star hotel. I have to agree with another reviewer who wrote about the temp of the room. I had the a/c down to 65 and it never did get very cold in the room. We stayed there three nights and would definitely stay there again. The parking garage does fill up and that is a pain. The last night we could not park there but since it was a weekend we parked on the side street and saved the $15 daily parking fee. You really can walk to most places downtown (baseball stadium is more like a mile - not the 5 or 6 blocks the staff mentioned - but still not a bad walk). All in all, this place is a nice hotel. The room and staff make up for any minuses. They really do need to add more staff during the 3:00 check-in time.
They do have a buffet breakfast which is not too expensive ($8.50 but does not include a beverage). My son was able to order pancakes and chocolate milk for less than $4. There are a lot of things to choose from.
What a Great Deal!!
We got a great deal on this hotel on Hotwire ($55 per night). We stayed here in both May and August and had excellent service on both trips. Both times, we had a king size room with a picture window overlooking Lake Erie, the Browns Stadium, Science Center and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For those who said there was nowhere to go to eat, this hotel is within easy walking distance of both the Gateway and Warehouse Districts which are full of fabulous restaurants, nightclubs and entertainment. Every restaurant we tried was awesome. We had a blast. One trip was just husband and wife, other had 11 year old nephew in tow, never had to get the car out of the parking garage. This hotel is renovating, so expect a few bugs, but all of the staff was extremely helpful and accommodating. Front desk staff goes above and beyond to give you directions and tips on where to eat, etc. They've already converted to "heavenly beds" that come with a sleeping mask, lavender scented spray for your sheets and the mattresses are fabulous. I can't say enough about what a great deal this is. The rooms are clean and the housekeeping staff is very friendly and helpful. Also, free relaxation CD on the bed when you check into your room. This is a fun getaway. Easy walk to see the Indians at Jacobs Field or the Cavs at Gund arena. We'll definitely go back for trip #3!
Great bargain but definitely room for error

we took a 3 day trip to cleveland from chicago and booked this hotel through hotwire for about $50 a night - i was nervous after reading the reviews on trip advisor. i requested a room on floors 9 through 15 (the renovated floors) and my request was granted.
we had a very pleasant stay in the hotel - parking was convenient - elevator service was occasionally a bit slow. great location - we walked to everything. tub drain was slow in bathtub.
i read on the reviews about the walls being thin and BOY THEY ARE!!! this didn't cause us any problems at all but i could see that it really could if you had loud neighbors.
we had a great stay and felt like we got a real bargain. that said, we could definitely see where you could have a not so great stay at this hotel.
This hotel is in a great location for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and other lakefront attractions, and the room we had was fine, but yikes, the place is a menace. First my child and I were trapped in the malfunctioning garage elevator, and the emergency phone only delivered static and recorded messages. A kind person outside on the next floor heard us shouting and went for help. After we were rescued, and made our way to the front of the very long check in line, the desk clerk seemed mildly entertained by our elevator trouble, but not the least bit apologetic or concerned. Next, neither we nor anyone else we encountered had any hot water for most of our second day there. We had breakfast in the hotel dining room twice; both days the dark crimson table cloths had food stains from previous diners. Finally, when we wanted to check out, the normally long wait for the hotel elevator got so long, like 20 minutes, that we took the stairs down from the 10th floor. From floor 8 to 6 there was something greasy and wet on the stairs and we nearly slipped and crashed on the concrete with our luggage. I was peeved by the time we made it to the front of the, long again, checkout line. I heard people in front of me making similar complaints. I listed my grievances to the clerk, who merely informed me that the hotel does have 4 working elevators. Grrrr.
Surprised and Happy
I booked this hotel at a reduced rate and was concerned about whether I would be happy after reading the reviews of prior guests. Boy, was I surprised. The room was beautiful and quite comfortable. The hotel is under renovation so the hallways are not that great and some parts are still "old." But my room was elegant with superior linens and wood poster beds. I recommend this hotel and wouldn't be surprised if in a few months as the rest of the hotel is renovated, others will too.
t stay here.

My husband was running the Cleveland Marathon and this hotel was close to the start and finish and we got a good price. We arrived a little after 10am, we knew the room would not be ready, but it would be by two. We came back at 3pm, which is check in time, there were five people in line and one person working the desk and the phone. It took us 1/2 hour to get our room and it was not the room that we were scheduled for earlier, that room was not ready yet 5 hours later. When we got to the room the air did not work. I called the front desk and she said they would call the engineerer, but I said that I wanted another room, she then hung up. My husband called and got someone else and he said come back to the lobby and I will move you. They put us in a suite. We did not need that much room. The living area had no air, but the bedroom did, which is what we needed. The pipes in the wall made noises ALL night and the walls are so paper thin that you can actually hear word for word conversations that people were having in the room next door as if they were in your room. The people next to us strolled in at 3am making much noise. My husband had to be at the maration start by 7am, with hardly any sleep. I told the manager of our disappointment and after awhile he gave us 25% of, but this hardly makes up for all the noise in the hotel. I would never stay at this hotel again, I like to get a good night sleep.
Clean, but not a typical Sheraton
from A TripAdvisor Member
Hotel staff was helpful, room was clean, and bed was very comfy. However, it's not a "typical" Sheraton due to it's age (needs renovation) and the "restaurant" was less than desirable (located in the basement). Location of hotel is close to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Browns Stadium.
Very nice hotel

My wife and I stayed here in August 2004 when we were in town for an Indians game. The hotel was very nice. Our room was very large, clean, and had 1 of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. The location was perfect as well, with good parking on site. I would definitely stay here again.
Top Local Tips for Cleveland
Good food and great live music.
If you're in Cleveland on a weekend, check out Fat Blue Fish. The $5.00 cover charge for the live music was a bargain and the food was inexpensive and delicious!
Chieck it out if you're interested in theatre. Accomodates about 500 patrons, so every seat will be a good one.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
If you're a music fan, this place is not to be missed. Tremendous exhibits on everything from early roots to modern day....something for everybody. Allow a full day, there is a lot to see and do. Dining in the Warehouse District which is within walking distance is very good, lots of choices, and quality restaurants.
