By far the worst hotel ever stayed in

I had the misfortune of staying in the New Yorker last weekend for 2 nights while passing through New York after visiting friends in Kentucky. I paid 520 US dollars for 2 nights room only for myself and my wife.[ I paid 800 dollars for 8 nights in the Hilton at Cinncinati Airport and would recommend it to anyone] Firstly the room was a discrace. very dirty, very small, smelt damp wall paper looked damp, bed felt damp would not have let my dogs sleep in that room. The carpets in the room and in all th corridors were very dirty and also looked damp. The toilet in our room was the smallest I have ever seen. Our stay was a very bad end to an otherwise great Holiday. To top it all I got bitten all over my legs whilst sleeping and was scratching for my intire stay. The New Yorker is a total rip off in the Capital of the rip of cities.

The hotel is 75 years old and smells like it has never replaced it's carpets in all those years...but the 30s vintage bathrooms are a treat! Good location so go after it has been renovated

Just got back from my stay at the New Yorker. I will summarize my thoughts in the following bullet points for easy reading: Good Points: > Hotel is in a superb location. Walking distance from most major sites > View from breakfast room is fantastic (floor 39 overlooks financial district & Empire State Building). Breakfast is all-you-can eat and is very nice with friendly service > Food in the hotel restaurant (not the 24hr Tik Tok Diner) is excellent, with friendly service. Recommend the Fillet Mignon! Bad Points: > Hotel is majorly under-equipped for its size. Constant queues at reception / guests waiting around make the whole entrance lobby look like a shambles > The rooms/corridors are in MAJOR need of refurbishment. Wallpaper patches, stained/damaged decor, badly stained carpets all look bad. Apparently refurbishment is underway but I saw no sign of this, and no finish date is apparent. > Hotel sells itself on views. Due to the bizarre shape of the building many of the views look directly across at other rooms, so no have view at all. Be wary of this. > Poorly fitted air conditioning units (rammed in the open window space and taped up) mean ZERO NOISE INSULATION! If you need a quiet place to sleep, then look elsewhere or buy some good ear plugs. > Space under each door means you can hear the corridor action perfectly too - another sound problem > Hotel lobby can only change $100 in travellers cheques (per room) each day (use Macy's to change an unlimited amount with 1% charge) > Suites are basically 2 rooms knocked into 1, so have a bathroom at each side. Good for couples but our bathroom would have had that view we desperately wanted if it had a west-facing window!) > Dig around in the room and you will find lots of dirt. I had rubbish underneath my bathroom sink that had been there for weeks. Cupboard shelves etc also very dusty. Overall this is an okay hotel, but there are many issues that need resolving. The hotel has the potential to be one of the best in the city, but as you can see there are too many things letting it down. A good location for those requiring a simple base to sleep.
