Historical Traveller Reviews of Wellington Hotel
Not really worth it
from A TripAdvisor Member
Decided to stay in NYC for 1 nite with little notice. Didn't want to spend too much and chose the Wellington. Decent rate -- $131 -- but the room was pretty poort. Old worn carpet ripped away from the wall, TV cabinet so off balance (floors!) I had to prop it up with a hanger to keep the doors open, didn't mind the size, don't expect much in NYC but for this rate, 30-30, Ameritania and others are as good a buy. Location is good but still a little far up for my tastes.
Convenient, but Nothing to Write Home About
from A TripAdvisor Member
The location is across the street from Carnegie Hall. Since I was attending a concert there, it was convenient for me.
The room was dark and I was surprised at the lack of counter space in the bathroom.
I took the "breakfast included" package, but it only allowed for a few choices. I guess I'm spoiled by all the great breakfast buffets I've had on the west coast.
Was surprised that they didn't have a computer room (access to internet). Front Desk told me it was being planned for the future.
Overpriced -- but, as I said, the location was good for my purposes.
Convenient Location

My husband and I stayed at the Wellington for five nights July 9th thru July 14th. The price was reasonable and the location convenient. However, the room was very small, a full size bed instead of a king, the shower old but great water pressure. The dresser drawer was broken, the air conditioner was leaking on the carpet, and the mattress was very old and we both sank to the middle. Luckily, we did not stay in the room much as there is much to much to do in NY. Thanks for all the other reviews!
Big Bargain at a small price

From check in to check out, we couldn't have asked for nicer staff in our hotel. Although the rooms are older, they have a lot of charm. The location of the Wellington Hotel could not be beat. We would gladly stay there again on a return visit.
Had a great time at the Wellington

We stayed at the Wellington over Memorial Day weekend, 2003. After reading the reviews and finding out that the Wellington was not in the AAA guidebook I panicked and tried (unsuccessfully) to find accomodations elsewhere. The Wellington is not the most bestest hotel in New York. Having said that, it is a great deal for the money, and the location can't be beat. There is a subway station right near the front door of the hotel-very convenient! Times Square is really close. Carnegie Hall (where my daughter was singing) is less than a block away. Central Park is really close. Not so good things: The lobby was packed at check in and check out times, so plan ahead. The heating/ac sounds as if the space shuttle is taking off in your room. The elevator is really slow. Room decor is a little outdated. This hotel is not for small children-windows fully open to the outside. Good things: The staff is friendly and very helpful. The maids were friendly and they did a great cleaning job (we could smell the bleach). Piping hot water all of the time! Location!!! Again -very easy subway access. The hotel is very affordable. Would I go back? Definitely. It's not the Ritz, but hey this is New York and unless you're a princess or something, it is perfectly ok.
Worst Dump

This was one of the most -- if not the most--awful hotel expreiences my husband and I have ever had, regardless of cost. We had booked far ahead, to have a nice overnight in Manhatten away from the kids. The check-in was a nightmare; rude staff and obvious disorgnaization. Tour groups were hanging out in the lobby, many waiting over an hour for luggage. Our first room was disgusting, dingy, depressing, and old enough that the tile bathroom reminded me of my grandmother's tenement apartment of distant memory (except hers was in better shape). Also, the bedcovers and ruug were stained. We asked for a change, but no one wanted to help at first, and actually told us to leave them alone, they were too busy with the tour groups. We were given another room 90 minutes 90 minutes later, but the bellman refused to help with our single suitcase. The next room was a so-called "suite," but the furniture looked like castoffs from K-Mart or an old college dorm room. Again, dark and depressing...I was afraid to turn off the lights, lest some creature jump up to share our bed. It took all my self-control not to check out and run home (and, believe me, my home is nothing fancy) The hallways were filthy, too, with actual piles of dirt in the center, and a vacuum cleaner and broom standing near them, as if we were supposed to clean up ourselves. I am convinced that anyone who gives a glowing recommendation to this hotel is either a friend or family of the owner(s), or hopelessly enebriated. This was the dump of all dumps!
Great Location, Minimal Accomodations
from A TripAdvisor Member
Lobby was very cozy. Rooms were dorm size. Standard double beds are actually twin beds unless you ask for double/double upgrade to full size beds. No vending machines, no iron or refrigerator in room. Can hear noise from streets below or nearby rooms. This is obviously an old renovated building. The locations was excellent. Staff was polite. This is a great place to stay if you require minimum accomodations and perks.
We love it!

