| Seek out new forms of motel life... |

From the street the Celtic Motel looks like one of those blasts from the immediate post-war past. This is what attracted me and my friend to it--the curse of being historians and archivists I guess.
My friend and I were in the Oneonta area to attend an academic conference at Cooperstown. Fed up with the extremely poor quality of the dormitories at Hartwick College--a key I had used to enter my room the first day of the conference would not work the second--led us to search out new digs, particularly new digs with air conditioning. Wanted to call ahead for reservation but no answer or answering machine at 8am you would think someone would be attending or an answering machine. When did check in around NOON!!! It seems the owner/family lives in the complex also and children are poking around. also I managed to be jostled by a couple of local drunken men who blurted they’d been staying in the Cabinesques for weeks while on bingers and I should come join them, seemed as if there was no privacy from that and no one there to control it. Staff was not friendly at check in when asked about answering machine and staff was even less friendly when told about other renters. |
