We recently visitedNYC for two days staying at the Wingate. It was so not New York City. Genuinely friendly staff, spotless room, (suite) continental breakfast beyond expectations. Thank you for a real nice visit.

Not too bad for a New York hotel
from Lenee
Good:
- Location near Penn Station
- Has alot of convenience stores
- Food (Starbucks, Mac 24hours) but most closes ard 6pm
- Shopping: Macy, 34th street has a few big malls, Old Navy, Forever 21
- Wireless is free and fast.
Bad:
- Front desk service ignores request on transferring the phone over to my room for a couple of times
- Room we reserved a SUITE room, but it was a normal King Size bed type of room instead

Loved the Wingate NYC
from PACatLady
I have stayed at several hotels in the New York City area and this by far was the best. Everything about the rooms were excellent. Beautfully decorated, spotless, flat screen TV's. The location was great. With-in walking distance to many area attractions. Staff was friendly and courteous and the continential breakfast was awesome. You don't get that anywhere in NYC. Can't wait to go back.
Great value

I agree with the other Excellent reviewers: this hotel has a great location, is clean, with friendly staff, and at a good price. I strongly recommend this hotel.
Really nice, spacious, clean......
from Sarahldavies2001
Don't let the road where the hotel is based put you off, it doesn't look that nice, but it's absolutely fine and the central location is fantastic.
We were allowed to check in early. The room was spotless, spacious and everything was brand new.
There was a little noise, but you are a fool if you think that it will be silent anywhere in NY.
Breakfast was fantastic, and served until 10am, not 9am. It was the only hotel that I found that offered breakfast free of charge. And the price was great, $240 for two people per night. That's not expensive for NY.
Staff were friendly, would do anything to help. When we checked out we asked if we could leave our bags there for the day. There was absolutely no problem, and they didn't charge us for doing it.
Overall, it was a great hotel at a great price. It's not luxurious, but it's everything else!

Reading various reviews and forum posts the general concensus is that when choosing accommodation in New York the priority is location and value for money. A common theme is 'so long as the room is clean ......' I thought that too until I found the Wingate Inn!!
Location:
Around the corner from Macys and close to many attractions. Subway close by - straight trip to Ground Zero and Century 21. We felt at ease walking around even at night (there were five of us).
Accommodation:
Considering we would have been happy with somewhere clean we were thrilled when the room was spacious (we had serious shopping to do), confortable and well equiped. The room had large wardrobe, a safe, a microwave, a fridge (empty for your stuff rather than a mini-bar) a coffee making machine, Flat Screen TV, clockradio, cordless phone. large desk with comfie leather chair, a chest of drawers, an armchair and footstool, two large comfortable beds, loads of pillows - and a cuddly toy ......(ok maybe not!!) The bathroom was large, great power shower. We didn't hear any street noise.
Staff:
From the moment we arrived to the time we left the staff could not do enough for us. We needed extra towels and got enough towels to have .... a towel party!! They were helpful with directions and suggestions and when checking out were very accommodating when some of us wanted to pay by cash and others by credit card.
I wouldn't think twice about recommending the hotel to friends and would definitely stay there again.

Great location, shame about the hotel
from Hajinder
My wife and I stayed at the hotel for 6 days from 30 Dec - 5th Jan 07. We arrived at 3pm but due to our room requiring cleaning had to wait an hour to checkin. This was because we had requested a room with a King size bed, rather then one with two double beds.
The room itself ( room 502) seemed fine, clean and spacious for a NYC hotel with a large comfortable bed (I'm 6'4), plenty of space for our bags (as well as seeing in the new year we were here to do some serious shopping) and a large bathroom with shower/bath combo.
The breakfast which was included was suprisingly good, typical NY fair, cereal, porridge, boiled eggs, waffles and vairous bready things as well as plenty of juice and teas/coffee. Although the downside is that it is only open from 7-9am so if you have had a late night or your body clock if having difficulty adjusting you may have problems getting up in time.
The location itself is excellent, the area is known as the Garment district. The hotel is located on 35 West between 7th and 8th (useful to know when your getting a cab) and with 10 mins walf from Times square. There is a subway nearby (which we did'nt use) and Macys literally around the corner.
Now for the downside, on our third night at the hotel we were woken up at 2am after suddendly noticing that the room was getting very cold. After checking the air con controller which we had switched off we could see thaat the vents were still blowing cold air into the room. So we called reception who said someone would be up in a few minutes. 30mins later and my wife and I getting v cold I went down to reception to see what had happened. The employee agreed to have a look at the problem. After fiddling around with it for another half hour he could'nt seem to fix the problem and his only suggestion was that we put the thermostat to blow hot air!!
We insisted that he change our room (by now it was 3am) so he came back with key cards to a room on the floor below and disappeared, not offering to help us move our luggage.
The new room (401) had 2 double beds which were too short for me and due to the 2 beds the room was much less spacious, but the air con seemed to work properly.
The following day when we came back to our room in the early evening we noticed that it had not been cleaned, so we rang reception and after explaining this requested some towels, which did'nt arrive and once again I had to go down to reception and ask for them in person.
On the day before we left I requested a service car to collect us from the hotel and take us to the airport at 4pm the next day. Guess what 4am that morning we get a call saying the car is waiting!! The car which came at the correct time then charged us $69 for the journey which shocked me since two years previously we were charged $45.
Overall as you can probably guess I would not recommend this hotel. The staff although friendly don't provide the level of service I would expect.

Very Nice!

Newly constructed hotel is a major plus. Our room was very quiet, very clean, and roomy considering other hotel rooms in Manhattan. There was even a full vanity in the bathroom which is great for women travelers along with a mini-fridge and microwave. The staff was also friendly and helpful. We went to New York for an event at the Madison Square Garden, so the location was perfect ... only a block and a half away and Macy's only a half block away. I would stay here again in a heart beat and highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to stay in the ultra busy Times Square area.
Excellent location, friendly staff, clean rooms
from filleenchine
All the reviews here have said it all.
Would choose to stay here again if I visit New York again. Location is excellent, with lots of subway lines at the doorstop. Macys-Herald Square is practically just next door. We walked almost everywhere, to Broadway for musicals, to Times Square, Rockefeller, Empire State Building, Madison etc.
Staff are very friendly and helpful. Hotel rooms are big and clean. Furniture and furnishings are new, since this hotel is less than 1 year old. Only hitch is that the breakfast room is a little small, can get super-crowded during peak breakfast hours.

i stayed in the wingate inn for 5 days during christmas NYE period, after a recommendation from a friend. It is in a perfect location just one block away from macys, near all the shops but the road itself is quiet so no loud noise.
3 of us stayed in a room with two double beds, the beds were very comfortable and the room was spacious enough. It also had a nice large bathroom. Everything in the room and hotel in general was of very good condition, as the hotel is only 4 months old. Make the most of the free breakfast. Also there is free computer, printer, and phone (for local calls) in the basement. Staff were very friendly and helpful, I have no critiscms.

Great Hotel!

Enjoyed our Holiday stay at the Wingate Inn. The front desk staff could not have been any nicer or more efficient. The room was very clean and while small, nicely appointed! Kids loved the gym and I was able to check my email in the office downstairs. The complimentary breakfast was wonderful. Great location. Highly recommended.

use a compass A small travel compass will help you get your bearings after you get off the subway and proceed to make your way around the streets. As well, research your restaraunt choices on websites such as "menupages.com". There are so many choices it helps to have the menus and prices ahead of time.
