Our children, who live in nearby Trinity Park, put us in Duke Tower, which is next to the neighborhood. We loved this place! It was homey, like a condo, with a pool and gardens. We played shuffleboard a few times with our grandkids and had fun. We walked over to Trinity Park and didn't need a car, since we rode with my son and his wife back and forth to the airport. It is our favorite place to stay and much better than imposing on my son and his wife!

Top Local Tips for Durham

Go see the Durham Bulls Play. Great park. Moderately priced. the Bulls are the AAA team of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. You can see future, current and former Major League players much closer for a lot less than it costs in the Big League parks.

I-85 Travel If you travel by I-85 and want to get back to the condo, take exit 176 and take N. Gregson to Trinity. Make a left onto Trinity and you'll run into the condos on the right-hand side. Google Maps took me to exit 177 and I got miserably lost. I discovered the easier route while getting some Carolina-style barbeque from Hog Heaven (exit 175 on I-85). Of course, don't forget to try the Carolina-style barbeque while you're cruising up and down the Interstate!

Ask about rental car rate Rental car rates at RDU are absolutely obscene (but so are cab fares from RDU to Durham). If you arrive in time to get the regional bus service from the airport, take that (or have someone pick you up if possible) and get your rental car in town. Neither of those was feasible for me on this trip, BUT Duke Tower staff did note that they have a contract rate with one of the rental car companies located at the airport. The rate was not as good as rates in town, but far better than the normal airport rates...roughly comparable with a cab ride (a little more after taxes/fees) and you got use of the car for a day. I did not need a car at all for the middle part of the trip, so I returned this one after the first day (I had a ride back to be able to make the return), and rented another one in town (with no extra charge for airport return) for that part of the trip.
