We have stayed at this hotel in the past. Once we got a very smelly room which was labeled non-smoking. This time we got a conference room with a large conference table and light fixture plus, incidentally, a bed. We left a night before we planned to. Staff was not responsive. I guess they feel they have a captive audience since there is racing in the summer and Skidmore College during the rest of the year.

Historical Traveller Reviews of The Saratoga Hilton Hotel

Roughing it in Saratoga Hotel

from Janismcd
Stayed here in mid-May for a conference, was concerned after reading the reviews but it was better than just bearable. The good news: staff were unfailingly polite and pleasant, reception staff, housekeeping, and others included. The not so good news: the renovations are ongoing, pool, restaurant, and gift shop are still closed. Breakfast was available in a lounge area, and sometimes coffee as well, but the coffee service was intermittent and you never knew if it would be available or not. Our room on 2nd floor was ok, recently renovated and clean. Our friends were brought to a room with a running toilet, they requested another room, were placed in a "just renovated and not quite ready for habitation room" with only one light. Additional lights were hastily brought in, but they had to dodge extension cords for the length of the stay. Plaster dust filled the lobby for an hour or so one afternoon, but the cleanup was quick and thorough. If you can hold off on staying here till the renovations are complete, you should be ok.

First and last visit

When we got there I asked to see a list of the amenities (since this was supposed to be a four star hotel). No amenities (they are under renovations) and no discounts or substitutions. It would have been nice if they had told us when we made our reservations. But that was only the beginning- the nasty comments about the customers by people behind the desk, the broken lights in the elevator that were never repaired in our four days there , the room was not cleaned, and the "topper" was that when we asked to have the sheets changed-- they weren't (so the following morning we planted something between the sheets to prove it). I could go on, but I just get upset thinking about it.

You would have a quieter night in a dorm room!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I have stayed at the Saratoga Hotel twice now and both times we have had terrible experiences. We stayed at the Saratoga this past weekend. Do not stay here if you want a full night’s sleep. Seriously, the hotel is not sound proof at all. We could hear everything going on in the hallways and were kept awake until 1 am by slamming doors and people talking in the halls. Then in the early morning we were awoken by a cell phone in the room next door. Our room was large (we had a mini-suite) and newly renovated with very nice furniture and a very comfortable bed. However the room was very dusty, the coffee table and side tables were covered in dust and the bathroom counter still had cleaner on it that wasn’t wiped off. There was trash in the cabinets underneath the sink in the living room (empty miller lite twelve pack box, empty shoe box, paper bags). This is not at all what we expected of a “Luxury” hotel.

The first time we stayed at the Saratoga we were appalled by the hotel (kept awake until 5am by drunk people running and yelling down the halls, smoke in our room from people smoking in the hallways even though we had a non-smoking room, dirty towels and staff that didn’t care or do anything about our complaints) and we only stayed a second time because I wrote a letter complaining to the management and was sent one free night. The free night wasn’t even worth it and I discourage anyone from staying here. If you are visiting a student at Skidmore as we were, you would probably have a quieter night in the dorms!

Terrible, disguating, and very rude management,

from A TripAdvisor Member
New management is terrible, rude, and the hotel is filthy. Previous reviews for this establishment may be relevant to the previous management who were good, but the new management who recently took over are the equivalent of a slum lord. The hotel is disgustingly dirty plus the staff is very rude and discourteous. Rooms were laden with mildew and mold, plus ongoing construction in the hotel made the dust so thick we had trouble breathing. Electrical problems in the hotel resulted in no heat when it was freezing cold outside. The management couldn't care less. They responded by saying "You chose to stay here." We've never been treated so badly.

The Saratoga Prime, a work in progress.

from dukegreg
The Saratoga Prime Hotel, also known as The Saratoga Hotel is undergoing renovation during the winter 05 and into the Spring 06. Rates are low now due to construction. We had a great room at half the price [ $68 ] of the nearby Marriott [ $139 ] for off season. Ask for a room on the south side [ away from the remodeling ] .The pool area and some hallways are not getting the housekeeping you would expect from a 4 star hotel, but we overlooked that in light of the super low rate. A new chef will be taking over the restaurant which was good during off season. The location is as good as it gets for restaurants and shopping. Plan a visit before the summer season when the rates will skyrocket to $399 a night.

