Lots of little niggly problems attended our stay at the YMCA at 5 West 63rd Street in the summer of 2007, some of them related to the fact that renovations were underway. Yet, you need to know that newly renovated rooms (without bathrooms - we could not get one with) are poky and lacking in space in which to both move and store things. How four adults can survive for more than a day or two in one of these cells is beyond me (there were only three of us and we barely fit). In addition, and this was again in the newly renovated sector, the quality of the recent workmanship and the choice of materials ranges from faulty to poor. We found the ostensibly attractive self-contained shower/toilet facilities to be literally falling apart after only a few months use. Faucets broken, clothes hooks fallen off, shower doors unhinged, main doors not locking, soap holders kaput: a veritable litany of minor disasters that does not auger well for the conditions that might be found in say, early 2008!! Next to this you can put the very positive attributes of great location, nice neighbourhood, local shopping, swimming pool and fitness centre, cafeteria, left luggage, good 24 hr security and so on. For the price, it's a go, but just be aware that it is no hotel, by any stretch of the imagination.

A block from Linclon Center and Central Park and 3 blocks from the subway, for the price you cant do better. When one of us needed to rest, the other had the extensive YMCA facilities to use. The rooms were small but clean but we werent there to be in the room with our eyes open! Cafe had good plain food open late!

I was a little nervous making my way to this hostel based on some of the reviews I read, but I don't see where the problem was! Myself and one of my friends stayed here for 9 nights from the 15th July.
We paid 250euro each. Our room was spotless and cleaned everyday. Bathrooms were fine. Always had hot water. Okay given that we were 2 guys, we didn't mind the whole shared bathroom thing. Girls mightn't be as comfortable with it (although there are separate girls&guys bathrooms), but a lot of HOTELS in New York have shared bathrooms!
The gym was Gigantic, never got a chance to use the pool tho. You can get a decent and cheap breakfast downstairs every morning, the location is excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Delighted we decided to save a bit of money booking a hostel instead of a hotel!

Has ups and downs, but overall - worth the price

I stayed at the West Side YMCA for 3 nights on May 2005. Had a single room with shared bathroom.
Being a young woman travelling alone, I wanted a cheap yet safe place. WS YMCA answered my requierments, and had available rooms when all other hotels were fully booked (it was the NYU graduation weekend).
I'll quickly sum up the pros and cons:
Good things:
* Great location - steps away from Lincoln Center, Central Park and Columbus Circle. I felt safe walking there at night and had lots of things to do during the day.
* The rooms are cleaned every day.
* The women's shared bathroom is opened with a code, so strangers can't come in.
* TV in the room with basic cabel channels.
* Nice people at the front desk.
* Access to the great sport facilities.
Not so good things:
* The rooms are small and spartan. Only bed, chair, desk.
* The corridors are narrow and sometimes made me feel like I'm in prison.
* There were times when I wanted to take a shower and didn't have hot water.
* Very thin walls.
Like I said - overall it's worth the $70, especially because of the location. On the other hand, I wouldn't have stayed there for more than my 3 days - I want to be a little more spoilt on my vacations.

stayed in June 04, can't beat the location, 5min walk to the subway- clean rooms, clean showers, working AC- For the price, how can complain about the college dorm feel.
Great Stay!!

I recently stayed at the west side ymca and when i arrived i was very pleasantly surprised. After reading some of the reviews on here i was a little worried. i was staying on the top floor, so dont have much experience of floors below the 12th, but my room was very nicely sized, clean and had wardrobe space and a full length mirror. being in a group of 40, some of my friends were on the 12th floor, and although the ones that had not yet been refurbished were not as comfortable as mine was, they were still perfectly adequete. the only problem that i had was that one the nights when it rained, it was extremely noisy in my room. the rain fell onto the metal fan box outside the window and was very loud. apart from that i would definatley stay at this resort again. the location was excellent, with central park right across the road and not far from times square, broadway etc.
Stop complaining!

I visited the Y on a college trip with 40 of us staying there and I'm slightly confused by the complaints? Obviously the Y isn't the Plaza, but thats a given in the price which is exceedingly cheap given the location which is perfect! Perfect walking distance for the subway, Central Park, the new mall, McDonalds, supermarkets, pharmacies and other bakeries or cafes. It's also reasonable walking distance to 5th Avenue. The view from most windows was beautiful and perfect reason to get up so early in the morning! When staying in New York its a given that its not a relaxing trip, we were hardly in the Y and so the only need was to shower and sleep which the Y provides easily. Our floor had plenty of bathrooms which were clean, showers were powerful and always provided hot water which was needed in the cold winter. All in all, the perfect place to stay when you'd prefer to spend money on the sites and shops that New York provides!

I stayed here in December of 2004, and you cannot beat the location. You are three minutes from the subway, less than 15 minutes (on foot) from Times Square, and a half a block from Central Park. . Do not even think of checking in early --you won't be able too, but you can stash your luggage in a secure area for $1 a bag. If you arrive after the check in time of 2 p.m. and your room is not ready and you want to stash your bags, ask to see the manager if they try to charge you. Safety deposit boxes are available at the desk free of charge; keep your traveller's checks, unnecessary ID and cash there. Though the neighbourhood is safe, w 63rd is pretty deserted at night, and you will not feel comfortable walking around with a wad of money late at night. There is an on site cafeteria, with all the basics, and a clean area to sit in. Phone calls are 50 cents in the payphone, so do yourself a favour and buy a phone card if you are going to be making calls. Though there are no phones in the rooms, the desk will take messages; ask them for details.
I had a room with a private bath since I was travelling alone, and plush it was not, but clean it was. TV worked fine and the bed was comfortable, clean towels brought everyday. I would have appreciated a night table and a lamp though. Staff were friendly in a NYC sort of way --that is after a couple of days, they will smile when you say hello. Laundry facilities were clean, operational and available 24 hours, there were internet Kioks on site, but you can find cheaper ones nearby (Kinkos at Columbus Circle -5 minute walk). Yes, you will hear other people; no, it ain't the Hilton, but for the price, you won't beat it. I would stay here again.

