Very adequate, great beach, helpful staff

Shell Island Resort was a great place for a family vacation. The rooms we booked were obviously among those that have been remodeled. They are NOT big...saying that 4 to 6 people can share is definitely an overstatement but they are fine for 2 or 3 people each. The bath and half bath are next to each other so privacy is an issue if you are not with your own family. However, the bathrooms were very nice and the living room/kitchen while somewhat small was adequate with a microwave, a few burners, small frig, etc. The beach was beautiful and right out the front door. The water was clean and nice and walking the beach was great! The waves were fun to play in and the sand was nice and clean. We found nice restaurants nearby for dinners and enjoyed making our own breakfasts and lunches. The staff were very helpful with unloading our bags and groceries on arrival, the parking lot was always attended and easy to get in and out, the desk staff were good with suggestions and overall made our stay very pleasant. Not a 5 star hotel but a very nice vacation hotel on a very nice beach!

My wife and I spent one night at the Shell Island Resort, I'm not sure if the room we stayed in was newly renovated or not but I personally was pleasantly suprised. The view from the balcony was awesome!

I felt the rooms were very clean, definitely not the newest however. The placement of the bedroom is odd, they do have the bedroom closest to the hallway and even though we never heard any rowdy neighbors, I can see how that would be a problem.

Also, I would have to agree that the staff at the front desk are very young and were not incredibly friendly.

The beach was absolutely gorgeous, not very crowded at all.

I really don't know what is going on in peoples minds if they say that the Shell Island Resort isn't great. My friend had a brithday party there and we swam in the indoor heated pool because it was in the middle of November and is was freezing cold outside. We had as much fun as you would have outside. Then we went outside in the hot tub. Wow is was just so relaxing. After that we went upstairs. We all slept in one room because it was so big and there was at least 12 people there. One slept on the couch and the rest of us slept on the floor like a normal sleep over. The girls parents were there the whole time too. But they didn't bother us because they slept on the 2 double beds that were in the room. We even had room 2 dance around in the room. But don't worry because if you want peace and no noise you can call the hotel and they will call the room that is noisy and tell them to make less noise. The hotel gives them 2 warnings and of they still don't act right they tell them that they have to leave. I hope this review helps you pick out a hotel...but just one more thing the rooms are only $99 per night and believe me I travel to alot of places and you can't get much cheaper than that.

Loved the resort

We were very happy with our stay at Shell Island. It was a very nice room, make sure to ask for a renovated room. The only thing is they really need to have a television in the bedroom also. The beach was the best and most private because it was on the end of the road, with a bird santuary next to it. The food in the resturant was very good. We will go back for sure!

Clean but Disappointing

The room was clean and bright - the kitchen facilities are VERY limited and the staff was NOT helpful at all. They advertised a restaurant and tiki bar - neither of which was open the 18th thru 22nd of May. I was not told that when I booked but led to believe they would be. There was no hotel information guide in the room and it was like pulling teeth to get information from anyone at the desk. We had a family emergency and my family called from 5:30 am until 6:30 am and no one answered the phone - the automated phone service would not let them get thru to our room. WHen I asked at the desk why this was I was told that there is a way to do it but the explanation is too long to leave on the answering tape and that somone should have answered - but no apology from them that we had trouble. Vending machines on floors 2 thru 6 were virtually empty. It was about 3 or 4 pm before our room was cleaned each day and everyday they left one less towel than we had used the day before.They do not allow pets but I got 37 flea bites in the 5 days we were there - I complained to the desk twice about the flea problem and the girl only shrugged and said the equivilent of "Oh well". I would never stay there again although the location and view were spectacular - the facility could be great if it had decent management and even one employee who cared in the least.

After pricing other hotels on Wrightsville Beach, we chose the Shell Island Resort as it was the most reasonably priced. You cannot imagine my delight when we entered a gorgeous suite, it must have been one of the newly redecorated ones because it was much nicer than the ones that I see pictured on the internet. Consisting of a bedroom with 2 double beds, with a TV and phone...2 bathrooms, a fabulous living area with convertible sofa, 2nd TV and phone and plenty of seating, a complete kitchenette and dining area and a balcony overlooking the pristine beach, it was heavenly. All this for $139/$149 a night, when a place down the beach wanted $180 and the Holiday Inn was $279 a night!
There was a fitness room on our floor, and the complimentary breakfast was teriffic. Both indoor and outdoor pool looked inviting and everything was scrupulously clean and well maintained.
I would go back again in a NY minute, and hated to leave.

