Fab location - indifferent staff

Avalon is in a brilliant location for both up and downtown NY and transport links. Empire State round the corner and Penn Station five minutes walk away.

It is clean and in good decorative order. The room we stayed in was large - had space for a sofa and chair with a table. Was a basic rate room. Was expensive at £118 per night but cheap NY hotel are hard to come by and it was Thanks Giving weekend.

Good size hotel - not so big that you have to queue for ages to speak to a member of staff at reception but staff dripping with NY 'couldn't care less' attitude which gets a bit waring.

Bathroom was the best NY we have seen in a hotel - large bath, separate walk in shower, great lighting, great illuminated shaving mirror and ample supply of good quality toiletries.

Breakfast was provided but here's the downside. If you get downstairs by 8.00am - fine, you get a seat. Any time after that and you have to queue. Breakfast is basic. No cooked food available - all toast (make yourself), fruits, muffins, cans orange juice. Hotel frequently ran out of supplies such as bread, muffins, orange juice, various jams. For £118 we expected better than this.

My wife and I spent a week in New York in September and we spent 3 nights in the Avalon followed by 3 nights in the Hilton on the Avenue of the Americas. While the facilities at the Hilton were good, the Avalon, in our opinion, had much more character and made it feel that we were staying in a real New York hotel with real New York character and not just another business-class clone hotel that could be in any city in the world. The location of the Avalon is superb, with fantastic views of the Empire State Building at night, if your room faces it. This, coupled with good access to the subway, Times Square, etc, makes it an ideal location to explore Manhattan from. The rooms themselves were spacious, modern, quiet and well maintained. Staff were friendly and unobtrusive, and the included breakfast set you up for the day. There is a wealth of good restaurants in the vicinity and the Minado Japanese sushi buffet is next door and is a particular favourite of ours. We are returning to New York this coming September and have booked a full week at the Avalon - it will feel like coming home.

We liked a lot this cosy hotel, we had a view of the Empire State Building from our room, and the location is very good, the staff made a good impression on us. The room was our favourite since it was comfortable and had all the commodities we needed, (internet, TV, whirlpool, separate shower ,etc)
Excellent room at reasonable price

We found the room at the Avalon hotel to be a larger than average size and the bathroom was superb. Our room had a view to the Empire State Building also. The staff was very good too. Would stay there again.

Excellent Place to Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family stayed here in June of 2003 for 7 days and we had an excellent time. The hotel is very classy and our room was beautiful.
The rooms are very clean and look new and the bathrooms are in marble and very clean. It was very convienent to the sites of New York City.
The check in desk people were very helpful and nice. The only downside to this hotel was the internet and data port connections did not work at all even though they boast of having this service. The hotel said they had people working on it but after 7 days it still did not work.
There are so many places to eat around here this hotel that you do not have to go far to eat and they are relatively inexpensive. The breakfast was awesome with a variety of food ranging from real yoguart not dannon, fresh fruits, fresh crossiants, cerals, pasties, etc. All in all I would definely stay here again. It more than meet my expectations.

What a mess!

The hotel itself was absolutely beautiful - I wish I could say that about the front desk staff's attitudes, though. When we got there, we were insulted by the front desk staff who made comments such as "you must not travel very often" and even later on that evening called one in our party a "bitch" repeatedly. The rest of the staff was outstanding, though, going out of their way to hail cabs, open doors, bring up ice, etc. When we went to check out, though, we also came into another BIG surprise. The room rate that we were given at reservation time was not the rate that we were being billed. We produced our confirmation email for the reservation and the hotel refused to make any adjustments! After reading the reviews on this website about problems similar to this, we sent prepayment of the hotel a month in advance -- after being quoted the amount to send in by the reservationist -- and at check out, there was an outstanding balance that was almost the amount of an additional night!

Long story short, the hotel itself is nice, but the staff's attitudes are enough to keep us away. There are far too many other hotels that want our business that don't call their patron's "bitches" and refuse to honor their own rates.

Large Rooms ....just barely adequate service

from JR8999
Our family stayed here over the Thanksgiving weekend. Upon arrival we had to search inside for someone to take our bags and to have our car parked. The room was a roomy suite for a reasonable price in Manhatten.
The marble bath was spacious but would have worked better for us with a vanity area outside.

All in all the hotel was OK. Don't think I would stay here again given all the other choices in the city.

What a great hotel!!