We have stayed at the Wellington once a year for the past six years. We have only had one bad experience---a room with electrical problems--the air conditioning kept going out. To make up for our inconvenience, the management gave us a huge terrace room on a top floor for the same price. We did not even raise a ruckus to get this---they offered. We have always had courteous, helpful service. The location cannot be beat, and for the price it is perfect. We have never had a dirty room, but I admit there is a big difference in the quality of rooms. We have stayed in a wide variety for the same price. Last month, we paid about $6.00 more a night (including tax) to upgrade from their cheapest room to a king size bed. The difference was worth much more than $6.00 a night! This year our friends had a problem with their room--several things did not work. Once they brought this to the attention of the front desk (politely), they were moved immediately.
Worst experience ever

I recently stayed at the Wellington and I will never go back. The hotel staff was rude and unhelpful. The housekeeping staff couldn't decide how many towels were needed in our room and the numbers of each type of towel changed everyday. Sometimes we would have 4 washcloths and no handtowels or vice versa. There was a burned out light bulb that never got fixed even after we asked for the problem to be fixed several times. The noise from the air conditioning unit kept us up half the night. The walls and carpet were filthy as was the bedspread. The only good things I can say is that even though the bathroom was small, it was very clean.
Great Price and Location---Little Positives Elsewhere

The one great thing about the Wellington is it's location it is a 5 minute walk from Times Sqaure in one direction and Central Park in the other. Also, it is just around the block from Carnegie Hall. Rockefeller Center is also within easy walking distance. However, what the Wellington has in location, it lacks in some other features (based on my experience). *At one point this was obviously an old apartment building and my room showed it's age. There was paint chipping, old stained carpeting and bad lighting. *The standard room with a queen bed was about the size of a dorm room (if that's a good explanation). My room included the bed, television, chair, desk w/chair, one large mirror and a closet. *The heater did not work, but my girlfriend and I didn't need it on the 8th floor. When we turned on the AC to cool the room off a bit, it smelled terribly.*The bathroom was a pleasant surprise not great by any means, but good enough for the two of us. The furnishings appeared to be pretty new and it was clean enough. It included a hair dryer. *The staff was not helpful. Contrary to what their website reports, our room did not come with an iron/ironing board. I asked the front desk three times for one, and it was never delivered. So take from this review what you will. The Wellington is not great at all, but is affordable (for NYC) and is situated perfectly for tourists. If you are not planning on staying in your room a lot, the Wellington is great. Check out the suites. From the pictures on the website, they appear to be nicer than the standard rooms. Happy traveling!
Top Local Tips for New York City
Subway
Take the Subway, its a great, cheap way to get around. Buy an all day pass and you can go anywhere in the city.
Lombardi's Pizza ....Overrated!
Was really disappointed withLombardi's Pizza. After reading reviews that it was the best pizza in NYC and walking for miles to find it ... very average. It was *nice*, not was I expected. We were also given wrong bill .. a more expensive one .. mmmm. Shame.
New York Pass
I recommend the New York Pass! It gets you in to 40 attractions and gives you various discounts. After visiting 3 attractions we'd got our money worth. It also allows you to walk straight past the ques.
When we complained to the manager, he did change our room--but still charged us for the night because we did not complain until morning.
He said--well, the location is great.
I wish I could have pitched a tent. This is one of the most overrated hotels I have ever stayed in. NOt cheap and Not good.
