Won't Be Back At The Wawbeek
The Wawbeek rests on its laurels. This magnificent "old camp" -- which charges $300+ per nite for the cheapest lodging -- dissapoints greatly and relies on past reviews to entice customers. I recently spent a mid-October weekend there, in a cabin that lost power in themiddle of the night. Yes,there was snow in the air and no heat or electricity throughout the nite. No flashlights in the cabin. When I inquired about this at the main desk, the owner explained that it was a "momentary loss" --(5 hours) and that truly it was no big deal as her husband and her sleep with their window open at night, heat turned down. Difference is, they don't pay $300 for their "rustic." No attempt to compensate for this experience was made. During this time of our conversation, an older couple also came in to complain about their heatless night. Again, the owner even seemed miffed. A simple gesture, whether offering to take 10% off the bill OR a complimentary drink wouldahve been nice -- but nothing. Hospitality runs short in this place. When it came time for the much touted dinner at the Wawbeek Restaurant, our party of 5 was disappointed. The steak we ordered was ordinary, flavorless, overdone (medium rare was ordered). The desserts were right out of the box: death by chocolate, commercial tasting white raspberry cake. Nothing that would tie into the mid-october harvest: no apple pie, pumpkin, nothing. Again, very disappointing. Lastly, as a writer, i sat in my cabin and wondered, why a place that is on such beautiful grounds does not have any windows one can look out of to see the beautiful foliage. Cabins are old and floors are sloping. The bathroom had an electric heater that was broken and absolutely no heat in the bathroom. It was freezing. With the exorbitant prices this place charges, I have to ask, why haven't they made improvements? I, was enticed by the old newspaper reviews I read and the fabulous pictures i saw online. Staying there was nothing like they presented. Shame on you Wawbeek. I won't be back