I just got back from spending 4 nights in NY, and this hotel was truly great! I was a bit worried after reading the reviews on this website, so I called the day before to confirm that they had my reservation.
When we arrived, we had a very warm welcome. They took our bags out of the cab, and were very friendly. The lady at the front desk, Carmen was super friendly, and gave us a lot of great tips when we arrived. Also, Jay and Scott were very nice, and helped us out alot with "getting around". There were a few times when I asked for information, and some gave me a quick, incorrect answer, so I noticed they didn't go above and beyond, but that was the ONLY negative thing. Other than that, it was truly awesome. Tip: There's this really great all you can eat sushi and japanese buffet literally 2 doors down from the hotel, as well as a GREAT little Bagel deli (that Jay recommended) on the corner of 32nd and 5th. Their complimentary continental breakfast was also really good and fresh. All in all, my first time in NY was made great by the nice people and comfortable stay. When I return to NY, I will DEFINITELY be staying there.

keeping hot at the avalon

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a charming hotel which is decorated and maintained to a high standard. The complimentary breakfast is great on those frezing mornings so you dont have to venture to far until the weather warms up a little, You coudnt really fault the Avalon for its standard and location however the rooms are kept very hot too hot at times and there seemed no way to alter this you either had it on and was very hot or you asked reception to turn it off completly, at times the reception staff seem a little unfriendly and realy dont offer any help or guidance as this was our first visit to N.Y. After being there a few days we got used to the manner of the place and there ways and everything was fine. I would stay there again as hotel clean.comfortable and a good location just wish reception staff a little more welcoming.............

Beware if booked online!!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Back in June, we booked a Junior Suite for November for 4 days at the Avalon Hotel. We did this through an online reservation company which the Avalon used and was under contract with. They immediately charged our credit card for the entire amount which would guarantee our reservation. The total was aroud $800.00. Upon arrival, the Avalon handed us a paper with a phone number on it and said they discontinued doing business with the reservation company two weeks earlier and were not honoring our reservation. Thus putting us on the street without a reservation. The phone number was to the reservation company which went to a voice mail which was no help. The Avalon then tells us that they have already given our room away and could not take have us as a guest.
Luckily I printed off and brought with me a copy of my receipt with a working number of the reservation company which we called and they were able to find us a comparable room nearby and we did not have to pay any additional fees. Moral of the the hotel before you leave to make sure you have a reservation even though it is guaranteed. Also, think twice about using the Avalon as they did not call us and tell us that two weeks earlier they cancelled our reservation. Poor service from the Avalon, the Online Reservation Company almost ruined our trip.
Worked out in the end but what a hassle.

Stayed in the Avalon Hotel for the past 4 nights. Absolutely fantastic location. Very Clean room. Will be booking for next stay, and would highly recommend both location and helpful staff.

t be better

from A TripAdvisor Member
stayed for 3 nights recently and could not have been happier. Great location, staff very friendly and helpful, room lovely, great bathroom.
Would definitely stay there again. Have stayed in other larger hotels and hate queuing for ages just to get to the desk. The Avalon definitely gets my vote every time!

Nice little gem, not quite a diamond!

Stayed here for three nights in November. Booked a junior suite (good internet rate with Opodo). On check-in, we were allocated a superior room (accidentally ??), but this was quickly changed to a suite when we pointed out the error. Room was large and clean, marble bathroom very large with bath and separate shower. Only criticisms were that the sitting area was very drafty (no nice views) and the heating/airconditioning noisy and had a mind of it's own ! Apart from that the hotel has a cosy little bar and provides good complimentary breakfast and also one free glass of champagne. It is ideally situated for Macy's, Empire State and Times Square, and the elevator arrives promptly unlike the Hilton ! Staff seemed friendly enough, We would definitely consider staying there again.

Beautiful, comfortable stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our room was beautiful, clean and comfortable. We didn't really think the hotel could be as nice as the pictures suggested, but it was even better. We had a huge, marble bathroom with separate tub and shower, plenty of room, and a refrigerator. It was clean. Our friends also had a great view of the Empire State building from their room, and an Internet connection. Staff was always pleasant and helpful. The free breakfast is a nice add-on. Subway is convenient to the hotel. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on my next visit.

Top Local Tips for New York City

woodbury common take a "bus" (which looks like a coach) from times square bus stop/garage to woodbury common, it isnt expensive and it takes you to an outlet place where shopping is even cheaper - you are picked up at hourly intervals - well worth it.

Subway Use the subway, it's fast, convenient and cheap. You can get virtually anywhere!

dont get ripped off when get to jfk make sure dont pay more than $45 plus tolls and tip to manhattan
