Top Local Tips for Wilmington
Adirondack park Drive up Whiteface Mountain, see Ausable Chasm and take the raft ride (it's worth the extra money), sit on the bank of Chapel Pond before 10AM or later evening (it's a small lake with a rock cliff along the back, the silence is unbelievable), drive through the Keene area, take the kids on the North Hudson railroad, have ice cream and a grinder in Vermont (it's scenic dairy country, but maybe not for those who dislike cows, ice cream is great, every gas station makes their own subs, not the junk you get elsewhere. The people are quiet until you talk to them for a little while!) The great thing about the Adirondacks is there are very few tourist traps, it is not over-built like Niagara, but offers beautiful mountainous views and most of the people are friendly. There are a lot of lakes and rivers.
shopping and dining The Lake Placid Pub and Brewery----great place to get your "growlers" and have a bite to eat...pretty friendly crowd. Simply Gourmet outside of Lake Placid on rt 86 going towards Saranac Lake...great combinations on sandwiches, all different types of breads, all fresh baked and all food prepared daily. And,finally, the shops of Lake Placid are great....a little bit for everyone...antiques, Grateful Dead, kids and hobbies, very eclectic area, and lots of fine dining too!
Many restaurants have limited hours. Be careful if you visit at non-peak times. We went in early June and found that restaurants were open for breakfast and then after 5pm. No options for late lunch.
