Messy, Smelly, disgusting

i stayed here with my school on a trip. there were roadworks outside. lobby looks okay but was swarming with local kids doing a campaign. got my room, opened the door and there was someone in the bed - they had double booked the room. took me two hours to get a new room. when i got it, was smelly and stingy. beds are weak and unstable. tv didnt work, fridge was broken and door made an annoying noise. ants in one of my friends room. staff cant be bothered with anything.
Be carefull with your credit card at this hotel

I stayed at the YMCA for 3 nights, everything was fine, the hotel was ok, not too bad neither good. The problem was when I returned home and got my credit card review. For my VERY surprise I found out that my credit card was used twice at the YMCA desk, one time with my autorization to pay the 3 nights and one more time that I didn't know wich was charged one extra night.
Just to make it clear, it was used and taken at the same day I checked in, so no reason for charge as late check out, I checked in at the correct date, so no reason to pay extra charge for late check in.
In my receipt it was the amount for 3 nights if I didn't pay attention when I come back home it would pass and I would had payed for something I didn't use.
I called and send email to YMCA, and my feedback was that they didn't know what I was talking about and that in their register I payed for 3 nights only.
I called my bank to check and it was not my bank mistake, my card had been drwan twice almost at the same time in the YMCA desk.
So be carefull if you are going there.
It was a very unpleasent experience, plus all the money that I had to spend, having my card hold and destroyed at my bank, paying charges to have a new card and etc... very very unpleasent situation

Bed Bugs, Mice, Nightmare

This hotel is the worst, dirty bed bugs, really unfriendly, unhelpful staff (like most of New York). Tiny rooms, dirty beds, broken windows... Did have a TV and fridge, but they should sell them and pay better cleaners and people to get rid of the bugs! Really not recommended to anyone, particularly those with children or older people (or anyone who doesn't like sleeping in dirty beds with bed bugs).
Filthy rooms with bedbugs and cockroaches

The staff are quite friendly and the location OK, but the rooms are tiny, poorly maintained, the beds are worn out and uncomfortable and several of our party found their rooms infested with cockroaches and bedbugs. Electrical and other fittings are requently broken, missing or appear dangerous. Unless they refurbished it, I wouldn't ever want to set foot in this place again.

We stayed for 3 nights and it was not fun!
Check-In: we had booked through the Internet and paid the deposit per credit card. At the check-In desk, the same credit card (mine) didn't work! My boyfriend tried with his credit card: it didn't work! The two women had no explanation for this and were not helpful. And how slow they both were! It took an hour to check-in, and we had to go to the bank and get cash to pay.
Rooms: shoe-box size, very basic with nothing but bunk beds, a cupboard and a TV, that switches itself on during the night! It was not possible to open the window and the ac was too cold ot too hot. AND there were hairs in the bed sheets. Thanks God we had sleeping bags!
The bathrooms were clean, but oldfashioned and always busy, so I could'nt really find a time where I could be alone in.
Worse: the restaurant is closed! It was the best thing of the YMCA with tasty and affordable meals.
We will never stay there again!

checking-in- the lady was sweet but soo slow and couldn't find my reservation. I booked through expedia which I've done before and had no problems, so somewhere the reservations were lost- therefore call the hotel directly to confirm before going.
1. location- great, in the middle of everything, 5-10min walk to subway
2. safety- the area seemed verry safe and the security guy checks your room card to make sure you're a guest before going up anyways

Safe/Clean/Good Location

Stayed at Vanderbilt YMCA twice last year (2 English girls in 20s).
Location is very local for tourists (I prefer to stay on the east side) - Good for Times Square, Rockafella, UN Building, Grand Central. Safe neighbourhood, felt very safe walking around.
24hr security on the door - so nice, even offered to walk me to the deli on the next block to get a cup of tea at 4am (But I declined 'cos I was in my PJs and Slippers!)
Easy check in, rooms are basic but are clean and have a TV. Bathrooms are also clean but could use some up-dating. Other guests ranged from all ages.
When I come to NYC with my boyfriend we don't stay here because, I feel the rooms with double beds are a bit pricey for what you get. (This is why I only gave 4 stars). For couples I'd reccommend East Side Bed and Coffee for a real East Side New York feel and home-like surroundings!