Hotel in transition now starting to shine!

After seeing all of the previous reviews I was skeptical, but I love the idea of being right in down town Saratoga Springs so I went for it (easy access to the towns shopping and dining). This hotel has the best location, and now that it is being renovated, the product is going to be the best in the area, bar none. My room was fanastic, very contemporary, very new, and very clean-looks great. Past reviews talk about how awkward it is to enter the hotel from the rear parking lot. I actually asked why that is and the front desk person said that they are actually creating a new entrance on Broadway (the cities main street)that will allow ppl to park and check in, much more convenient to the lobby and front desk. Sounds like they have been listening to these reviews, they are definitely making some noticable changes. I will be back!

Loved the Saratoga Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
Absolutely Magnificent. We were there for a few days to relax and we did just that! It was a wonderful experience. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The rooms were beautiful - the hotel has just be renovated and it sure looked like it. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. When I go back to Saratoga Springs and I will - I will not stay anywhere else!!!

Only Stay Here if You Get The Room Pricelined for Half the Rack Rate

from michmouse
Stayed here over a weekend during the peak season. The location is excellent, but the hotel is simply not worth the rack rate. The night we were there, they were charging 179.00 a night. We paid 75.00, which was a good deal, considering it was racing season.

I would not consider paying rack rate here. The hotel looks like a brick jail from the outside, and the rooms were noisy. Much of the hotel needs serious updating, especially the pool area.

Definitely attempt Pricelining this property if you want a great location for a fairer price.

Recent stay at the Prime (Saratoga Hotel) was better than expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading the reviews posted for this hotel, I called my husband and told him to cancel our trip, because all the other hotels were either booked or only had smoking rooms available. We were visiting family and it was the only weekend everyone could get away, so we went anyway (Sept 24-25). We requested the upper floors and were pleasantly surprised. The room was recently refurbished and quite clean. Although the bathroom was small, there was a large sitting area with refrigerator, microwave and sink. The bed was comfortable and sheets seemed new as well (not stained as mentioned in previous reviews). The room was quiet. We opted for the downtowner special ($50 to spend in town and breakfast included). We definitely got our moneys worth. We did not see the pool area, so I can't comment on whether it is run down. When I mentioned to the staff about the horrible reviews, he did tell me there were issues during racing season but they have been working to resolve them. He also mentioned that the entire lobby will be undergoing renovations as well. I would not think twice about going back to this hotel.

Could be better

from NYtravelguy
Stayed at the Prime over the weekend of Sept. 16-18 with wife and two year old. Despite the negative reviews, I booked here because a) they accept young children (unlike a lot of the B&B's) b) it's a great location and c) a number of the other hotels were already sold out. I kept my fingers crossed (and requested a high floor based on one of the previous reviews) and things turned out okay. I paid for a mini-suite which was supposed to have a "cooking area" complete with microwave, fridge and sink. The room was pretty large and nicely decorated -- very modern looking (clearly had been renovated recently). There was a nook with a sink and a fridge, though the inside of the fridge was small and quite dirty (though it was hidden in a stylish cabinet) but there was no microwave. My only other complaint with the room was that the windows open (which was nice) but had no screens, so room filled with bugs pretty quickly. Also, the view from our room was of a brick wall. But, all in all, the room was very nice.

The common areas of the hotel (with the exception of the lobby) are pretty worn. The pool area, in particular, could use some renovation -- peeling paint etc. As is mentioned in many other reviews, the layout of the hotel is unfortunate. It is quite a hike from the parking area to most of the rooms. The layout facilitates access to the conference facilities which, it should be noted, seem to be a focal point at the Prime.

Didn't try the restaurant or have much contact with the staff, so can't really comment on those aspects. In sum, if you get a decent price, want to stay in town and can get a renovated room on the higher floors, it's a fine place to stay. But if you want super clean, small and/or romantic, look elsewhere.
