Top Local Tips for Jamestown
Frontier Village is main tourist attraction Frontier Village is the main attraction in Jamestown. There are relocated preserved buildings along a short street. The preserved buildings are much smaller and less impressive than those found in Fargo or Minot. They are of more interest to adults with small children than to adults who want a real feel for history. There is a pony ride for children. The ponies walk in a circle on a large turnstyle. There is a short stagecoach ride, also geared to children. After September, the buildings are locked, and the rides are suspended, but tourists may still walk among the buildings. Next to Frontier Village is a buffalo preserve with several adults and calves wandering a meadow of about 250 acres. One adult and two calves are white albinos. There is also a National Buffalo Museum dedicated to the historic role of buffalo herds. It has a gift shop.
Buffalo City Grill for fine dining Buffalo City Grill is in downtown Jamestown, North Dakota. Located in a brick building with large windows, it offers a view of cargo trains speeding past. The furnishings are dark wood, and the tables and booths are spread apart from each other. The atmosphere is elegant with servers wearing ties and white shirts. There are about 6 or seven selections of steak with some chicken and seafood selections. There is a sandwich menu. Alcohol is served. (The bartender had to look up Black Russian before fixing it.) I had a wonderful steak one evening and the best beer-battered shrimp of my life the next night. My salads were large with generous portions of cucumber, tomato, and croutons. The service staff were very friendly.
Babb's Coffee House is suited to young laptop computer users Babb's Coffee House in downtown Jamestown, North Dakota, promises "a taste of Seattle." My wife and I visited it before choosing Buffalo City Grill, instead. Babb's is a spacious coffee house - not coffee shop - with tables occupied by intent college-age people typing on laptop computers. There are several tables, couches, and arm chairs. There is a wide menu of specialty coffees, cheesecake and other desserts, and cold sandwiches. There are paper menues for people confused by wall-posted menues. I wanted to stay, but my wife felt that the sandwiches were "sprout sandwiches." Most are on multigrain bread or foccocia bread, instead of her preferred white bread.
