Perfect for low-budget access to NYC

I have stayed here twice, and it remains my first choice for future stays as well.

No, it's not a fancy five-star hotel. But yo get a room, a bed, and its affordable. Yes, the room colors are gaudy, there's 8 layers of paint, and the doors seem to have had locks changed 100 times. But it works, its a great location, and I always felt safe. Great restaurants, a great jazz club (Smoke), an authentic bagelry, and the subway (1-2-3 Red line) are in easy walking distance. You can get *anywhere* in Manhattan from here.

If you're a priss expecting luxury, go elsewhere - and pay for it. If you're a budget-conscious traveller who needs a place to lay your head while you spend your money in the garment district, at the theater, or at ESPN, and you're flexible and easy-going - THIS is the place.

This place is a joke... view their site and you'll get tricked into thinking you'll get a sterile, functional, bug free room... it's all a lie! Our bottom bunk didn't even have linens, they lie about amenities right down to the air conditioning. Don't stay on the 5th floor either, cause if there is a fire, you'll surely die. The pictures on their website are from a different location, and are nothing less than pure deceit. For the real pictures go to www.portlandmusicians.com/gallery/dump. I'd never stay here again, and would not even advise my worst enemy to stay here. The homeless would run screaming away from this place.

This place is the worst. Came to NYC to visit friends. When we arrived the desk attendant tried to "check us in" at their "other location". When we demanded a room at the location we had reserved we were told that there was none available. We returned the next morning and had to pay cash in advance for our 5 day stay. What a mistake! When we saw the room it looked like a death trap. We spent one horrible, sleepless night. The following morning we decided to check-out and request a refund. We got the run around and no money back. Basically the place is run by scam artists who pry on unsuspecting tourists. They should be shut down. DO NOT STAY at this hell hole.

Nightmare!!

This is undoubtedly the worst place you can imagine staying. The photos and info displayed on the web site are completly misleading. After you`ve checked in and enter the lift, it just becomes worse and worse. The rooms are disgusting. There is no form of room service like linen/towel changing no matter how long you`re staying, the staff are incredibly rude, and seem to be the dumbest and most unhelpful shower of dorks I`ve ever meet in my life. I stayed here two years ago and some homeless dude that I had been giving money to on Broadway kicked my door down while I was sleeping on my last night and threatened me. Again the staff were completely unable to handle the situation. I had to persuade him out on to the street with cigarettes and a few quid, and push a wardrobe up against my broken down door for the rest of the night.
So why did I stay twice? It`s cheap if you`re staying for a long time. It`s very central beside Broadway and Central Park and it seems to be a pretty respectable area. Basically, it`s tolerable if you are just using it for a bed, and you get as drunk as you possibly can before you go back to it every night!

Me and my wife stayed here we booked in for a weekend and stayed 2 hours.

When we arrived the looby looked real nice until we went to our room the corridor was absolutly a mess and the rooms were not fit for a pig to stay in the manager was totally arrogant and didn't care about our complaints This is defintley one place to stay well away from

i stayed here for a little over a week in the dorm and I didnt think it was bad for what i paid for and the staff were very nice to me but i had to leave early and they couldnt refund my money but a couple months later i stayed there again and the manager recognized me and upgraded my room cuz i didnt get a refund before and i thought that was nice but everyone also has 2 remember u get what u pay for and i thought it was a good deal

This place is a pure fraud.They make tons of money off people cancelling their rooms, and are often overbooked when the other hotels are full (because there is nowhere to flee).I suffered like **** in that place. It was the hottest days of summer, and the communal showers didn't work (no hot water).On security: no phones, no lights, no good locks, dark hallways and staircases, seems to be easy access by the back, no front desk vigilance. . . it's ugly.Services: None... No tv, working shower, cleanleaness, air-conditioning... (name everything they say they offer)This is the kind of place which deserves a class action. There's surely a money trail: money coming from this "studio" manager (he apparently runs other hotels) and many websites offering travel support. MAFIA. The *****e'rs!