I stayed in the West Side Y in February in one of the cheaper rooms and did not find it "torture" as another reviewer put it. It was excellent value for money: the TV worked, there was a closet and desk and I didn't see any bugs. One warning I do have though is that the top bunks do not have safety bars on them....do not place glass bottles on the top bunk unless you like cleaning up broken glass. The room was small, but you're in NYC for goodness sake - you're not going to be sitting in your room all day watching Blind Date. Actually we did this, and it was kinda fun.
Downstairs there is an excellent and cheap canteen and dining area. The fitness fascilities are wonderful, especially the steam room, but the swimming pool is VERY cold! Do not jump in straight after the sauna, unless you are from Finland.
Overall, very impressed.

Fine, no probs - position great!

Stayed at the Westside YMCS at the end of October. We had two rooms of 4. Both were fine. Clean but small and certainly bearable for 5 days. Had to share the communal bathrooms but found no probs here. There was never anyone else in the bathrooms when we wanted to use them. The walls are quite thin so if you're a light sleeper this may be a problem.
Thought the position was great, just a short stroll from Times Square and Central Park. Would recommend this YMCA if you intend to be up and out exploring NYC for most of the day. This isn’t a place to stay if you are looking for any kind of luxury, but certainly did the trick for us and meant we had even more money to spend shopping!

TOP FLOORS ONLY....
from TravellingMan999
Where to begin, where to begin? First off the bat, and it has been mentioned in another review...but the top floors and other floors are like two different hotels.
First, the general location of the Y, is good. 3 minute walk to a subway station, supermarkets and a Kinko's if you want reliable, but expensive internet connections. The staff on check in and check out were reasonable and friendly, and there is plenty of security. The neighbourhood is VERY safe.
As for the rooms: again, I have had the pleasure and displeasure of staying in both parts of the hotel. The top floors are single premium rooms. You get a room with carpet, a functional TV, paint, and adequate closet space. The rooms are not big, but they are comfortable and clean. The matresses are NOT the most comfortable, but they are tolerable. You are assigned a semi-private washroom/shower, i.e., only one person can use it at a time, and they are located down the hall from your rooms. Unlike some others here, I did NOT see any bugs on this level.
Now...if you can help it, do not get a "single" room. Again, single premium...good. Single...BAD. The rooms on the lower floors are grungy. There is no carpet, and there is just linoleum. The rooms are smaller, and there is less chance that the TV is going to work. I did see some bugs in those rooms. The washrooms are communal. One or two large ones on each floor, shared by ALL on the floor. And not to sound elitist, but having seen BOTH sides of this Y...the guests staying on the upper floors seem to be more..adjusted.
The BIGGEST problem. Noise!!! In order to get quiet room, you have to be away from the elevators AND the washrooms (on whatever floor you are on). That can take some work, and more often than not...you don't luck out. As well, if it is busy...then hallway traffic and whatnot is going to be a problem. Again...because the upper floors are more expensive...there seems to be fewer people on those floors, and again..say what you will, but they are just better behaved, and more socially adjusted. Why lie? It doesn't serve anyone reading this review, right?
You ARE allowed to use the fitness facilities of the Y by virtue of being a guest. Payment is required up front, but if you need to leave early ( like I did), they happily refunded the portion of my stay I wasn't going to require.
All in all...the "Y" can be a crapshoot. Get stuck with a tour group on your floor, and a room in a wrong location and you might be miserable. You will DEFINITELY have a better stay if you are in a single premium room. Speaking from experience ( having stayed in this "Y" 4 times over the last 3 years--if you don't like gambling with your trip, you probably want to avoid this Y...except that the price and location are beyond compare for accomodations in Manhattan--considering it's location near Columbus Circle ( 69-85 USD per night). And as I said...if you get the right room...it can be GREAT...if not...TORTURE. I've experienced both at this Y.

Excellent rooms- but TOP FLOORS ONLY
from A TripAdvisor Member
On a tour of the USA this summer we spent a week in NYC. we arrived a day early than are booking and the staff said we could have a more expensive room (only $7 pppn) for are first night and then move in to are booked room which seemed ok. the room was newly decorated clean light and airy and the Y is in a prime location with central park 100m from the entrance.
however the next day when we went to book into the cheaper room it was hideous!!! like a totally different hotel- dark smelt of urine gross bathroom, freaks everywhere.
dont stay in the cheaper rooms, it really is worth the extra couple of dollars!! (we imediatly upgraded!)
from what i gathered only the top couple of floors are 'redesigned' so opt for these.
hope this helps

Walking shoes If you are fit and no sure about taxie's it is easy to walk every where. It doesnt take to long to walk arounfd new york if you are prepared to do it. Take good walking shoes that are water proof esspecally in the winter times, cos feet get really cold.
You have to go there! Madison Square Garden
Bus Tours Take the bus tours if you want to investigate the landmarks cheaply and quickly if you don't have a lot of time! Wish we had of done that.