This week May 5-the 8th: 20 of us from our family spent Thursday til Sunday at the Shell Island Resort. My room was ok but that was about it. There was a special of $129.00 from Monday til Thursday, then $179. for the weekend. we received the special over the regular $219.oo due to the graduation of my niece at UNCW. Unfortunately, some problems existed and they did not seem to care about getting things solved. If you can imagine people getting up to take a shower on Saturday and not having hot water, especially girls trying to get ready for graduation. One room had an electrical problem bbut that was eventually fixed. Of course Thursday was terrible with 60 mile an hour winds and pouring down rain.. Friday was a little bit better. By the time we all were leaving on Sunday it was beautiful, with the sunrise and the ocean on one side and the harbor on the other. Nice location at the end of the island but not worth the money. You can find another place a lot cleaner and more cooperative.

Awesome experience at the Shell Island Resort

We stayed at the Shell Island Resort on a Saturday-to-Saturday stay. The staff, location and comforts were outstanding for us, a family of four including two little ones.

The staff was customer service focused -- almost always opening the door, engaging in small talk and having a sense of humor. Two days into our stay we asked to switch rooms (due to neighbors, not hotel) and they were extremely accomodating. They gave us our pick of available rooms, even letting us view before moving our luggage. The staff constantly smiled and exchanged greetings and good-byes, just wonderful to see.

The location is excellent. Although not in walking distance to any of the restaurants, the beach is less crowded by others...and isn't the beach one of the best reasons to visit Wrightsville Beach? Next to the food of course!

The comforts of the hotel were many: I'll try to list as many as possible while being brief. A free continental breakfast every day with variety and taste (not sure if free breakfast is offered during summer), an indoor and an outdoor pool, all the rooms face the ocean - thus no need to request a beach view, cable tv plus HBO, balcony on every room, clean clean clean, plush beds, plenty of covered parking (who likes getting into a hot car?), and bathrooms with two sinks and two toilets. The only thing to improve would be to put a screen door to the balcony. They are currently renovating rooms -- both the rooms we stayed in were renovated.

Our stay at the Shell Island Resort was most enjoyable and we would not hesitate to stay there again or recommend it to others.

We arrived at 9:30pm on Friday and our King suite for one was NOT clean and ready and was on the first floor with no view of the ocean, just a dune and some construction equipment. We switched rooms to the 7th floor but had to have dbl beds. The view is wonderful however, a whole wall of windows! The evening staff was not very apologetic about their hotel but their morning staff was very courteous and friendly. Their free continental breakfast was also decent, with bagels, fruit, eggs and cereal. They also advertised special discounts available to people staying at this hotel, but when I inquired about them at the front desk they acted like I didn't know what I was talking about. All in all, the room (the clean one) was nice, the kitchenette was great, and the view was spectacular. However, at that time of year there were many other hotels offering ocean front views for less money and the hassle we encountered and lack of any effort on the staff to make our stay better left us with no desire to come back. We will stay elsewhere in the future.

There are plenty of other places to stay if you want to be near the ocean. Our stay at the Shell Island was less than acceptable. The staff is run by young, inexperienced help. Although they advertise that it was remodeled in 2003, our bathroom sink was old with scratches, mildew around the shower, and a toilet that had a high pitched rattled for 5 minutes after you flushed.
One day our room was never cleaned even after reminding the front desk two times that day. Our compensation was a few dollars off the price and we still had to make the beds ourselves.
The staff acted like it was a privledge for us to be staying there. I asked the front desk clerk for directions from Mapquest. He passed me along to another person, to be told they do not have any internet service. I found that hard to believe, and only after my persistance, did the clerk send me to the exective office where they accommodated me.
Stay away!!

Top Local Tips for Wrightsville Beach

Blue Water At least have a drink at the Blue Water outside - it's right on the inter-coastal waterway and if you're boat lovers like us, it's fun to watch the traffic. We also had dinner here and the seafood was delicious!

Jungle Rapids We went here after checking out and before heading home. It was a great ending to our vacation. A little pricey but everyone had a great time. Only 10 minutes from the resort.
