Prospecting for gemstones in nearby Hiddenite Hiddenite is just 20 minutes from Statesville. In hiddenite, you can mine for emeralds, rubies, topaz, saphires, sodalite, and othe gems/minerals. This can be done the easy way (sluicing buckets of dirt provided by the mine), the hard way (searching through the runoff creek), or the rewarding way (digging your own ore at the mine and then bringing it down to sluice). You may have seen this on the Discovery Channel. It is a lot of fun. Bring old clothes. YOU WILL GET DIRTY! From I-40, follow the signs to the Hiddenite museum. The mine is a short distance past the museum. Make a left where the road ends and a right at the sign that says "Hiddenite Gems, Inc." That's the Emerald Hollow Mine. TIP: Bring hand cleaner, paper towel, drinking water and a quart size sealable plastic container (to hold your finds). Tools can be rented cheaply at the mine. The mine is not expensive but is mostly a cash operation.

Skip Statesville If Possible If driving east on I-40 towards I-77 South and the Charlotte area, SKIP STATESVILLE all together. If you HAVE to spend the night here, try the new Hampton Inn just off I-77 at exit 49B near the Outback Restaurant. All other hotels in the area are old and dated and musty smelling! If heading west on I-40, go on to Hickory and stay there!