i have now stayed at the Y both times i have been in NYC.... and it really is the best place i have found. being a YMCA, i thought at first (somewhat naively) that the place would be full of down-and-outs.... how severly wrong i was.
as a 20 year-old girl, i found the place safe- which is very important when you're in The Big Apple! the security guards and receptionists are lovely, very friendly and accomodating.
the rooms yes, are a little on the small size, but when you're in new york, why oh why do you want to be stuck inside when outside has so much to offer? in that respect, the rooms are just fine- i've found them clean (both times), and comfortable. the bathrooms are an experience if you're not used to sharing them, but the larger shower room does lock so you CAN have a private shower without sharing with a stranger!
don't go here expecting the ritz, but for the prices and service, this place is the best. the pool and gym etc downstairs are lovely- and the 'all-american' diner serves breakfast 24-7....what more can you ask for?! the Y is situated perfectly... right in the middle of the city, but far enough away from the hub-bub to be quiet (well, as quiet as is possible).

We stayed at the vanderbilt for 6 nights and we had a great time! The hotel is very central located in Manhatten, we walked to times square and the metro. The rooms are small but clean and safe. THe staff was very friendly. Secuirity is great, nobody gets upstairs without showing their hotelkey. The swimmingpool is a great extra (don't forget to bring your swimming cap), with good showers and lockers. It is cheap, clean, friendly and central...what else do you wish for?

I stayed at the Y the week before Christmas in December 04. My friend and I shared a private room with bunckbeds. the room had a chair and TV, with cable, and that was it. Very simple but very clean. Very small too, like probably 6 feet wide and 12 feet across. I'm not even lying it was so small. But it was clean and quiet and very close to everything. I had read the previous reviews on this website but I found noone rude, nor any bedbugs. The showers and bathrooms were on the same floor and very clean. The hotel was literally a short walk to Times Square and the shubway. Also since it was in the middle of winter while I was there the heat was great. They also have an air conditioner window unit in every room so you can make the room whatever temp you like. And you could work out for free at their gym which was pretty nice too. For the price and the location I would rate this hostel very high. I experienced nothing but a good time. I would gladely recomend this place to anyone.
Nightmare on 47th St!

As first time travellers to New York (27th Aug - 1st Sept 2004) we had no clue as to where we should stay. On the internet, the Vanderbilt looked decent - i.e. clean, cheap, good location and ideal for our 6 days in the city. We booked over the internet (twin room, no smoking) via an intermediary website and when we arrived we were told that a single room for a single night was reserved. We lost the deposit we had already paid and the rates were also higher. So...BEWARE!!! Book your hotel direct if poss!!!
The staff were not very helpful and checking-in took over an hour, and our nightmare was sorted temporarily. The following day we were required to pack, return to the check-in desk and make new reservations, this also took over 1hour.
For the first night our room was very small and although there was a window, the view was reminiscent of looking up a chimney complete with soot black dirt (daylight only at the very top). The next day, the new room we eventually were assigned to stank of cigarettes, our luggage got in the room at a squeeze - literally, and the room was opposite the lifts so lots of noise with people and lift sounds (ding, ding). I hardly slept, especially when I saw a cock-roach - I slept with a bed sheet over me!
The bathroom is another story! There were flies in the shower cubicle, a shared bathroom is literally a shared bathroom without privacy.
When we were there though, renovations seemed to be taking place and the intake of students who live at the Y whilst studying in the city had reasonable rooms with modern furniture and new paint on the walls!!! Whether this look has been adapted thoughout I am not sure but there is no way I'm going back to that place and paying for the experience. Grand Central Station puts this place to shame - I'd stay there and have a more pleasant experience without fear of grease and grime. Basic but brilliant!