Run, don't walk from this place! All the review I now have read about it are so true! I wish I had read them before I stayed here! Stay away, unless you love roaches, disgusting dirty rooms with doors that don't lock, dirty bathrooms, no windows or phones. They have the one and only pay phone in the lobby. We walked in and it didn't look so bad except for the tourists that sat on the steps and told us to stay away from this place , unless we like pets. I said what? They said yes, pets as in roaches! We then went up to our room and were disgusted with what we saw! We couldn't believe it! It looked nothing like the website at all!
The lobby was the only thing that looked a bit ok. We have gladly paid extra if we had known what was in store for us here! 20 minutes after checking in, we checked out and the desk guy wasn't even surprised, like it happened all the time! We had a lovely rest of our stay at the Ramada Hotel on the East side. I told Expedia if there putting it on there website under hotel bargains, then they should first have this place investigated. I hope they do! AWFUL!

Having seen the West End Studios web site, and the pictures appearing to show a nice clean hotel, how wrong we were.The hotel lobby is the only part that even resembles being clean. The rooms were ridiculously small, decor a total mess with paint flaking off walls, and bathrooms with no hot water ever.Our first night was overbooked(which apparently happens all the time) and thus we had to share a room with 8(eight!) other people! We complained vehemently but were basically told that no other New York hotels had rooms so it was here or nothing. Also the staff were very ignorantI wouldnt house homeless people or convicts in the West End Studios. Be warned, do not go near this hotel. How this hotel is allowed to dupe people like this and get away with it is a disgrace. The authorities should have it closed down until it is refurbished and properly managed. Hotel Newton is a far better bet.

Would not stay there again....

After reading these reviews I was pretty worried about staying here.
For one night and the price, considering everything else was booked, it was survivable. However, I still wouldn't stay there again. We requested two double beds and got two twins. The bathrooms were ok...actually better than the rooms I thought. The linens on the beds were stained and had holes...thankfully I had my own blankets in the car. The radiator in the room was the worst...it made terrible banging sounds, which got louder and louder, all night, which kept waking us up every hour. This is place is no Hilton...it's not even up to par with a Motel 6! Wouldn't recommend unless you have a short stay with absoultely no place else to stay.

this is a no go hotel: they lie, cheat and in the end steal your money.
We have had really bad experiences with west end studios and looking at the other reviews we're not the only ones. Their website is just one big lie, none whatsoever is remotely true. The place is broken down, worn out, a dump, the rooms and everything in it filthy, dusty, stained, broken. You're better off at a shelter for the homeless, at least they don't charge you almost 100 dollar and they don't cheat and steal from you.

Spread the news about west end studios and make them go out of business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I stayed there in January of 2003. It really wasn't that bad. It was not nice at all, however I wasn't expecting much. There was no control for the heat - my room was just hot. But I could open the window some and even it out. Never saw bugs and they cleaned the bathrooms (you have to share) several times a day. Its just a place to sleep, or at least thats all I used it for. My door locked fine and I never had any problems.

The WORST place I've ever stayed in. Don't believe the pictures on the Internet. We saw 2 rooms and both were worse than the apartments I had in college. Dirty rooms, worse bathrooms, elevator is really scary - doors won't lock - Stay at the Y instead - Stay under a bridge instead!

I have never stayed in a place like it. We were in a party of 4 people and had 2 rooms. Both were really bad. The rooms smelt like a drain and of urine. The beds were tiny, the blankets and sheets were not clean, the doors would not lock properly, the windows were boarded up, there was not 1 fire escape, the sink was cracked and had not been cleaned in years, lead pipe work in the rooms, it was dusty and dirty, all wood work had wood worm which had been re-painted, toilet seats were cracked, the fridge sounded as if it was goin to blow up and was filthy, electrical fittings had bare wires.The hotel left you feeling dirty, unsafe, vulnerable and very disgusted. It is an accident / tradegy waiting to happen. We even didnt un-pack our luggage. We checked out and went to stay at the Confort Inn which was much better. The staff at the West End did not seem to be surprised when we checked out. DO NOT BELIEVE the photographs. They dont look like they were taken in the same hotel. If you do stay there, just make sure you wipe ur feet on the way out!!!!!

Top Local Tips for New York City

Water Taxi I would recommend the water taxi for baseball games at Shea. It drops you off just 2 blocks from the park. You also get the see the city from the river and there is a bar on the boat.

How to get around NY. Buy a map of the bus and subway routes, it's easy to figure out and you save money by not taking a cab everywhere. Buy a METROCARD for UNLIMITED rides on the bus and subway, only $24.00 for a whole week.

Good cheap Italian We found a lovely restaurant in the East Village called Bona Fides it was located on Second Ave and 3rd street on the east side of Second Ave. Very good and cheap! Squisita!!!