Stayed at the Vanderbilt for 5 nights last week - it's basic, we had a private twin bedded (bunk beds) room on the 9th floor. There were 2 loos and 3 showers (with flies....) on the floor but the best bit about the Y (apart from the location), is the facilities within the gym/swimming pool in the basement. Pack a wash bag in the morning and head downstairs for a shower instead of bothering with the dilapidated shared facilities on your floor. They give you towels and there are brilliant mirrors and hairdryers for you to use. It's also absolutely spotless!
The Y is centrally located - we walked everywhere. And for 2 twenty-something girls it's perfect - the girls on reception are lovely and there are security guards who check your key cards before letting you up to your room. I'd definitely stay here again - it is basic and the rooms are very small, but it's cheap (make sure you book early) and apart from the time we were asleep, we only spent 3 hours in total in the room itself.

I stayed at the Y for 12 nights this october. I caught a shuttle bus straight there from the airport very easily and cheaply and was greeted at the front desk by friendly and helpful staff (everytime I spoke with staff whether it be front desk, secrurity, cafe, or housekeeping always very friendly) rooms are small but clean and do there job. I feel it's very secure and the facilities whether it be bathrooms or laundry were always well maintained, functioning and easly accessable. TV's in rooms work and have many channels (coming from australia it's alot) Very close to food/shopping/transport and most importantly to me 5 blocks or so from time square and broadway. I walked everywhere never caught a cab always walking up to see shows on broadway and walked back safely alone each night. Can't comment on the pool and gym facilities never had time to check them out too busy out and about in the glorious big apple. I would definatly recommend this place and WILL stay there again, just note I a 23 year old australian and expense on accommodation was a big deal to me if you want a fancy hotel this may not be your best option but if you want a cheap roof over your head and a clean secure place with a clean towel daily this is your best bet.

I visited in April 2001 to this hotel (I have since returned and stayed elsewhere). I was terrified while staying here as we had bunk beds that were glued together! I slept with one eye open just incase it decided to give and fall on me. Not only that but the beds were on coasters and all you had to do was sneeze or cough and you'd roll across the room. Room was shoebox sized with barely enough room for the bunk beds, chest of drawers with a tv on top and no closet space. Toilets as mentioned by other reviews were shared - brought back some school memories. The location is ok, not the best but in New York you've never going to be right next to everything. Gym and Lesuire facilities were brilliant. Basketball courts, running tracks, swimming pools, bikes, rowing machines, bikes with internet (but dont stop pedalling or you have to start all over again!). Theres a great little deli about 10 mins away. Gugenheim museum was a experience - dead fish were in the tanks. one was even bones. Musuem of Modern Art (MOMA) was well worth it to see well known masterpieces up close, you're allowed to take pictures but not with the flash. Broadway - even though i'm not a musical person - was well worth it aswell, we saw the production of Rent and i would recommend any of the others if Rent was anything to go by. Empire State and statue of liberty - must see's when in Big Apple. If you love good deals then head over to China Town for all your bits and pieces but if you like spending AND fashion head for Macy's or Bloomies. It may be worth while going on a day tour. Our tour guide showed us everything, John Lennons Strawberry Field - where Yuko stays across the street from. Where Home Alone 2 was shot. All the other stars houses (Marylin Munroe/Cher/Madonna etc) - everything you need to know basically.
Top Local Tips for New York City
broadway..... Try a broadway show one night probably complete your experience, we didnt get the chace to go because of No tickets and they were too much money for us youngsters! Although have a night out wine and dine in hard rock cafe, great food and good service.... located in Times Square. Taxis are very cheap to get about $4 or more or may less depends!

Cheap Broadway tickets Bought my tickets online in advance at http://www.broadwaybox.com/ and it worked perfectly. You can buy and print tickets at home in advance so you don't have to spend time when on location, plus you can get some nice discounts. We saved about 50% on our tickets.
